We are one quarter of the way through the regular season of high school football in the state of Georgia. We believe our GHSA Football Rankings are getting dialed in, but are almost certain there will be more surprises as the season moves along.

There were no real surprises in Class 6A this week. North Gwinnett had a big Top-10 win as they outlasted Mill Creek. The loss drops Mill Creek one spot to No. 7 while Douglas County moves up one spot after a big win over Class 5A Langston Hughes. In Class 5A, the big news of the night was Class A Toombs County going on the road to Rome and defeating the previously ranked No. 9 Rome Wolves. The win by Toombs dropped Rome from the rankings. That made room for Brunswick, who makes their debut at No. 9 this week.

In Class 4A, half of the teams were on bye this week. Cartersville beat Calhoun handily to maintain the No. 1 spot, while Kell holds steady at No. 10 after a win over Class 6A Wheeler. Ware County lost an overtime battle to Bartram Tail out of St. Augustine, FL while Cass lost a game to North Cobb. Down in Class 3A, Whitewater had the big win of the week, as they downed Troup by 18. The win catapults Whitewater into the rankings at No. 9 while Troup drops from the Top-10. Over in Class 2A, there wasn’t much movement in the rankings, Stephens County drops one spot to No. 3 after falling to Class 3A Jefferson. Prince Avenue moves up to No. 2. Otherwise, those rankings remain unchanged.

We already mentioned the stunner of the weekend, as Toombs County, (Class A-Division I No. 1) upended Rome. Thomasville dropped a spot after a loss to their Rose City rival Thomas County Central. Otherwise, the rankings remained unchanged. Finally, down in Class A Division II, with four teams on bye, the big news was Mt Zion’s loss to Chattooga. That loss drops Bulldogs from No. 3 to No. 8 this week.
