TFR Week-4 GHSA Football Poll

Our Week-4 polls have been published and are listed below.

There not many changes in the 7-A poll this week. Colquitt County remains a top the poll. Hillgrove makes their first appearance in the poll this season, while McEachern re-enters the top-10.

Class 6-A saw the Sequoyah Chiefs make a statement on Friday beating the Dalton Catamounts by 28 at home. The Chiefs make their debut in the polls at No. 8. The remainder of the poll remains unchanged.

There are no changes in the class 5-A poll as there were no losses in the top-10. Rome flexed their muscle on Friday, defeating region rival Kell, 35-6.

In Class 4-A, Chapel Hill takes the place of Sandy Creek at No. 10. The Panthers beat Starr’s Mill 49-19, while Sandy Creek lost this week to Ridgeland.  Burke County moves up to the No. 9 spot after a win over Wilkinson County. The rest of the top 10 remains unchanged.

There was a bit of movement within 3-A, but no new entrants. Cedar Grove lost to 7-A McEachern by a touchdown, but still remains at No. 2. Benedictine drops one spot after falling to 4-A No. 1 Blessed Trinity. Westminster and GAC drop to No. 9 and 10 respectively after losses this week.

In 2-A, the top 7 spots remain unchanged. Heard County drops out of the poll after a loss to Rockmart. While the Harlem Bulldogs make their first entry into the poll at No. 10.

In 1-A Public, Mitchell County is back into the top 10 this week after the beat Miller County soundly on Friday night. Manchester drops 4 spots after losing to Northeast, Macon.

The top 10 in Class 1-A Private remains unchanged. Only half the teams were in action this week. All of them were winners by convincing margins.

Conversation with Coaches – Kyle Adkins – Campbell Spartans

Last season, Coach Adkins led the Spartans to the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This season, they are looking to build on the success from 2017. Conversations with Coaches – Jay Poag – Christian Heritage Lions

Head Coach Jay Poag begins his third season as head coach of the Christian Heritage Lions.  The Lions are in their seventh season of play at the GHSA level. Christian Heritage will face a challenging slate of games in 2018 including a 3 game stretch of regional foes Mt. Zion, Carroll, Darlington, and Trion. All of whom made the playoffs last season. Coach Poag joined us to talk about his teams fast start, some of the surprising players thus far and the teams ” international” flair. Coach Poag also gives us a brief preview of what to expect as the Lions take on the LaFayette Ramblers on Friday night. Tune in as we talk CHS Lions football with Coach Poag.

Conversations with Coaches – Justin Brown – Trion Bulldogs

We had a chance to spend some time with Trion Bulldogs alum and current head coach, Justin Brown. Coach Brown is in his 7th season at Trion. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have qualified for post season play five out of the last six years. Coach Brown discusses some of the challenges this year’s team faces with inexperience after the loss of several key players to graduation. The Bulldogs are off to a fast start and have probably exceeded a lot of expectations early on this season. Coach Brown tells us about some of the pleasant surprises that the team has received early in the season as well as other players to watch. He also gives us a preview of what to expect on Friday night as the Bulldogs face one of their long time rivals, Armuchee. Tune in as we talk Trion football with Coach Brown.

TFR Week-4 Eight Greats Around the State – Part II

In Part II of our Week-4, Eight Greats Around the State, we feature a two south Georgia showdowns. The first has 5A Bainbridge visiting 2A Brooks County. Both teams will be looking to get back into the win column. This one features two teams that love to run the ball; whose rushing attack will come out on top…The second south Georgian showdown features the Valdosta Wildcats traveling to Moultrie to take on the Colquitt County Packers. Do the Wildcats have what it takes to slow down the Pack attack…In metro Atlanta, Westminster and Marist renew a rivalry that’s sat dormant since 1997. Kyle Hamilton will be on display looking to help guide the War Eagles to another victory…And in northwest Georgia, the Rockmart Yellow Jackets host the Heard County Braves. We will be interested to see if the Braves can bounce back after falling to #1 Hapeville Charter last week. And we want to know if Rockmart is a pretender or contender.

The Skinny

 

Brooks County will look to rebound this week after taking one on the chin from one of the top single A programs in the state last week. The road won’t get any easier this Friday, as the Trojans will host the Bainbridge Bearcats for the first time in school history. If Brooks County is going to get back on track, they will need to get Jacolby Brown and Deon Fountain going in the run game. The Trojans are a run heavy offense, but Brown had shown the ability to make things happen through the air.

Bainbridge will be looking to get back on track this week after losing on the road to Tallahasee Lincoln last week. The Bearcats also feature an impressive ground game headed by Rashad Broadnax. The sophomore has rushed for 285 yards and 2-TDs on the young season. Tevin McCray has chipped in 111 yards on the ground this season and has a touchdown as well. We think that Roman Harrison and the Bainbridge defense will give Brooks just enough trouble to pull of the win this week on the road. Bainbridge by a touchdown.

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

Heard County will visit Rockmart as they face their second top-10 AA team in as many weeks. The Heard County Braves were beat by the Hapeville Hornets last week after keeping the game close during the first half. This week, the Braves will have to compete with the running back combination of ZJ Whatley and Javin Whatley. The two backs have combined for 205 yards and 4-TDs through Rockmart’s first two games. Juke Boozer is a big play threat for the Yellow Jackets offense. He is averaging 32.3 yards per reception.

Heard County will be led by running back and free safety, Aaron Beasley and quarterback Alijah Huzzie. The Braves proved they could move the ball down the field last week against Hapeville, they just could not capitalize on their opportunities. This has the potential to be a high scoring affair. Perhaps in a bit of a mild upset, we like Rockmart to win this one at home by the slimmest of margins…Jackets by 1.

 

 

The Skinny

 

Westminster and Marist have played 45 times in a rivalry dating back to 1957, but this will be the first meeting since 1997. The Westminster Wildcats fast start was derailed last week by a stingy St. Pius X Lions team. This week, they will try to get back on track as the host the Marist War Eagles. The Wildcats will need to find a way to get one of their quarterbacks going whether it by Chance Loeffler or Parks Harber. Last week, Harber led the way with 171 yards through the air.

Marist will counter the Wildcats passing attack with a defense led by Notre Dame commit Kyle Hamilton. Hamilton was special on special teams play last week turning a blocked kick and a kickoff return into points. We anticipate that Marist will control this game and do more than enough to take down the Wildcats this week. We like Marist to grind out a victory on the road. War Eagles by 13.

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

Perennial South Georgia powers Colquitt County and Valdosta will meet up on Friday at Mack Tharpe Stadium for the 46thtime. The host Packers have been slicing through their competition like a hot knife through butter. They have outscored their opponents 133-24. Daijuan Edwards continues to pace the Pack on the ground as he has racked up 433 yards and 6-TDs on the season. Quarterback Jaycee Harden seems to be settling in nicely for Colquitt County. He’s competing 67% of his passes and is averaging just over 150 yards passing per game this season.

Last week, the Cats got a bounce back win. Tate Rodemaker was very efficient at quarterback, going 16-18 for 222 yards and 3-TDs. Rajaez Mosley topped the century mark as well last week and scored a rushing touchdown. But the Cats will be facing their stiffest competition of the season. Colquitt is a national power. Valdosta will need to control the ball and may need to turn Colquitt over a time or two to keep this one close and pull the upset. We think that’s possible, but not probably. We like the Pack by 17.

TFR Week-4 Eight Greats Around the State – Part I

In Part I of our Week-4, Eight Greats Around the State, we feature a high-profile private school matchup as the Benedictine Cadets travel to Roswell to take on reigning 4A state champion, Blessed Trinity…In a pivotal region 7-5A matchup, the Rome Wolves travel down to face Kell. The Longhorns were the last team to beat Rome in the regular season…The David and Goliath matchup of the week features Cedar Grove and McEachern. The Cedar Grove Saints have already proven they can play with the larger schools of South Carolina and Alabama. Can they beat McEachern on the road and continue their hot start…They heavyweight, clash of the titans matchup this week will feature the Grayson Rams and Marietta Blue Devils. Perhaps the best of Cobb County versus the best of Gwinnett County. Can Grayson’s star-studded roster slow down the Blue Devils passing attack? Only time will tell…

The Skinny

 

Benedictine head Coach Danny Britt brings his Cadets to Roswell to take on the defending 4A state champs, the Blessed Trinity Titans. The Cadets have been off since a thrilling win against 4A Burke County in week one of the regular season. Will there be any rust? All eyes should be on Benedictine’s Rico Powers when the Cadets are on offense. He is the teams leading returning rusher. The Benedictine defense, led by Coleman Marini Jakeen Harris, John Dodd and Eric Hicks will have their hands full trying to contain the Blessed Trinity offense.

The Titans team is littered with talent highlighted on offense by running backs Steele Chambers and Elijah Green, quarterback Jake Smith and reliable Ryan Davis at receiver. The defense is led by UGA commit JD Bertrand and defensive lineman J.R. Bivens. We expect the Titans to get their stiffest test of the young season this Friday from Benedictine, but we do expect for Blessed Trinity to pass with flying colors; BT by 14.

 

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

This is perhaps the biggest game in Region 7-5A this season as the Rome Wolves travel to the Stockyard to take on the Kell Longhorns. The Longhorns were the last team to defeat Rome, who is in search of their third consecutive state title this season. The game features two of the region’s top quarterbacks as Evan Conley leads Kell while Knox Kadum directs the Rome offense. This season, Conley has passed for 256 yards and 5-TDs, while Ebony Jackson leads the Longhorns ground attack.

Rome lost several players to graduation last year on defense, but the Wolves have still shown they can get after it, led up front on their defensive line by Montrell Milsap, Octavieous Askew and linebacker Derricus Smith. Kadum and running back Jamious Griffin will spearhead the Wolves attack. Last week Griffin rushed for 3-TDs against North Clayton. Xavier Roberts is an electric wide receiver who will certainly test the Kell secondary. Rome has a lot of talent and experience across the board. No disrespect to the Longhorns, but we like Rome by 14 this week.

 

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

After a rough week-1, the McEachern Indians got back on track in week two by defeating South Cobb. This week, the Indians host a red-hot Cedar Grove Saints team. The Saints feature, by most accounts, the nation’s #1 high school wide receiver, Jadon Haselwood. McEachern will be led by sophomore QB Carlos Del Rio. Running backs Paris Brown and Jordan Simmons have combined for 200 yards rushing and 4-TDs on the season for the Indians. McEachern also has a trio of pretty good wide receiver themselves, in Javon Baker, Dacari Collins and Nicoy Morris.

Perhaps the best matchup to watch will be in the trenches as McEachern’s Jefferey Clark and Jamil Burroughs will try to disrupt the Cedar Grove offense. They will be lined up against a solid Cedar Grove offensive line that is anchored by Brandon Hall, Quentin Eagle and Michael Brooks. The Saints aren’t just a one-trick pony on offense as running back Robert Jones III has also shown some explosion this season. Pay no attention to the fact that Cedar Grove is a 3A program matched up against 7A McEachern. This is not your typical David vs. Goliath match-up. This game should have a lot of fireworks, but we like Cedar Grove to win by 4.

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

Perhaps the best team in Cobb County takes on the best team in Gwinnett County as the Grayson Rams travel to Northcutt Stadium to take on the Marietta Blue Devils. This will certainly be a star-studded event as several players on both sidelines will be playing on Saturday’s in the near future.  One matchup that should be fun to watch is the Grayson defensive line (Kevin Harris, Tru Thompson) against Jake Wray and the Marietta offensive line. Conversely, can Arik Gilbert and BJ Ojulari cause problems for Grayson’s offensive line that is anchored by Trent Jones, Jakari Clark and Wanya Morris.

Other questions that we have about this game…Will Ramel Keyotn line up against Kenyatta Watson? Can Owen Pappoe help cause disruption to the Marietta aerial assault led by Harrison Bailey? Oh by the way, Bailey has already passed for over 1,000 yards on the season. He’s averging a hair over 362 yards per game. Arik Gilbert and Ramel Keyton are his primary targets. Each have over 400 yards receiving on the young season.This shouldn’t be a run-away by either team, we believe Grayson is the more physical of the two, we like them to win this one by 10.

TFR Week-4 Cherokee County Football Preview

Region play continues for Region 6-6A in week-4. The Sequoyah Chiefs will host the Dalton Catamounts in a pivotal game early in the season. Can the Chiefs break their current streak of losses to the Cats? Creekview will host Osborne as it is homecoming week off of Owens Store Road. Who will step up big for the Grizzlies this week: Radam…Dirrim…Rhodes…Pfundt…or someone else…And finally in 6A the River Ridge Knights continue on in their grinder of a schedule as they go on the road to face the Allatoona Buccaneers.  Both teams are in search of their first region and season win.

In 7A, the Woodstock Wolverines will enjoy a bye week after a big win against Cambridge last week. The Cherokee Warriors will host tight-end Ryland Goede (UGA commit) and the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs. Etowah will be on the road again, this time traveling to Mableton as they take on the Pebblebrook Falcons.

The Skinny

 

The Sequoyah Chiefs will host the Dalton Catamaounts at Skip Pope Stadium in a key region 6-6A matchup. Last week Sequoyah won big, but Dalton will present a much tougher challenge. The Cats have won the last four matchups in the series. Dalton comes into this week a little banged up, but we don’t suspect the Chiefs will be taking them lightly. Jaymyr Gibbs is a workhorse for the Cats and even if he is not able to go this week, Tyis Love and Jeric Montgomery are more than capable offensive weapons for Coach Matt Land. Senior quarterback Landon Allen also left last weeks game early, but Bryce Houghton was able to lead Dalton in the second half.

The Chiefs were able to rest several players last week during their big win. They come in led by quarterback Collier Pecht. Pecht was perfect last week, completing all 5 of his passes for 118 yards and 3-TDs. The Chiefs grinded out 222 yards on the ground last week. They are led by Cole Jacobs, DJ King and Jackson Smith. Defensively, Jordan Bowers, Adam LaSelva and Emmanuel Jenkins will have the task of slowing down Gibbs, Love, Montgomery and Allen this week. We believe that these two teams could finish in the top-4 in the region. If the game is close, watch out for Dalton’s Ivan Mora who is an excellent field goal kicker. We think this one will be close, but we like the Chiefs by 6.

 

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

The Creekview Grizzlies will look to keep the momentum moving forward this week as they host the Osborne Cardinals for homecoming week. The Grizzlies got a big win last week as they took down Allatoona. Creekview got big performances on the ground from Cade Radam (121 yards) and quarterback Ethan Dirrim (152 yards, 1-TD). Dirrim also added a pair of touchdown passes as well to Paxton Nayman and Jacob Pfundt. The Grizzlies defense kept the Bucs offense in check most of last week, as Daniel Parsons and Cameron Cook combined for only 91 yards rushing.

Osborne comes in to this game a little banged up. Last week they played without their starting quarterback Malik Harris and running back Marquis Ladet. The Cardinals offense struggled without the two starters. This week, we expect much of the same. Even if Ladet and Harris are able to go this week, there is just too much talent on the Grizzlies roster this week. We like the Grizzlies to win big on Friday night. And by big, we think they win by 5 or 6 touchdowns.

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

 

The River Ridge Knights will go on the road to Acworth to face the Allatoona Buccaneers. Each team will be looking to break into the win column this season. The ever improving Knights had a break through last week as they were able to put together an impressive 80 yard scoring drive. If they are going to get their first region win of the season, they will need more of those productive drives against a very physical Allatoona team.

Last week, the Bucs showed some glimpses of what we expected from them all season, a very physical attack. They dug themselves into a hole early, but showed a lot of fight and resolve. Daniel Parsons and  Cameron Cook combined for over 90 yards on the on the ground. If the Knights can bottle up the Bucs run game and force Allatoona to go to the air; they might be able to take advantage of some opportunities as the Bucs passing game hasn’t really materialized much yet this season. Perhaps the most lethal weapon that River Ridge will have to defend against is the leg of Bucs place kicker Jude Kelly. We think both teams will try to impose their will through the ground game. Allatoona is probably a little ahead of River Ridge at this point in the season. We like the Bucs by 10.

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

The Etowah Eagles will visit the Pebblebrook Falcons for the first time in 17 years. Etowah will try to get back on track after dropping their last two games. The Eagles have been led the last two weeks offensively by running back Klivert Many. Many almost surpassed the century mark last week and scored the Eagles lone offensive touchdown.

The Eagles defense will have a tall task again this week as they will have to step up and defend against dual threat QB Jaquavious Jones. Jones has rushed for over 130 yards in two games this season. If the Eagles defensive line can contain Jones, they should have a good shot of taking down the Falcons. This has all of the makings of a smash-mouth type of game. We like Etowah by a field goal in this one.

 

 

The Skinny

 

The Cherokee Warriors will look to get back on track as they return home to Tommy Baker Field to take on the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs. Cherokee led North Hall last week at halftime, but could not keep the momentum in the second half. The Warriors defense kept the North Hall rushing attack in check for most of last week. This week, they will face another tough rushing attack as running back Keyon Brooks leads the Mustangs offense. Last season, Brooks rushed for over 1,500 yards and 12-TDs. Last week, Brooks rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jarrett Guest and tight-end Ryland Goede are also weapons that the Mustangs will use on offense. (Goede set the school’s all-time record for receiving touchdowns and receptionsand is a UGA commit.)

Cherokee continues to be led by quarterback Landon Ergle. He leads the Warriors in both rushing and passing. The Warriors offense has also received a boost early in the season from receivers Devin Ellison and Brady Bocherer. On defense,  linebackers Grant Hornbuckle, McKinley Hunter and defensive back Grant Mogelnicki lead the way for Cherokee.  Cherokee continues to show improvement as the young season moves forward, but we think that Kennesaw Mountain is a touchdown better this week.

TFR Week-3 GHSA Football Poll

Our Week-3 polls have been published and are listed below.

There were a few shake-ups in our polls this week.  Mill Creek is the lone new entrant in Class 7A as they defeated Norcross. Colquitt County claims the top spot this week after both Grayson and North Gwinnett lost to nationally ranked teams over the weekend.

In Class 6A, there are no real surprises at the top of the poll.  Dalton debuts in our poll this week at #8.

Southwest DeKalb enters the 5A poll at #10 this week. They are 3-0 on the season and scored a big win two weeks ago against county rival Stephenson.

Sandy Creek enters the 4A poll this week. The Patriots are undefeated on the young season and look to be trending in the right direction.

No changes at the top of the 3A poll, but North Hall, Jefferson and Dawson County make their way in to the top 10 this week.

In 2A Hapeville asserted their dominance against Heard County and maintain their stronghold at #1. Dublin is off to a hot start, and after a victory over Swainsboro, they enter the poll for the first time this season.

In 1A-Public, perhaps the biggest surprise was how Clinch County soundly defeated Brooks County, 37-7. Turner County makes their way into the poll at #10. The Rebels are off to a 2-1 start.

George Walton Academy makes their debut in the 1A-Private poll. They shut out Stratford Academy last week 35-0.

TFR Week-3 Eight Greats Around the State – Part II

Part II of our Week-3, Eight Greats Around the State features a top-10 battle as North Georgia and South Georgia clash when Lowndes travels to Parkview…Upset minded Peach County will travel to Leesburg to take on the defending Class 6A state champion Lee County Trojans. Class 3A Peach County is no slouch. Not only are they the 3A runner-up from 2017, they also knocked off 6A Warner Robins last week and have the pedigree to pull the upset…The Jones County Greyhounds will travel to Warner Robins to face the Northside Eagles. Will their passing attack be as efficient against Northside? And finally, in a battle of 4A powers, defending state champion Blessed Trinity travels to College Park to face Woodward Academy.  There are some great games going on all across the state. Make sure to get out and support these young men and their communities!

The Skinny

 

The Lowndes Vikings will visit the Parkview Panthers in an early season 7A top-10 matchup. Both teams have been relatively untested early on in the season, but all of that will change on Friday in the Big Orange Jungle. Lowndes is led on offense by quarterback Andrew Koenemann, running back Travis Tisdale and receiver Tony Wiseman. The Vikings have been able to run and pass the ball effectively. So the Panthers will have their work cut out for them.

One of the battles to watch will be along the line of scrimmage. It will be interesting to see if Justin Triplet and Bryce Wilson can disrupt the Lowndes attack. For Parkview Jordan Williams and Jakeim Thompson led the way on offense. Malik Washington is always a big play threat for the Panthers. It will be interesting to see if the bye week help or hurt Parkview or if the long trip from Valdosta to Lilburn will have an effect on the Vikings. Lowndes is no stranger to traveling, but this team is untested. Even still, we like the Vikings by the slimmest of margins to get the win on the road by 1.

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

Peach County pulled off a big upset in Macon as they beat Northside Warner Robins last Saturday. This week they will attempt to duplicate that success against class 6A power, Lee County in a battle of the Trojans. Last week, running back Preston Simmons led the Lee County attack, scoring 3-TDs and picking up 79 yards on the ground. The Trojans will also be looking for someone to step in for Chauncey Magwood as he may be unavailable for this game.

The Peach County defense will be led by Clemson commit, Sergio Allen. They yielded 24 points to Northside Warner Robins last week, but may be facing a more difficult foe. Quarterback Jaydon Gibson accounted for three touchdowns last week; two through the air and one on the ground. While Peach County looks to be a contender in 3A we think Lee County is just too much this week. We like Lee by two touchdowns.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

The Northside Warner Robins Eagles will look to get back on track this week, but the opponent won’t be an easy one. The Jones County Greyhounds will bring their aerial assault into McConnell-Talbert Stadium on Friday night looking to go 3-0. Jones County is led by Hunter Costlow, who passed for 229 yards and 3 TDs last week against Baldwin. Jontavis Robertson and Maleek Wooten had big games receiving whil Semaj Ingram picked up over 100 yards for the Greyhounds.

Northside will counter with an offense led by quarterback Jadin Daniels and running back Eric Smith. The Eagles are averaging 210 yards per game on the ground early in the season, but Daniels has attempted 40 passes. So Northside isn’t afraid to mix up the run and the pass to keep the defense honest. Tubby McCall will lead the Eagles secondary as they try to slow down Maleek Wooten and company. Northside has owned this series, but the Greyhound passing game will be difficult to contain. This has the makings of a shoot-out, and we like Jones County by a field-goal to pull the upset.

 

 

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

The defending 4A state champion travels to College Park to take on the Woodward Academy War Eagles. Blessed Trinity has a very talented roster. The Titans come into this week after two dominating performances to open up the season. If Woodward is going to slow down the Titan express, they’ll need to find a way to slow down Elijah Green and Steele Chambers. The two backs have combined for 281 yards rushing and 4-TDs not he ground. And even if Woodward can slow down the ground game, Jake Smith is a veteran quarterback and has a veteran receiver in Ryan Davis who doesn’t miss many passes thrown in his vicinity. Davis has already hauled in 10 receptions and 1-TD this season.

The War Eagles are no slouch. The bounced back after a mild upset in week-1. Mark Wright and Tahj Gary will key the offense. Wright is a dual-threat quarterback who has passed for 213 yards on the season and rushed for 232. While Gary is averaging an astonishing 18.4 yards per carry through two games. Woodward is an extremely talented team, but we don’t believe there is enough fire-power for the War Eagles to hang with Blessed Trinity for four quarters. Blessed Trinity pulls away late and wins by 13.

TFR Week-3 Eight Greats Around the State – Part I

In Part I of our Week-3, Eight Greats Around the State, we feature a David and Goliath matchup as the Thomasville Bulldogs travel to Moultire to take on the Colquitt County Packers…In another cross-classification battle, the Coffee Trojans travel to Waycross to take on the Ware County Gators. Coffee came away victorious last year in Douglas; can Ware return the favor? In Class 2A, Hapevile Charter visits Franklin to take on the Heard County Braves. Both teams are ranked in the top two in most polls across the state. This one should be a dandy…Finally, we preview the Brooks County-Clinch County game. Brooks County goes to Homerville in hopes knocking of the defending class A-public champions.

The Skinny

This game might epitomize a “David vs. Goliath” matchup. Both Thomasville and Colquitt are at the head of the class in their respective classifications. Yet Colquitt, the 7A runner-up from last season, has to be the clear favorite at home. Last week the Packers Jaycee Harden showed off his arm, passing for 240 yards and 3-TDs. Nine different receivers caught passes for Colquitt County. Daijun Edwards again led the Packers in rushing with 112 yards and 3-TDs. The Colquitt County defense has already recorded 15 sacks and 3 interceptions in the first two games of the season.

Let’s not sell Thomasville short just yet. Last week, against rival Thomas County Central, freshman quarterback Chad Mascoe led the Bulldogs with 244 yards passing and 4-TDs. Senior Jakarius Tillman has been the most productive receiver with 153 yards and 2-TDs, while Tan Gelin leads the Bulldogs on the ground with 222 yards and 3-TDs on the season. So how does Thomasville win this game? Perhaps if Jaycee Harden struggles and the defense can bottle up Daijun Edwards, the Bulldogs will have a puncher’s chance. Even if that were the case, everything would have to go just about perfect on offense. We just don’t believe enough things will line up for Thomasville. They will be competitive, but we like the Packers by two touchdowns.

 

 

The Skinny

 

Ware County won a thriller at Burke County last week. This week, they return to Memorial Stadium to face the Coffee Trojans. The Ware Gators will look to get Dream Gainer going again this week. Last week he was limited by Burke’s defense. However, Thomas Castellanos was able to pick up the slack as he passed for 109 yards and rushed for 144 yards.

Coffee has relied primarily on the ground game thus far in 2018. The Trojans have already racked up 530 rushing yards in two games. Josiah Killiebrew leads the way. At 6’0” 269lbs, he’s a load for anyone to bring down. We think that Ware County has enough talent to hang with Coffee, but we like the Trojans to get the win in Waycross this week by a touchdown.

Hapeville Charter will travel to Heard County for a rematch of the 2017 semi-finals. While some of the star power from last season has graduated, these two teams still find themselves at the top of the polls and both look to be contenders for the Class 2A title. In their first weeks of play, the Heard County Braves outlasted LaGrange, while Hapeville Charter had little trouble with River Ridge.

We suspect much of the Braves offense will be centered around Aaron Beasley. In week-1 Beasley rushed for over 180 yards with 1-TD. Heard County will also need another stellar performance from their defense if they hope to walk out of Staples Stadium with a victory. They will need to slow down quarterback Jordan Slocum and running back Marcus Carroll. Carroll led the Hapeville offense with over 170 yards and 3-TDs last week. On paper, this game looks like a dandy, and perhaps, the best matchup of the week. In somewhat of an upset, we like Heard County to win the rematch by a field goal.

 

 

 

The Skinny

 

The best of class 1A-public will meet one of the best teams in class 2A. Both teams are coming off of a bye week. For Brooks County to win on the road at Clinch, they will need to find a way to slow down Trezman Marshall on both sides of the ball. Marshall rushed for 143 yards in week one. Wide receiver Jeremiah Johnson will be a matchup problem for Brooks. Johnson stands at 6’7” and is a big target for Clinch County.

Brooks County will feature a run oriented attack, led by Deon Fountain. In week-1, Fountain rushed for 133 yards and 3-TDs. Quarterback Jacolby Brown also chipped in the running game with 95 yards and 1-TD. Brooks won a squeaker last year at home. This year, we think it will be just as close and we like Brooks again to win by a field goal.
