GHSA Football Rankings – Week 3

We are already a third of the way through the regular season and we there is still a lot we don’t know about how region play will shake out. While many teams will begin region play, this week, we are getting a sense of who the contenders might by this season. This is our GHSA Football Ranking for each classification in the state of Georgia.

North Gwinnett was the big mover and shaker in Class 6-A as they beat Colquitt County on Friday night. Their win propels them up to No. 3 from No. 7. The loss drops Colquitt down to No. 10 this week. Camden County makes their debut into the rankings this week. They replace Walton, who drops out after a loss to Roswell. In Class 5-A, Rome drops 4 spots to No. 9 this week after their loss to Carrollton. Woodward drops from the poll after a loss last week. That made way for Sequoyah to enter the poll after they defeated Kell on Friday night.

Over in Class 4-A, Cartersville retains the top spot, while Blessed Trinity is up one spot to No. 2. Perry drops to No. 5 after a loss to Houston County. Benedictine got a big win, their first of the season, and are up three spots to No. 7 this week. Meanwhile, Class 3-A, Sandy Creek retains the top spot. Cherokee Bluff makes their debut into the rankings this week at No. 9.

Class 2-A saw the most losses of the Top-10 teams this week, but those were against opponents from higher classification, so while there was movement in the poll,, only one team dropped out, making room for Lovett, who moved to 3-0 with a win over Spencer. In Class A-Division I, it was Elbert County scoring a big win over Wesleyan. The win dropped the Wolves from the rankings, while Elbert is in at No. 9 this week. Lamar County also makes their debut in the rankings at No. 10 this week. Finally, in Class A-Division II, Brooks County got a big win over Cook. That moves them into the 10 spot this week.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 2

We are now two weeks into the Georgia High School Football season and we are still learning a lot about who the cream of the crop is in 2024. The Milton Eagles got a big win in an interstate battle with American Heritage of Florida. The Eagles victory gives them further credence to their top ranking in Class 5A, and quite possibly as the best team in the state of Georgia.

Before we round out the rest of Class 5A, let’s take a look at Class 6A, our top 8 are unchanged, as Carrolton retains the No. 1 spot. Walton and Collins Hill make their debut this week at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively. Back to Class 5A, we mentioned the Milton Eagles, as they sit at No. 1 again this week. All of the other team’s in the ranking held serve with the exception of Woodward Academy, who suffered a 7-point defeat at the hands of Class 6A Collins Hill. That loss drops Woodward to No. 10 while Roswell moves up one spot to No 9.

Class 4A remained unchanged with the exception of Creekside dropping two spots to No. 5. Cartersville still sits atop of Class 4A. Class 3A saw a little bit of change. Unranked Class 4A Harris County upset Troup County by 4. That loss drops Troup 5 spots down to No. 7 this week. Meanwhile Mary Persons is in the rankings for the first time this week at No. 10. Pierce County leapfrogs Prince Avenue Christian to take the No. 1 spot in the Class 2A poll this week. All of the other teams remained unchanged.

Class A D-1 saw an upset as Fannie County handled Rabun County 28-7. The win by Fannie catapults the Rebels into the No. 7 spot while Rabun, who was No. 1 last week, falls to No. #10 this week. Toombs County is our new No. 1 in Class A D-1, while. Bremen rounds out the poll at No. 10. Finally, in Class A D-2, Irwin County retains the top spot, while Seminole County makes their rankings debut this week at No. 10.

GHSA Football Rankings Week-1

The high school football season kicked off in earnest this past weekend. While Mother Nature did here best to put a damper on games Friday night, many teams waited out the rain to finish games while others concluded their Week-1 on Saturday. This is our Week- GHSA All Classification Rankings.

Some notable results around the state in particular was Milton holding off Buford by 3. The Eagles who won Class 7-A last year, now find themselves in Class 5-A this season and got off to a great start with a win over the Wolves. Buford is still a good bet to compete for the Class 6-A title this season. Meanwhile Douglas County got off to a hot start with a 42-7 win over Cedar Grove as they move up to the top classification this season. North Gwinnett looked like the are ready to compete for a region title as they downed McEachern 39-17

In Class 5A, Hughes, Gainesville, Thomas County Central, and Coffee all recorded big wins in a very top heavy classification. Meanwhile in 4A, Cartersville and Blessed Trinity recorded shutout victories while Perry, Ware and Cass all won big.

Down in Class 3A, two teams expected to make runs in the state tournament took unexpected tumbles on Friday as Calhoun fell to Class 5A Creekview while Cedar Grove fell to Class 6A Douglasville. Sandy Creek was able to score a big win over Class 6A East Coweta. Class 2A saw Prince Avenue Christian take down Class 6A West Forsyth. We expect the Wolverines to hang around the top of these rankings all regular season.

Class A-Division I saw most of the favorites prevail. Dublin got a big win over rival Swainsboro to open up the season, while Thomasville got a big win over their rival, Brooks County. As we continue the rivalry theme in Class A Division II, it was Irwin County scoring a win over Fitzgerald, while Trion beat Gordon-Lee in the oldest rivalry in the state. Greene County also impressed with a win over Putnam County.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 12 – Part II

The end of the Georgia High School Football regular season is upon us and there are several region races that have yet to be determined. This is Part II of our weekly feature where we take a look of eight of the more intriguing matchup around the state. Each one of these games will have an impact on playoff seedings or region titles.

First up the Portal Panthers host the Jenkins County Eagles. Both teams have found success this season and for Portal, a win would be the first in school history. Can Elijah Coleman lead the Panthers to an upset or will Jenkins County soar to their first region win since 1960? Next up, the Rockmart Yellow Jackets face the North Murray Mountaineers. North Murray puts up a lot of numbers on offense, can Rockmart keep pace or will their defense be the key to another region win?

Up in Trion, the Trion Bulldogs will host the Darlington Tigers. The Tigers spoiled Trion’s last bid at an undefeated regular season bid back in 1997. Can Trion get over the hump and win their first region title since 2003? Finally, down in Waycross, the Ware County Gators host the Coffee Trojans. This is a clash of Titans in Class 5A. Ware County will have their hands full with Coffee running back Fred Brown. Can quarterback Luke Hooks guide the Gators to another region title?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Portal Panthers have a chance to claim their first region title in school history with a win on Friday night. The Panthers enter this Friday’s game winners of their last three games, all in region play. Their defense has shutout four opponents this season and is allowing 14.5 points per game. The Panthers have a relatively balanced attack, averaging 145.4 yards per game through the air and 171.4 yards per game on the ground. Elijah Coleman has thrown for over 1,000 yards on the year and also leads the team in rushing with 813 yards and 12 rushing TDs. Amir Jackson (28 receptions, 506 yards, 8-TDs), Charles McNeal (20 receptions, 349 yards, 4-TDs) and Samari McBride (19 receptions, 163 yards, 1-TD) lead the team in receiving. Portal’s offense is averaging 32 points per game.

The Jenkins County Eagles are off to their best start in school history and are looking to cap off their first undefeated regular season with a win on Friday night. A win would also give them their first region title since 1960. The Eagles have relied on the ground game this season and Robtravious Coney has delivered  with over a thousand yards rushing this season. Coney is not the only option for the Eagles as Christian Wilson, Z.Z. Wilson and Tyrone Martin have all given the Eagles a lift on the ground. Jenkins is averaging 41.6 points per game while the defense is allowing 12.5 points per game.

This is a big game for both of these teams as they try to set a new standard for their respective programs. They key is simple for Portal, get Coleman going and slowdown the powerful Jenkins County ground game. We said simple…not easy. The Eagles have too much on the ground, even on the road. Jenkins County by 7.

The Skinny

The Rockmart Yellow Jackets are in search of their seventh straight region title. They enter this week winners of their last six games. Rockmart is averaging 350 yards of total offense this season. Calliyon Thompson has thrown for 1,167 yards and 13-TDs and is completing 70% of his passes. J.D. Davis has been the running quarterback and is second on the team in rushing with 420 yards and 6-TDs. Senior Brent Washington continues to lead the Jackets with 556 rushing yards and 9-TDs. Tristan Anderson and Jake Bailey are the top receivers for Rockmart. They have combined to catch 65 passes for 1,204 yards and 12-TDs. Rockmart’s offense is averaging 35.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 12.6

The North Murray Mountaineers are winners of their last five games. They are in search of their first region title since 2019. The Mountaineers have been able to move the football week in and week out as they are averaging over 459 yards of offense per game. Quarterback Skyler Williams has been outstanding this season. He’s thrown for 2,072 yards, rushed for 1,017 yard and accounted for 33 TDs. Judson Petty has rushed for 442 yards and also leads the team in receiving with 1,094 yards and tallied 18-TDs. Hudson Hulett has also caught 43 passes for 762 yards and 5-TDs. North Murray is averaging 37.7 points per game and allowing 24 points per game.

Rockmart will have their hands full trying to slow down North Murray’s dual threat quarterback. If they can slow him down we like their chances. That’s easier said than done. However, we like the Jackets at home. Rockmart by 8.

The Skinny

The Trion Bulldogs are looking to cap off their first undefeated regular season since 1974. The Bulldogs have been impressive this season, defeating opponents by a margin of 33 points per game. Their closest game this season was a 7-point victory over Dade County. Trion’s defense is allowing 10.7 points per game. Running back Toby Maddox leads the way for the Bulldogs as he’s rushed for 1,385 yards on the season. The Bulldogs aren’t just a one-trick pony, as quarterback Kade Smith has shown nice touch with his passes and an ability to pull the ball down and scramble when he needs to. Ethan Willingham has proven to be a reliable receiving target for Smith.

The Darlington Tigers have won four out of their last five games and are in search of their 3rd consecutive region title.  The Tigers were off last week. While Darlington might not be as dominant this year as they have in the last two seasons, they still have plenty of talented playmakers, including quarterback Luke Parker, receiver Talan Shirley and a couple of really good running backs in D’Marion Floyd and Myles Twyman. Darlington’s offense is averaging 32.3 points per game while the defense is allowing 17.2.

Darlington spoiled Trion’s last bid at an undefeated season back in 1997. If they are going to play spoiler again they will need to slow down the explosive Maddux. We wouldn’t count out  the Tigers’ backs either as they are just as explosive. We expect this game to be as close as it gets, but like the hometown Tigers to find a way. Trion by 3.

The Skinny

The Ware County Gators have won their last four games entering this week’s region title matchup. During the 4-game win streak, the Gators are averaging  55.5 points per game. On the entire season, Ware is averaging 40.3 points per game. The Gators are averaging 316 yards of total offense this season and are led by quarterback Luke Hooks, who has thrown for 1,515 yards and 19-TDs. Quintin Orange Jr. has been Hooks’ top receiver this season with 33 receptions for 589 yards and 6-TDs. Dea’Jeaun Dennis and R.J. Boyd have combined to rush for 1,045 yards and 17-TDs. The Gators’ defense is allowing 16.6 points per game this season and has recorded two shutouts.

The Coffee Trojans have been impressive all season long as they have won their games by an average margin of 34.5 points. No one has really challenged Coffee in region play and they have only surrendered 49 points the entire season. The Trojans are averaging 393 yards of total offense this season, with most of that coming on the ground as they average 266 rushing yards per game. Fred Brown leads the team with 1,434 yards and 19-TDs, while Tyrese Hansley has chipped in 452 yards and 4-TDs. Coffee’s defense is allowing a paltry 5.4 points per game this season. Jyarius Carter leads the team with 48 total tackles while Elgie Paulk has recorded 7 sacks.

The numbers for both of these teams are impressive. It seems to reason that if Coffee can got Fred Brown going, the will have plenty of success on the road. Meanwhile it will be incumbent on Ware to get the 1-2 combination of Dennis and Boyd going to help pace their offense. The Gators have home field advantage, but we expect this game to be nip and tuck. We like the visiting Trojans, on the strength of their defense, by 2.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 12 – Part I

The end of the Georgia High School Football regular season is upon us and there are several region races that have yet to be determined. This is Part I of our weekly feature where we take a look of eight of the more intriguing matchup around the state. Each one of these games will have an impact on playoff seedings or region titles.

First up, the Eastside Eagles host the Jefferson Dragons. Eastside is in search of their first region title since 2018. However, running back and linebacker Sammy Brown stand firmly in their way. Brown and the Dragons are in search of their third consecutive region title. Can Eastside tame the Dragons this week or will Brown run wild again? Down in Troup County, the LaGrange Grangers will face off against the Troup Tigers. Troup lost a key piece of their offense, but has found a way to get things going on the ground. Can LaGrange’s air attack be the perfect counter to top Troup?

Over in Suwanee, the North Gwinnett Bulldogs will host the Norcross Blue Devils. North Gwinnett is looking to force a three way tie in region play while Norcross is in search of their first region title since 2020. Finally, the Parkview Panthers will face the Grayson Rams in a game that will give one team a home playoff game and potentially a share of the region title. Parkview has had to overcome a few injuries this season at running back. Meanwhile Grayson is looking for their second straight region title.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

Special thanks to the Georgia Helmet Project for providing each team’s helmet. You can find all of their work here: http://gahelmetproject.com

The Skinny

The Eastside Eagles enter Thursday’s contest winners of their last 5 games. The last four they have won by a convincing margin. The Eagles have done most of their damage on the ground as they are averaging right around 200 yards per game rushing while they are passing for just under 100 yards per game. Eastside’s offense is led by running backs Anquez Cobb and Jayden Barr. The duo has combined to rush for 1,202 yards and 22 TDs on the year. Sophomore quarterback Payton Shaw has three reliable receivers in the aforementioned Barr, Marion Eubanks and Chase Jordan. Eastside is averaging 33 points per game on offense while the defense is allowing just over 16 per game.

The Jefferson Dragons are working on their second undefeated regular season since 2020. The Dragons have had relatively little issue defeating anyone on their schedule as their average margin of victory this season has been just over 29 points per game. Sammy Brown leads the Dragons offense and defense as he’s rushed for 1,269 yards and 21-TDs and also leads the team in total tackles. Quarterback Gavin Markey doesn’t throw it a ton, but when he does, Joshua Causey and Zay Minish have been a couple of his top targets. We mentioned the explosive Dragons’ offense earlier, they are averaging 39.4 points per game while the defense is allowing just 10 and have recorded three shutouts on the year.

A win for the Dragons will make their 4th region title in five years, while the Eagles would notch their first region title since 2018 with a win on Thursday. We expect for Eastside to hang with Jefferson at home, but don’t know if they can stop Sammy Brown and the Dragons’ ground game. Jefferson by 6.

The Skinny

The LaGrange Grangers have played themselves into position to host a playoff game for the second consecutive season. LaGrange has won their last six games and have only allowed 33 total points in those contests. One of the key cogs for the LaGrange defense is linebacker Parker Shattuck. Shattuck also doubles as a TE/H for the offense and is one of the reliable receivers for quarterback Malik Kemp. Kemp has a strong arm and has also flashed his pocket presence as he knows how to buy time for his receivers to find holes in the secondary. LaGrange’s offense is averaging 37 points per game this season and have scored 35 points or more in all of their victories this season.

The Troup Tigers are winners of their last four games and like LaGrange, have played themselves into position to host a playoff game this season. The Tigers have done most of their damage on the ground this season, averaging almost 250 rushing yards per game. The Tigers have gained over 2,200 rushing yards as a team and it has been running back by committee. Troup had to pivot after losing starting quarterback Taeo Todd to a season ending injury earlier in the season. Ashton Williams and quarterback Logan Sinkfield have responded as they have combined to rush for 1,214 yards and 21-TDs. While the Tigers have been run oriented, Noah Dixon has shown playmaking ability at receiver with 397 yards and 7-TDs. Defensively, Qua Birdsong leads the Tigers in total tackles. Troup is allowing 9.8 points per game.

The sets up to be an interesting game as the Troup County rivals square off for the 36th time. For either team to claim a region title, they will need to win on Friday and then get some help from Whitewater to defeat Starr’s Mill. But perhaps most importantly, a win will ensure a home playoff game. Troup will need to find a way to limit LaGrange’s back plays while LaGrange will have to slow down Troup’s ground attack. We expect this game to go down to the wire and like the Grangers by 6.

The Skinny

The North Gwinnett Bulldogs have won four of their last five games entering this week. The Bulldogs can force a three way tie for first place with a win this week and if Peachtree Ridge wins. They can also win the region with a win and a Peachtree Ridge loss. The Bulldogs are averaging 37.7 points per game and have been balanced in their offensive production, averaging 182.8 yards per game through the air and 164.9 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Ryan Hall has thrown for 1,517 yards and 17-TDs and has also rushed for 581 yards snd 7-TDs. Running back Julian Walters has gained 627 yards and 12-TDs to lead the Bulldogs ground game. North Gwinnett’s defense is allowing 22 points per game, and they really get after the quarterback. They have recorded 40 sacks this season with Cole Funderburk (11 sacks) and Jaden Brock (10) leading the way.

The Norcross Blue Devils have won seven straight games and are looking to claim their second region title in four years with a win on Friday. Norcross is averaging 36 points per game this season. They are led by quarterback A.J. Watkins who has thrown for 656 yards, rushed for 750 yards and caught 2o passes for 233 yards and has tallied 18 total TDs. Junior Dillon Mohammed has also seen time at quarterback and has thrown for 631 yards and 6-TDs. Kevin Maven-Winchester has been the workhorse for Norcross’ ground game, as he’s carried the ball 115 times for 749 yards and 7-TDs. Jamari Harold and Joshua Clarke have combined to catch 44 passes for 575 yards and 2-TDs.

Norcross seems to have all of the momentum entering this game, but we expect the road game to play a factor. Norcross’ defense has been dominant as of late. They will need a big performance to slow down North Gwinnett’s Hill. As with the other games, we’ve previewed this week, we expect this game to come down to the final quarter. We like Norcross to just get by North Gwinnett. Blue Devils by 4.

The Skinny

The Parkview Panthers have won three out of their last four games and have a chance to host a playoff game with a win on Friday night. The Panthers have gone with a balanced attack on offense, averaging 163.8 yards per game through the air and 176.4 yards per game on the ground. The Panthers have lost two starting running backs to season ending injuries, but it has been next man up for Parkview. Davin Rouse, Brian Stokes, Jr. and quarterback Jaiden Jenkins have combined to rush for 974 yards and 11-TDs. Meanwhile, Michael Matthews and Carson Wilson have combined to catch 56 passes for 1,108 yards and 13-TDs. Despite the injuries, Parkview’s offense is averaging 37.5 points per game.

The Grayson Rams find themselves in a similar position as Parkview, winning three out of their last four ballgames. Grayson is averaging 439.7 yards of offense per game with 244.7 of that coming through the air. Quarterback Jeff Davis has thrown for 2,051 yards and has completed 72.8% of his passes this season, with 25-TDs and just one interception in 206 pass attempts. His top receivers have been John Cineas (37 receptions, 651 yards, 6-TDs), Aiden Taylor (35 receptions, 487 yards, 7-TDs) and Alex Sanchez, (30 receptions, 423 yards, 4-TDs). Dylan Elder and Elijah Miller have combined to rush for 950 yards and 10-TDs. The Rams defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 28 times while the secondary has intercepted 11 passes.

The road to a region title is a little different for these teams. Parkview would claim the region title with a win and an Archer loss, while Grayson would win the region title with just a win as they have the head to head win over Archer. Parkview should be able to keep this game close at home. Their ability to run the ball and mix in throws to Matthews should keep Grayson off balance for most of the game. But we like Grayson to have the final say in this matchup. Rams by 4.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 12

It’s hard to believe that we are down to the last week of of the regular season for Georgia High School Football. This past Friday certainly provided some outstanding games as several teams battled for region titles. However, there are still games with plenty of meaning this coming week as teams fight to qualify for the playoffs. Here is a look at our Top-10 teams in each classification.

In Class 7A, Grayson finds themselves back in the Top-10 this week as they got a big win over Archer. They replace Newton who was upset by South Gwinnett. Thomas County Central moves up one spot in the Class 6A rankings. They swap spots with Lee County, whom they beat by a touchdown in a battle of South Georgia powers. The remainder of the 6A rankings remains unchanged.

The bottom of Class 5A has been topsy turvy over the last few weeks and this week is no exception as Hiram and Greater Atlanta Christian are back in the rankings at No. 8 and No. 9. Meanwhile, it’s the Harris County Tigers who take over the No. 10 spot and find themselves in the Top-10 for the first time this season. There was plenty of shuffling in Class 4A as Spalding knocked off Perry in a battle of Top-10 teams. The win moves Spalding up to No. 5 while Perry drops to No. 6. Troup, Stockbridge and Central-Carrollton all move up one spot, while LaGrange rounds out the Top-10 at No. 10 for the first time this season. LaGrange and Troup, who are county rivals, while face off for a chance to win a share of the region title this Friday.

The Top-10 teams in Class 3A all held serve this week; there were no changes there. In Class 2A, Cook defeated Fitzgerald. With the loss, the Purple Hurricanes dropped to No. 7 this week. Cook, who initially had to forfeit games, had those wins reinstated, pending an additional court date with the GHSA. It was an interesting turn of events. The Cook Hornets are unranked this week.

In Class A-Division I, it was the Bleckley County Royals getting a big win over previous No. 2 Swainsboro. The win moves the Royals up to No. 4 this week, while Swainsboro drops to No. 5. Trion and Commerce are up to No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, while the rest of the rankings remain unchanged. Finally in Class A-Division II, it was Aquinas pulling off the big win over Greene County. With the win, the Fighting Irish are back in the rankings this week at No. 7, while Greene County drops to No. 9.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 11 – Part II

We have reached the penultimate week of the Georgia High School Football regular season. This week in our Eight Greats Around the State, we take a look at games that will have a direct impact on region championships.

First up the Spalding Jaguars host the Perry Panthers. Both of these teams have put up big numbers this season, but can Spalding keep pace with the Panthers passing attack? Down in Southwest Georgia the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets will host the Lee County Trojans. No one has been able to slow down the Jackets so far, can Lee County and their star Ousmane Kromah be the kryptonite for TCC?

Down in South Central Georgia, the Valdosta Wildcats will host the Colquitt County Packers. Colquitt County has rolled through their schedule this season with a powerful offense. Can Valdosta’s ground game keep the Pack sidelined? Finally, in Middle Georgia, the Warner Robins Demons host the Jones County Greyhounds. Will Warner Robins lay claim to another region title or will the Greyhounds get a win over one of their former teammates?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Spalding Jaguars have already clinched a first round home playoff game and can clinch their first region title since 2003 with a win on Friday night. The Jaguars offense has been hard to stop this season as they are averaging 39.8 points per game. As a team, Spading is averaging 143.7 yards per game through the air and 212.4 yards per game on the ground. Senior quarterback Curt Clark has accounted for over 2,100 yards of total offense, as he has thrown for 1,282 yards and rushed for 839 yards. Cedric Evans has been the top receiver with 35 receptions for 612 yards and 8-TDs to pace the Jaguars.

The Perry Panthers are in search of their fourth consecutive region title and can clinch that with a win on Friday night. The Panthers have not lost since Week-1 when the fell to Class 6-A Houston County by a touchdown. They are led by quarterback Colter Ginn (1,530 passing yards, 11-TDs), running back Ahmad Gordon (1,032 yards, 20-TDs) and receiver Dakari Anderson (43 receptions, 662 yards, 1-TD). The Panthers are averaging 43.7 points per game. Perry’s defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 22 times, forced 17 turnovers and is allowing 20.2 points per game.

If Perry is going to win another region title, they will have to find a way to slow down Curt Clark, as he is the straw that stirs the drink for Spalding. Meanwhile, Spalding will need to find a way to harass Ginn and throw off his timing. This game should go down to the wire, but we like Perry edge Spalding out this Friday. Panthers by 4.

The Skinny

The Region 1-6A title is on the line on Friday as Thomas County Central looks to claim their second straight region title. The Jackets have now won 18 consecutive regular season games. This season, the Jackets defense continues to dominate, as they’ve posted four shutouts and are allowing just 5.8 points per game. Thomas County Central has forced 13 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 9 times. Junior linebacker Jayden Rubbo leads the team in total tackles (38) and tackles for loss (12). The Jackets offense is averaging just over 45 points per game and is averaging 147.5 yards per game through the air and 179.9 yards per game on the ground.

The Lee County Trojans are winners of their last four games entering this week. Their only loss came at the hands of Class 7A Colquitt County. The Trojans are averaging 44.6 points per game. The Trojans generate most of the offense with the ground game with 2,217 team rushing yards and are led by junior running back Ousmane Kromah. Kromah has tallied 1,124  yards and 13-TDs. Kromah also leads the team in receiving with 19 catches for 374 yards and 6-TDs. The Trojans defense is allowing 19.2 points per game and has sacked opposing quarterbacks 38 times this season.

Both of these teams have dominated region competition. For Lee County to go on the road and get the victory, they will need to get Kromah going. For Thomas County Central, they will have to contain Kromah and control the time of possession. We believe Kromah will get his yards, but believe Lee will come up a little short this week. Jackets by 6.

The Skinny

The Valdosta Wildcats enter Friday’s contest on a three game win streak. It’s hard to believe that this would be their first region title since 2016. Valdosta offense is averaging 407 yards per game with the bulk of that coming by way of the ground attack. As a team, Valdosta has rushed for 2,616 yards. Freshman Deron Foster leads the way with 620 yards and 8-TDs, but Todd Robinson (561 yards, 4-TDs), Shaekvious Wright (409 yards, 3-TDs) and Prince Jean (402 yards, 6-TDs) have all helped to shoulder the load. Jean also leads the team in receiving with 25 receptions for 366 yards and 3-TDs. On defense, Eric Brantley has been a tackling machine; racking up 79 total tackles, including 28 tackles for loss. Brantley also leads the defense with 10 sacks on the season.

The Colquitt County Packers ran their record to 8-0 after a big win over Lowndes last week. The Packers have now won 19 consecutive regular season games. Though eight games, Colquitt is averaging 453 yards of total offense with 254.6 through the air and 198.5 on the ground. Quarterback Neko Fann has thrown for 2,002 yards and 26-TDs while completing 62% of his passes. Ny Carr (46 receptions, 856 yards, 16-TDs), Zay Williams, (34 receptions, 539 yards, 5-TDs) and tight end Landen Thomas (24 receptions, 412 yards, 3-TDs) have paced the Packers receivers. Linebacker Nick Pace has recorded 88 total tackles,  while the defense as a whole has sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times.

Valdosta will have the advantage of playing in front of the home crowd, but we expect the Packers to travel well. Valdosta can win this game by controlling the clock with their ground game. They are going to have to harass Colquitt’s Fann into making bad throws. Easier said than done. We like the visiting Packers by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Warner Robins Demons are winners of their last three games. The Demons are the two time defending State Champions. Their losses this season have only come at the hands of teams in higher classifications. The Demons are averaging 24.5 points per game this season, but that number increases to 31.6 points per game in their five victories. The offense is led by quarterback Judd Anderson, who has thrown for 1,675 yards while Isaiah Canion leads the team in receiving with 938 yards on the year. The Warner Robins defense is allowing 27 points per game.

The Jones County Greyhounds have won five straight games entering this week. They are averaging 39.8 points per game. The offense is generating 378.7 yards per game with 220.8 yards coming through the air and 156.9 yards per game on the ground. Junior quarterback Devin Edmunds has thrown for 1,662 yards and 19-TDs. Tyler Stewart (33 receptions, 793 yards, 14-TDs), Jaivon Solomon (28 receptions, 471 yards, 4-TDs) and Zion Ragins (22 receptions, 391 yards, 5-TDs), are the top receivers to date. Ragins, Jaylen Dekle and Bruno Hicks have combined to rush for 687 yards and 8-TDs.

The Demons defense will need to find a way to slow down the pass happy Jones County attack. Meanwhile, Jones County will have to find a way to limit the lethal combination of Anderson to Canion if they are going to clinch their fourth region title in five years. Jones County might have a little incentive as Anderson started out the season as their starting quarterback. We expect a high scoring affair this week, but like the home town Demons to edge out the Greyhounds. Warner Robins by 5.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 11 – Part I

We have reached the penultimate week of the Georgia High School Football regular season. This week in our Eight Greats Around the State, we take a look at games that will have a direct impact on region championships.

First up, in Barrow County, Adairsville will host Bremen. Both of these teams are undefeated in region play. Bremen will have to go on the road and slow down the Tigers ground game to win the title. Down in Cochran, The Bleckley County Royals will host the red hot Swainsboro Tigers. Can Bleckley’s defense put a halt to the Swainsboro ground game?

Up in Commerce, the Tigers will host the Rabun County Wildcats. Commerce is riding high after beating Elbert County handily. Will the Wildcats bring the Tigers back to earth or is Commerce set to claim the region 8-DI title outright? Finally, in Norcross, the Norcross Blue Devils will host the Peachtree Ridge Lions. Peachtree Ridge is in the midst of a historic regular season. Can Norcross be the first team to put a scratch on their record in 2023?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Adairsville Tigers are in search of their second consecutive region title and can clinch that title with a win this week. Adairsville has reeled off five straight games coming into this week. The Tigers get the bulk of their offensive production on the ground, averaging 242.8 yards per game rushing and 135.6 yards per game through the air. Quarterback Jonathan Gough, (555 yards, 10-TDs) and running backs Jamarion Pullum (410 yards, 4-TDs), Ethan Bloom (390 yards, 7-TDs) and Tamarius Wilkey (252 yards, 4-TDs) have helped to power the Tigers’ ground attack. Gough has also thrown for 1,051 yards and 10-TDs. The Tigers defense has forced eight turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 10 times and is allowing 18.6 points per game.

The Bremen Blue Devils have also won five straight games coming into this week. They are in search of their first region title since 2008. The Bremen offense has plenty of weapons of their own and have been able to fin success on the ground and through the air. Running back Parr Folsom has good vision and speed and can run away from defenders once he reaches the second level. Meanwhile Sophomore Justin Faulkner and has proved to be a reliable receiving target for quarterback Carson Kimball. Bremen is averaging 27 points per game and allowing 15.1 points per game.

We expect this to be a back and forth matchup as both teams are growing in confidence on offense. Adairsville’s ability to dominate the ground game should be the difference in this game. Expect another close matchup between these two, but we like the Tigers by 4.

The Skinny

The Bleckley County Royals are winners of their last five ballgames  and will have one of their toughest tests to date as Swainsboro pays them a visit. Bleckley’s offense has been effective all season long, averaging 36.7 points per game. They are averaging 208.9 yards per game on the ground and 136 yards per game through the air. Joshua Stanley is tops on the team with 726 rushing yards and 12-TDs. Kam’Ryn Everett has also racked up 518 yards and 6-TDs to help pace the ground game. Marcus Newson (24 receptions 433 yards, 5-TDs) and Markeze Brown (22 receptions, 249 yards, 2-TDs) lead the Royals’ receivers. The Bleckley County secondary has intercepted 10 passes as the aforementioned Brown and Iverson Baker lead the team with three interceptions each.

Swainsboro is in search of their third consecutive region title and can lay claim to it with a win on Friday. Almost all of the Tigers offense will come by way of the ground game. They have rushed for 2,465 yards as a team; which averages just over 308 yards per game. The Tigers have only attempted 36 passes in their eight previous games. It has been running back by committee for the Tigers as Qin Brown (594 yards, 9-TDs), Jordon Williams (650 yards, 12-TDs), Demollo Jones (550 yards, 6-TDs) and Bryson Tarver (325 yards, 5-TDs) have led the way for the ground game. The Tigers defense is allowing 4.8 points per game and has pitched three shutouts this season.

Bleckley County will have their hands full trying to slow down Swainsboro’s punishing ground game. Expect for the Royals to counter with a Newson and Brown,  but we just don’t think that’s enough to keep the visitors at bay. Swainsboro by 12.

The Skinny

The Commerce Tigers are riding high after a big win last week over region rival Elbert County. The Tigers celebration over Elbert will be short lived as another juggernaut will pay Commerce a visit. The Tigers get almost all of their yardage from the ground game. Both Jaiden Daniels and TySean Wiggins have eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark this season and  have combined to rush for 2,446 yards. Jacari Huff has also been a consistent contributor to the Tigers ground game. The Tigers have won six straight games and are averaging 33.6 points per game. The defense has shutout two opponents this season and is allowing just over 14 points per game this season.

The Rabun County Wildcats bounced back from their last against Elbert County by shutting out Athens Christian. The Wildcats are the defending region champs and have won eight consecutive region titles. They can force a three way tie for the region title with a win this week. The Tigers are averaging 33.4 points per game. The Wildcats have a balanced attack with 176.8 yards per game through the air and 172.4 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Ty Truelove has thrown for 1,519 yards and 15-TDs while fellow sophomore Reid Giles leads the team in rushing with 762 yards and 10-TDs. Willie Goodwyn is the team’s top receiver with 34 receptions for 754 yards and 11-TDs.

Commerce has dominated this series but Rabun County has won the last two. For Rabun to win three in a row, they will have to shut down Wiggins and Daniels and the Commerce ground machine. For Commerce, they can’t have a let down from an emotional victory last week. We believe this game is close with Rabun County giving Commerce all they can handle, especially through the air. But we believe too many options on the ground for Commerce. Tigers by 6.

The Skinny

The Norcross Blue Devils come into this week’s matchup winners of their last six games. Norcross’ only loss come at the hands of No. 1 ranked Mill Creek earlier this season. The Blue Devils have quietly put together another outstanding season, averaging 36 points per game and allowing 13 points. Norcross has leaned a little more on the run this season, averaging 208.3 yards per game on the ground and 128.8 yards per game through the air. Dual threat quarterback A.J. Watkins leads the team with 609 rushing yards and 9-TDs, while Kevin Maven-Winchester has added 460 yards and 3-TDs.

The Peachtree Ridge Lions can clinch their first region title since 2008. The Lions have done most of their damage through the air, averaging 231 yards per game passing and 158.8 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Darnell Kelly has now thrown for 1,811 yards and 23-TDs. Myles Abernathy has been the big play receiver for the Lions with 33 receptions for 473 yards and 11-TDs. Rhari Thomas and Lamar White have also been top contributors as they’ve combined to catch 80 passes for 834 yards. The Lions defense is allowing 11.6 points per game, and have sacked opposing quarterbacks 18 times and intercepted 15 passes.

This is the Lions’ best team in quite some time. Expect Peachtree Ridge to keep the pressure on Norcross with their ability to move the ball through the air. However, we beleive Norcross’ ability to run the ball might be the difference in a close ball game. Blue Devils by 6.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 11

We are down to the final two weeks of the regular season for Georgia High School football. Region playoff seeding is starting to become more clear, but some late season upsets have made other region races more difficult to predict. Here is our Top-10 in each classification.

In Class 7A, it was the Parkview Panthers scoring an upset over Newton to jump right back into the region title picture. Newton drops to No. 10 this week while Parkview is back in the rankings at No. 9. In Class 6A, Marist knocked off North Atlanta in a battle of Top-10 teams. That knocked North Atlanta from the rankings this week. Meanwhile Thomas County Central shutout Houston County on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Bears still hang in at No. 10 this week.

In Class 5A, the Dalton Catamounts scored an upset victory over the Calhoun Yellow Jackets on Friday. Dalton makes their first appearance in the rankings as a result while Calhoun falls from No. 5 to No. 10 this week. Over in Class 4A, the Trinity Christian Lions fall from the Top-10 after losing to LaGrange. Region 4 now has 4 teams all with a 4-1 region record. Meanwhile, the Stockbridge Tigers have won their 6th straight game and are in at No. 10 this week.

Cedar Grove won a matchup of Top-10 teams in Class 3A as they downed Sandy Creek. The Saints stay at No. 1 this week while Sandy Creek falls to No. 9. In Class 2A, the Spencer Greenwave upset the Northeast Macon Raiders on Friday. The win catapults The Greenwave into the rankings for the first time this season as they check in at No. 9 while Northeast falls to No. 10.

In Class A-Division I, the Commerce Tigers won a big region matchup as they defeated the Elbert County Blue Devils on the road. The win has Commerce up to No. 4 this week while Elbert falls to No. 8. Finally, in Class A-Division II, The Aquinas Fighting Irish fell to Washington Wilkes and falls out of the Top -10. Their loss made way for the Portal Panthers to make their debut into the rankings as they are at No. 10 this week.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 10 – Part II

We are entering the last quarter of the regular season for Georgia High School Football. Time is getting shorter for teams to make their move for playoff positions. Some region winners across the state have already been decided. While the playoff picture is starting to take shape, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. This is Part II of our weekly feature that we call Eight Greats Around the State, where we take a look at eight intriguing matchups this week.

First up, the Schley County Wildcats will host the Manchester Blue Devils. By all of our accounts, this game will decide the region winner. Can the Blue Devils ground game run away with an upset victory or will the balanced Wildcats claim their second straight region title? Next up, the North Atlanta Warriors will take on the Marist War Eagles. Marist is in search of their fourth consecutive region title. Can the speedy Warriors dethrone Marist?

The Cedar Grove Saints have been atop the Class 3A poll for quite some time, but this week, they face the team that beat them in last year’s state title game. The Sandy Creek Patriots come calling in a matchup of two of the top teams in Class 3A. Can the Patriots ground game get the job done again? Or will E.J. Colson and Bo Walker help guide the Saints to another region title? Finally, the Vidalia Indians host the Appling County Pirates. Vidalia has looked good so far in region play but now face one of the perennial favorites. Is Vidalia a contender, or does Appling County get a big win and keep pace with Toombs and Pierce County?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Schley County Wildcats have taken on all comers without a hitch this season. They are seeking their second consecutive region title. We have been singing their praises all season. They have an offense averaging 45.1 points per game and a stout defense that is only allowing 13.7 points per game. It’s a defense that has forced 26 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 22 times. Hayden Walker leads the team with five sacks while Jack Clark has recorded 40 total tackles to lead the team in that category. On Offense, Jaylewis Solomon (30 receptions, 595 yards, 8-TDs) and Kendall Sims (21 receptions, 248 yards, 4-TDs) are the top receivers for quarterback Jay Kanazawa. Kanazawa has now thrown for 1,512 yards and 19-TDs.

The Manchester Blue Devils have won their last four games coming into this week and have been impressive, especially on defense. They are allowing just 7.1 points per game and have not allowed more than 20 points to any single opponent this season. Junior linebacker Bobby Ellison leads the team in total tackles with 53. They’ve sacked opposing quarterbacks 18 times with big Justus Terry recording 6 to lead the team. Offensively, the Blue Devils are a running team, as they’ll only attempt about 5 passes per game. Manchester uses running back by committee with Quavion Cooper, Darius Favors, Keenan Whitaker and Benni Kempson, all underclassmen, who have combined to rush for 1,437 yards and 11-TDs.

Manchester will need to control time off possession and convert drives into scores this week if they are going to pull off the upset. We believe this will be the toughest region opponent for Schley, but their explosiveness and experience should be enough to get past the Blue Devils. Wildcats by two touchdowns.

The Skinny

The North Atlanta Warriors have put together their best season in school history and can tie the school records for wins in a season with one more victory. The offense is on pace to break the school record for points in a season and is currently averaging 42.4 points per game. The Warriors have scored at least 30 points in all of their previous contests. Quarterback Ian Reynolds has thrown for 1,215 yards on the season with Caden Benson, Grant Thompson and Henry Debardeleben being his primary targets. Meanwhile, Demeitrus Barnes leads the team in rushing. North Atlanta’s defense is allowing 12.8 points per game and has not allowed more than 22 points in a contest this year.

The Marist War Eagles have won six straight games after dropping their season opener. Marist is in search of their fourth consecutive region title. Marist’s offense has been churning out 33 points per game while their defense is allowing just 12.2 points per game. Marist has used several different ball carriers but expect for quarterback Jack Euart and running backs Joesph Pizzo and Walker Richens to help lead the ground game. The War Eagles are averaging well over 200 yards per game on the ground this season.

It has been said that styles make fights. This week the speedy North Atlanta Warriors will face a physical Marist War Eagle team. The winner of this game is the prohibitive favorite to win the region with the season winding down. We believe Marist can control the clock and the scoreboard with their ground game. War Eagles by 11.

The Skinny

The Cedar Grove Saints have played one of the most challenging pre-region schedules across the state. The Saints won their first region game and would almost be certain to clinch their sixth region title in seven years with a win on Friday. Junior quarterback E.J. Colson has thrown for over 1,400 yards and 18-TDs. The Saints have relied on a trio of underclassmen at receiver as Boden “Bo” Walker, Andrew Leslie, and Devin Carter have combined to catch more than 20 passes each Walker is also the team’s leading rusher. Heading into last Friday’s game, Walker had rushed for 639 yards and 10-TDs. Defensively, Cedar Grove is allowing 34.2 points per game. Through the first seven games, they have sacked opposing quarterbacks 12 times and forced 8 turnovers.

The Sandy Creek Patriots survived a scare last week against Carver of Atlanta and will now look to claim their first region title in 10 years. The Patriots have relied heavily on the ground game as they are averaging 243 yards per game on the ground while they are passing for just over 117 yards per game. Amarai Latimer (985 yards, 14-TDs) and Dalen Penson (667 yards, 8-TDs) lead the Patriots rushing attack. Meanwhile, Rich Vanzant leads the receivers with 21 receptions for 293 yards and 1-TD. Not only is Amari Latimer the team’s leading rusher, but he also leads the team in total tackles with 58 as he doubles as a linebacker. The defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 21 times with Evan Harvey accountable for 9 of them. The defense has forced 12 turnovers and is allowing 17.5 points per game.

These two teams met twice last season with Cedar Grove winning the regular season game and Sandy Creek winning the rematch in the state title game. Can Sandy Creek keep an explosive Cedar Grove team in a low scoring grind it out type of game? We believe they’ll need to turn this game into a slugfest. However, the Saints have too much offense. Cedar Grove by 10.

The Skinny

The Vidalia Indians currently sit atop the region 3-AA standings. But the road to their first region title in since 2020 will be tumultuous as they face three Top-10 teams over the next three weeks. The Indians enter this week winners of their last three ball games. They‘ve won those games by almost the exact same score. They Indians are allowing 12.4 points per game and scoring 30.4 points per game. Their two losses came by a combined 9 points and both of those games were against opponents from higher classifications. The Indians will rely heavily on the legs of Antonio Barron who leads the team in rushing with well over 700 yards on the year. Barron is also a capable receiver out of the backfield.

The Appling County Pirates will look to crash the Indians homecoming party this week. The Pirates bounced back from a 3-point loss two weeks ago to get a big 61 point shutout victory last time out. They are averaging 34 points per game and allowing 13 points per game. As we mentioned a few weeks ago, quarterback Dayson Griffis will lead the Pirates offense. He’s a crafty player with a live arm. His primary receiver will be Camden Hickox. Look for Jamarion Williams aka “the truck”, to get the bulk of the carries at running back. Don’t be surprised to see Trent Griner get some carries as well as he’s shown he can also put up big rushing numbers. All of the Pirates backs benefit from running behind a line that is anchored by Jaylon Smith and Rhett Stone.

Vidalia will certainly enter their toughest stretch of the season beginning Friday night. Their offense is reliant on the ground game, so expect Appling’s Jailon Bennett and Darion Smith to be key in fitting the run on defense. Appling is a little deeper on offense and we beleive that will be the difference even on the road. Pirates by 12.
