Week 8 – Turd Furgeson Report Top-10

We are at the heart of the high school football season in Georgia. With some teams locked into some important battles to qualify for post season play. New entrants into the polls including North Gwinnett in 7-A; Whitewater, who with a win this coming week against Starr’s Mill, would be in the drivers seat in Region 3-5A; Kell re-enters the class 5-A poll as well; Woodward Academy also climbs back into our 4-A poll; and in Class-A Private, Savannah Country Day and Mt. Pisgah Christian make their first appearance in the poll.

We mentioned Whitewater and Starr’s Mill facing off, but some other matchups that could have playoff implications include McEachern @ North Cobb, East Hall @ Greater Atlanta Christian, Taylor County @ Schley County and Brookwood @ Meadowcreek to name a few. We will preview these games and a few more for our Eight Greats Around the State this coming week.

We are approaching the midpoint of the 2017 season. For most teams, that means the start of all important region play. Today we preview 3 games with region implications and one game featuring a perennial power and a state contender. Enjoy the previews and don’t be afraid to correct me where I’ve made mistakes.

TFR – Cherokee County Football – Week 6 Preview

Only two county teams are on the schedule this week and both of them are traveling. Cherokee travels to North Paulding to take on the the Wolfpack, while Woodstock travels to take on North Forsyth. Both of these out of county foes love to throw the ball around, so there could be a lot of points put on the scoreboard this week. These games should be good tune-ups for both Woodstock and Cherokee as the head into all important region play.

A few matchups to keep your eye on this week: Coffee @ Tift County, Macon County @ Taylor County, Westminster @ Cedar Grove and Harrison @ Allatoona.

TFR Week 5 – Eight Greats Around the State

It’s hard to believe that we are already into week 5 of the high school football season. Many communities are still digging out from destructive Hurricane Irma. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this natural disaster.

We must mention that while we had originally planned to preview eight games, the TCC – Valdosta game was rescheduled, so we will not preview that this week. So technically, this will feature seven greats around the state. Our two favorite matchups this week are the Peach County vs. Mary Persons game; and the Clinch County vs Irwin County game.  While Peach and Mary Persons are playing for middle Georgia supremacy, the Clinch Irwin game should go a long way in determining the Region-2 Class A champion.

No matter whether you are in the mountains of north Georgia, or the coastal plains, get out and support these boys and support your communities this Friday night!

TFR – Cherokee County Football – Week 5 Preview

As we look ahead to week 5, Region 6-6A begins region play. River Ridge will get their biggest test of the season when they visit region favorite Harrison. The Knights will be without starter Gino Portera. Can they find a way to minimize the output of one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Justin Fields?

There is also a pretty big rivalry game on the eastern part of the county as Creekview hosts Sequoyah. Only 8 miles separate these schools, but it’s not just neighborhood bragging rights that are at stake in this contest.  A win or loss be either team could go along way in determining which team  them is a playoff contender or playoff pretender.

Woodstock and Etowah will continue non-region play this week with both teams going on the road to face class 7-A opponents. It will be a good tune-up for both teams before all important region play. The Cherokee Warriors have the week off.

We hope that every student has used the extra 2-days of wisely, by hitting the books! Friday night football should cure any cabin fever that you might have developed. Get out and cheer these boys on this Friday!

Week 5 Turd Furgeson Report Top-10

Week 4 provided us with some great matchups. Some of the games this past week were either postponed or cancelled due to the impending hurricane. Perhaps some surprising results around the state: Macon County beating Fitzgerald, Archer downing Mill Creek, Colquitt shutting out Roswell and Stephenson beating Southwest DeKalb.

This week, some of the best matchups in the state include Irwin County traveling to Clinch County, Woodward Academy visiting Marist, Mary Persons hosting Peach County, and Sandy Creek hosting Starr’s Mill.

We hope everyone stays safe as Irma makes her way through Florida and Georgia. God speed.

I can’t speak for south Georgia, but waking up to crisp morning air her in North Georgia was a refreshing signal that fall is certainly around the corner. It will be absolutely beautiful weather for football this Friday evening. And although we have been treated to some great weather, we can’t forget about the impending storm that is bearing down on Florida and may impact our coastal counties here in Georgia. We hope that everyone stays safe this weekend.

TFR – Cherokee County Football – Week 4 Preview

Last week, Creekview and Woodstock took major steps in establishing themselves as the top programs in the county this season. There are still several contests left in the season, but these two programs have been most impressive in the early going. Woodstock held the Sequoyah run game in check for the most part Friday night, while getting a big game from WR Noah Frith. Creekview got a big game from Cade Radam on the ground to pace the Grizzlies over Cherokee.

This week, four of the six county teams are in action. All facing out of region foes. While these games won’t matter for state tournament seedings. They can provide a litmus test for Woodstock, Cherokee, Etowah and Creekview. Here are our previews:
