TFR – GHSA Football Rankings – Week 11

Week-11 is in the books for Georgia High School Football, as region standings are getting sorted out. There are several teams who have clinched a home playoff berth as the regular season is drawing to a close. In terms of the Top-10 rankings, Class 5A and Class A Division-I had no movement in the polls this week. Here is a breakdown on some of the movement in the other classifications.

In Class 7A, Colquitt County defeated Valdosta in a battle of Top-10 teams, the loss dropped the Wildcats down to No. 10 this week and moves Norcross up to No. 9. In Class 6A, the Langston Hughes Panthers continued their dominance of Region-5, defeating South Paulding by 54 points. The loss by South Paulding drops them out of the poll and makes way for Northside Warner Robins to jump back in at No. 9. Meanwhile, Lee County falls to No. 10 this week after losing to Thomas County Central.

In Class 4A, there was some shuffling at the bottom of the poll as both Stephenson and Trinity Christian, our No. 8 & 9 teams respectively, lost big on Friday. That made way for Wayne County and Burke County to jump back in to the Top-10 at No. 9 & No. 10 respectively. These two teams will face off this Friday to determine who will finish second in the region and host a first round playoff game.

Down in Class 3A, the Dougherty Trojans dropped back to back games and find themselves on the outside looking in this week in the rankings. They were shutout by region foe Carver-Columbus. Meanwhile, Dawson County claimed the Region-7 crown with a big win over Lumpkin County. That win catapults them into the Top-10 at No. 10 this week.

Over in Class 2A, it was the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes big over the Cook Hornets on Friday night in a battle of Top-10 teams. Cook’s loss has them down to No. 10 this week. Meanwhile, Laney’s stay in the Top-10 was short lived, as they fell to Putnam County Friday night. North Cobb Christian is in the Top-10 for the first time this season as they check in at No. 9.

Finally in Class A-Division II we have a new No. 1 this week, as the Johnson County Astros take over the top spot with another loss by previous No. 1 Early County. In other Top-10 action, Charlton County defeated Clinch County and can win the region title outright with a win on Friday. These two teams swap spots in the rankings this week with Charlton at No. 6 and Clinch at No. 7

TFR – Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 11

We have reached the penultimate week of the high school football regular season here in the great state of Georgia. Once again, five of our six Cherokee County teams will be in action Friday night. First up, the Cherokee Warriors will host the North Cobb Warriors. Cherokee will look to slow down the North Cobb rushing attack while also counting to improve their rushing offense. Next up, the Creekview Grizzlies will log their travel miles as they visit Rome to face the Wolves. We will see if the Grizzlies can find a way to solve the Rome riddle. The Sequoyah Chiefs will also log their fair share of miles this week as they travel over Acworth to face Allatoona. The way these two teams play defense, this game could be over shortly after 9pm. Finally, the River Ridge Knights will host the Etowah Eagles. Both of these teams need wins to stay alive in playoff contention.

The Skinny

The Cherokee Warriors are looking to keep their playoff hopes alive this week. Last week, the Warriors had a tough go of it as they fell to Walton. The Warriors fell behind early and weren’t able to keep pace with the Raiders. The Warriors have dropped five of their last six games. Cherokee is averaging 17.2 points per game and averaging 29.6 Running back Zi Johnson has been a bright spot over the last two weeks for Cherokee as he has transitioned back over to running back this season.

The North Cobb Warriors survived a scare from region rival Kennesaw Mountain. We’ve mentioned this before, but since losing Malachi Singleton to injury, quarterback Nick Grimstead to lead the team. He’s had plenty of help from running backs Ben Hall and David Mbadinga. The Warriors are winners of their last four games. Overall, North Cobb is averaging 26 points per game while allowing 15.6. A win this week would clinch a share of the region crown for North Cobb.

Cherokee has struggled a bit lately against the run. Unfortunately, North Cob has seemed to found their stride rushing the football. It goes without saying that Cherokee will need to take care of the football and try to find a way to run the ball. We believe that’s possible, but not probably. We like North Cobb by five TDs.

The Skinny

The Rome Wolves continued their mastery of Region 6-6A last week with a big win over River Ridge. The Wolves are averaging 40 points per game and allowing 10.3 points per game. However, during region play, Rome is averaging 54.7 points per game and allowing just 6.5 points per game including two shutouts. The Wolves are also winners of their last five games. Quarterback Reece Fountain has continued to put up big passing numbers as he’s thrown for 1,935 yards this season.

The Creekview Grizzlies snapped a two game losing skid as they defeated county rival Woodstock last week. The Grizzlies got over 280 yards rushing last week and were paced by Isaac Hubert. The senior running back has now rushed for 821 yards and 12-TDs to help pace the Creekview offense. The Grizzlies are averaging 19.5 points per game and allowing 15.6. Creekview kept their playoff hopes alive with their win last week. Can Creekview find a way to score points on the road this Friday night?

Rome has been head and shoulders the best team in region play to this point. The Wolves can clinch a home playoff spot with a win this week and the region title. Creekview could also clinch a playoff spot with a win on Friday, depending on some other results in region play. We believe the Wolves will continue their mastery of Region 6 this week. Rome by four touchdowns.

The Skinny

The Allatoona Buccaneers won their second straight game last week as they came from behind to defeat Etowah. The Bucs kept their playoff hopes alive with the win. Senior running back Jayden Ponder rushed for 191 yards a touchdown in the victory. Ponder has now rushed for 1,091 yards and 7-TDs on the year. Meanwhile, Vinnie Canosa, T.K. George, Mehki Buchannon and Ezra Odinjor played with a chip on their shoulder as they held Etowah to just 16 points last week. Allatoona is now averaging 22 points per game while allowing 22.7.

The Sequoyah Chiefs come off the bye week with hopes of hosting a playoff game. The Chiefs have won four of their last five games. The key for Sequoyah in those victories has been their defense, they are allowing 24.2 points per game, however, in their four wins, they are allowing just 7.7 points per game. The Chiefs defense has allowed freshman quarterback Colby Martin time to develop in his role as starter. The Chiefs are averaging 13.7 points per game, which has been more than enough to secure victories during four of their last five games.

This might be one of the quickest played games this season. Both teams will look to establish the ground game. If Allatoona can avoid turnovers, they could jump right back into the playoff discussion. Meanwhile the Chiefs defense might be one of the most underrated units in North Georgia. We believe the first team to 21 wins this ballgame. We like the Allatoona by 1.

The Skinny

The River Ridge Knights will look to get back into the win column and keep their playoff hopes alive this week. The Knights were unable to string together drives last week and did not take advantage of all of their opportunities. River Ridge is averaging 25.7 points per game and allowing 21.8. The Ridge is currently averaging 171 yards per game through the air and 124.1 yards per game on the ground. In their five wins this season, the Knights are averaging 35.8 points per game. However, in their three losses, the Knights are averaging just 9 points per game.

The Etowah Eagles will look to keep their playoff hopes alive this week as they travel across Woodstock to take on River Ridge. Etowah has dropped three of their last four games. They are averaging 25.6 points per game while the defense is allowing 22.2 points per game. We expect that Etowah will work to establish the ground game this week against the Knights with quarterback Xavier Mahoney and the Buffalo, Reece Wehr. Meanwhile, Etowah’s defensive backs have been up to the task all season, whether defending through the air and in run support. It will be a great matchup to see if Frank Mosley and Jamir Maxime can continue shut down the River Ridge wide receivers.

We are interested to see if River Ridge will look to attack Etowah’s secondary, or if the River Ridge defense will be able to contain Etowah’s young stars. We think the River Ridge will defend home turf this week. Knights by 8.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 11 (Part II)

We are down to the final two weeks of the regular season of Georgia High School Football. This is part II of our Eight Greats Around the State Georgia High School Football previews. This edition features big time matchups between some of the smaller classification schools. Games featured include Oconee County-Stephens County, Fitzgerald-Cook, Swainsboro-Bleckley County and Charlton County-Clinch County. Each one of these games will have major implications on home playoff positioning as we move closer towards the playoffs.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Oconee County Warriors are winners of their last two games and have a chance to really make Region 8-3A interesting with a win this week. The Warriors have been consistent running the football this season, averaging over 140 yards per game on the ground. It has been running back by committee for Oconee County as Whit Weeks, C.J. Jones and quarterback Mac Ricks have combined to lead the Warriors in rushing. Oconee is averaging 22.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 16.

The Stephens County Indians have won six consecutive games and have not lost a region contest to date. The Indians only loss was to Class A-Division-I Rabun County back on 8/26. Stephens Count comes in with a balanced attack on offense, as they average 168.3 yards per game through the air and 171.4 yards per game on the ground. Senior quarterback Ben Stowe has thrown for 1,259 yards and 11-TDs. His top receivers have been Cam’ron Lacey (27 receptions, 514 yards, 6-TDs), Corey Richie (23 receptions, 330 yards, 1-TD) and Jason Smith (19 receptions 274 yards, 3-TDs).

This is perhaps one of the two toughest regions in Class 3A. Stephens County would clinch at least a share of the region crown with a win on Friday night. Don’t be surprised if Oconee takes Stephens down to the wire…We believe they will. Oconee County by 2.

The Skinny

The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes have picked up this season where they left off in 2021. The Purple Hurricanes are looking to bring home another state title this season, but first they will have to deal with the Cook Hornets. Fitzgerald has been rather dominant this season, averaging 34.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 11.2. We expect for the Canes to establish the ground game behind Sylon Davis and Diondre Paschal. Fitzgerald will look to extend their current win streak over Cook to six games.

The Cook Hornets are having one of their better seasons in recent years. The Hornets had built an impressive resume of wins, but they could not find a way to get past region foe Dodge County last Friday night. Before last week, Cook had won five straight games. The Hornets are averaging 32.8 points per game and allowing 22.3. Cook is about as balanced on offense as a team can be. Through seven games they average 135.8 yards per game through the air and 134 yards per game on the ground

The Hornets appear to be the only thing standing in between Fitzgerald an a region title. We would like Cook more if they were playing this game at home. We don’t know if they will be able to keep up with Fitzgerald’s offense. We like the Purple Hurricanes by 13.

The Skinny

The Swainsboro Tigers have won 13 consecutive regular season games. They have been absolutely dominant this season averaging 40.4 points per game while allowing just 2.7 points per game. The defense has registered five shutouts on the season. The Tigers have done most of their damage on the ground, with Quindarius Brown (860 yards, 9-TDs) and quarterback Ty Adams (439 yards, 8-TDs) leading the way. As a team the Tigers have rushed for 2,417 yards this season. Meanwhile, they are only attempting about 3 passes per game.

The Bleckley County Royals will look to cause some havoc in the region standings this week if they can find a way to defeat Swainsboro. The Royals are averaging 36.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 10.3. Speaking of defense, the Royals have intercepted 10 passes this season with Tyler Wilcox leading the way with 4-picks. Through their first eight games, Bleckley County is averaging 135.5 yards per game through the air and 218.8 yards per game on the ground. Jahvon Butler has paced the Royals offense with 840 yards rushing and 13-TDs.

Bleckley County’s secondary has been outstanding, but we believe the only way that they really come into play this week is by run support, as we don’t expect Swainsboro will throw much at all this week. We don’t believe Swainsboro’s defense can shut out Bleckley, but we do believe they can limit them this week. We like Swainsboro by 11 at home.

The Skinny

The Charlton County Indians have won their last two games and are looking to clinch their first region title since 2009. The Indians are paced on offense by running back Jaylen Lilley. He’s rushed for 901 yards and 12-TDs on the season. The Indians are averaging 188.4 yards per game on the ground and just 37.1 yards per game through the air. Charlton is averging 27.5 points per game and allowing 18.2

The Clinch County Panthers are seeking their first region title since 2016. The Panthers have won five straight games coming into Friday night and have proven they can beat teams through the air and on the ground as quarterback Keegan Clayton has had success in both phases of offense the season. While Clayton has had success passing the ball, we still believe the Charlton County will look to establish the run early and often. The Panthers are averaging 36.6 points per game on offense and allowing 16.7 points per game on defense.

We know what hangs in the balance for both teams as the winner will earn the region title. Clinch County seems to be a bit more explosive on offense.  We believe that this game comes down to the wire, but we like Clinch on the road by 6.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 11 (Part I)

We are down to the final two weeks of the regular season of Georgia High School Football. This is part I of our Eight Greats Around the State Georgia High School Football previews. This edition features matchups between Valdosta-Colquitt County, South Paulding-Langston Hughes, Troup-Trinity Christian and Pace Academy-Stockbridge. Each one of these games will have major implications on home playoff positioning as we move closer towards the playoffs.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Colquitt County Packers are closing in on their sixth region title in eight years. Colquitt County has been dominant this season, averaging 39.3 points per game while the defense is allowing 12.3 points per game. The Packers have a balanced attack this season, averaging 175.4 yards per game through the air and 175.9 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Neko Fann has thrown for 1,440 yards and 16-TDs on the season, while Charlie Pace has rushed for 877 yards and 11-TDs. Receivers Ny Carr, Landen Thomas and Za’Mari Williams have combined to catch 79 passes for 1,173 yards and 12-TDs. The Packers defense have sacked opposing quarterbacks 25 times this season.

The Valdosta Wildcats might have been caught looking ahead to this week’s game as they were upset by the Camden County Wildcats. The loss halts the Wildcats 8-game win streak. Valdosta has done a fantastic job, turning things around from the 2021 season. The Cats have been doing most of their damage on the ground, rushing for twice as many passing yards as they’ve accumulated. Quarterback Todd Robinson has thrown for 793 yards and has also rushed for a team leading 485 yards. Ahmad Denson is second on the team in rushing with 456 yards and 3-TDs. The Cats are averaging 29.7 points per game while the defense is allowing just 5.7.

Colquitt Count has won eight of the last nine matchups in this series. While Valdosta has certainly been tough on defense, this Colquitt County team has already seen the likes of Cedar Grove and Lee County. Valdosta will present another difficult challenge for their opponent. We believe the Colquitt offense is flying too high for Valdosta to challenge them for region supremacy this season. We like Colquitt by 9.

The Skinny

The South Paulding Spartans have won five consecutive games as they enter this week’s tilt against Langston Hughes. The Spartans are averaging 137.8 yards per game through the air and 175.8 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Kasen Wiseman has thrown for 1,329 yards and 10-TDs, while Jamarion Wilcox has rushed for 1,705 yards and 24…yes 24 TDs. As a team the Spartans are averaging 41 points per game while the defense is allowing 26.7.

The Langston Hughes Panthers have won 17 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season. Hughes has been dominant on both sides of the balls as the offense is averaging 51.1 points per game while the defense is allowing just 7.3 points per game. The Panthers have a relatively balanced attack, averaging 256 yards per game through the air and 212.3 on the ground. Quarterback Prentiss “Air” Noland has thrown for 2,048 yards and 28-TDs. Six different receivers have caught at least 10 passes this season for the Panthers.

This game will go a long away in helping determine the Region title. A win by Langston will assure them a home playoff game. The same could be said for the Spartans, however, they have yet to play Douglas County. At the end of the day, we believe Langston is more explosive offensively. We like the Panthers by 13.

The Skinny

The Pace Academy Knights are winners of their last four games. While the Knights have won a state title, they have yet to win a region football title. They can force a three way tie with a win on Friday night. Pace is averaging 29.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 16.7. Speaking of defense, Pace Academy boasts some very talented defensive prospects including Hevin Brown-Shuler, Frank Caldwell, Jordan Burns and Davis Rice to name a few.

The Stockbridge Tigers are winners of their last five games. Overall, the Tigers are averaging 33.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 10.1. However, in their last five games, the Tigers are averaging 44.4 points per game while allowing 3.8. Defensively, Stockbridge has sacked opposing quarterbacks 24 times and intercepted 5 passes. Offensively, the Tigers will lean heavily on the run, as they are averaging 183.3 yards per game on the ground while passing for just 72.3 yards per game.

Stockbridge has been riding high these last five games, but we believe this Pace defense might be the best they’ve seen. Although, we believe we could say the same thing about Stockbridge’s defense lining up against Pace’s offense. We think this game might be low scoring and don’t be surprised to see Pace put a scare into Stockbridge, but we like the Tigers by 4.

The Skinny

The Troup Tigers are on the cusp of winning their first region title since 1987. They are winners of 8 straight this season, and 10 straight regular season games going back to 2021. The Tigers are averaging 162 yards per game through the air and 255.6 yards per game on the ground. By now, we know that Taeo Todd really makes Troup go. The junior dual threat quarterback has thrown for 1,232 yards and 14-TDs and rushed for 1,104 yards and 16-TDs. Quay Moss is Todd’s top receiving target with 20 receptions for 572 yards and 7-TDs.

The Trinity Christian Lions dropped a game last week to LaGrange, but are still in contention for the region title and a home playoff berth. The Lions had won five straight games before last week. They are averaging 229.4 yards per game through the air and 138.8 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Henry Brodnax has now thrown for 1,708 yards and 11-TDs. He has been spreading the ball around this season as eight different receivers have caught at least 10 passes this year. The Lions are averaging 22.7 points per game while allowing 19.2

We haven’t talked about defense a lot in this preview, but the pressure will be on Trinity Christian to find a way to slow down the Tiger Express. We don’t believe that Troup will get to their season average in points per game this week (44.5), but we do like the Tigers by a touchdown at home.

TFR – GHSA Football Rankings – Week 10

With Week-10 in the books, we are down to the final two weeks of the regular season. Last week, we saw some surprising upsets as some big games took place all across the state. Each classification saw some shakeup in the rankings this week. Here is our Georgia high School Football Ranking for Week-10.

Perhaps the biggest upset in Class 7A was Valdosta falling to Camden County. Camden got off to a slow start this season losing their first two games but they have put themselves in position to host a home playoff game with a win next week. The loss drops Valdosta to No. 9 this week. Meanwhile, Parkview was upset by Newton last week. The loss drops Parkview from the Top-10 and makes room for Norcross at No. 10.

Over in Class 6A, it was Northside Warner Robins who pulled of the big upset, defeating region rival Lee County by three. The loss drops the Trojans down to No. 6 this week. Lee County will have to bounce back as they will host the undefeated Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets this Friday in another pivotal region game.

Class 5A saw its shakeup at the bottom of the poll as Jefferson won big over previously ranked Loganville. The loss by the Red Devils dropped them our of the Top-10 this week. The Top-7 remains unchanged and the Kell Longhorns are back in the Top-10 at No. 10 this week

Down in Class 4A, the Top-6 teams remained unchanged but a little chaos ensued this week at the bottom as LaGrange upset Trinity Christian in Region 4. Wayne County also fell to Benedictine in a battle of Top-10 teams. Those results pushed Whitewater back up to No. 7 this week while Trinity Christian drops to No. 9 and LaGrange is back in the Top-10 this week at No. 10.

There was a big matchup in Class 3A as No. 1 Cedar Grove defeated No. 3 Sandy Creek by 15. Sandy Creek holds steady at No. 3, despite the loss. Meanwhile, Thomasville scored an upset win over Dougherty. That win moves the Bulldogs up to No. 8 while Dougherty falls to No. 9.

In Class 2A, the Top-5 teams did not change, however, there was some shakeup up the next 5. The Cook Hornets were upset by Dodge County. The loss drops Cook to No. 7 this week. Meanwhile, Callaway upended ELCA and took control of Region 5. ELCA is down to No. 9 this week. The Northeast Raiders were upset by the Spencer Greenwave Friday night. The loss drops Northeast from the Top-10 this week and made room for the Lucy C. Laney Wildcats to make their debut in the rankings as the Wildcats are No. 10 this week.

Over in Class-A Division I, it was Irwin County getting the big win over Brooks County this past Friday in a battle of Top-10 titans. The win by Irwin moves them up to No. 4 while Brooks falls to No. 7. The Commerce Tigers fall from the Top-10 as they drop a game to region foe Elbert County. Screven County rounds out the Top-10 at No. 10 this week as they find themselves ranked for the first time this season. There are many teams noteworthy in Class-A Division I, including Trion, Lamar County, Metter and Social Circle.

Finally down in Class-A Division II, the Top-7 teams remain unchanged. Manchester fell to No. 3 Schley County; and with the loss, the Blue Devils drop to No. 10. Meanwhile the Lincoln County Red Devils are back in the Top-10 with a win over Greene County. The Red Devils check in at No. 8 as they replace Aquinas in the rankings this week, who dropped out with a loss to Washington-Wilkes.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 10

It is getting to crunch time in Cherokee County as teams jockey for position to qualify for the State Football playoffs. This week, five of the six county teams will be in action as we enter the last three weeks of the regular season.

The Cherokee Warriors will travel down to Raider Valley to face the Walton Raiders. Both teams are coming off a win last week. Can Cherokee string together a run to make the playoffs, or will Walton have another big game running the ball? Next up, the River Ridge Knights will host the Rome Wolves. River Ridge will look to stay in contention for a home playoff game, while Rome will be looking to move closer to winning another region title. Can River Ridge break through against Rome or will the Wolves continue to show their mastery of Region 6?

Staying in Woodstock, the Etowah Eagles will host the Allatoona Buccaneers. Both teams like to run the ball, but they go about it in different ways. Etowah will look to spread Allatoona out, while Allatoona will line up in a traditional set. Which team will be more physical at the point of attack this week? Finally, the Creekview Grizzlies will look to get back on track as they host the Woodstock Wolverines. Can Woodstock spoil Creekview’s home finale or will Creekview stop the losing skid?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Walton Raiders got back on track last week with a big win over Kennesaw Mountain. The Raiders were one of our picks in the preseason to host a playoff game in Region 5, and that is still in front of them as they only need to win out to do so. The Raiders had leaned more heavily on the pass this season, but last week, Makari Bodiford had a breakout game as he rushed for 267 yards and 4-TDs. Bodiford has rushed for 958 yards and 11-TDs. Meanwhile, Junior quarterback Jeremy Hecklinksi has eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark passing as he has thrown for 2,084 yards and 20-TDs.

The Cherokee Warriors picked up a much needed region win their last time out as they held off Osborne. The Warriors were able to capitalize on some of Osborne’s miscues to help establish a 14-point halftime lead. There was a familiar face in the backfield, as Cherokee turned to senior Zi Johnson and he delivered with a team high 66 rushing yards and a touchdown.  Sophomore quarterback Tanner Savasir added to his passing totals as the first year starter has now thrown for 1,149 yards and 11-TDs.

Our opinion hasn’t changed that to qualify for the playoffs in this region, Cherokee will have to win at least two region games. That might be a tall task as the Walton offense seems to be clicking on all cylinders. We like the Raiders over the Warriors this week by three touchdowns.

The Skinny

The River Ridge Knights will from the bye week ready for the home stretch. The Knights are conceivably also still in the hunt for a home playoff game, although they need some help.  The River Ridge offense has looked to become more balanced but they are averaging a few more yards through the air (179.3) than on the ground (133.6). The Knights are averaging 28.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 17.1. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Spector has thrown for 1,114 yards and 9-TDs. Senior Jackson Head leads all receivers with 30 receptions for 365 yard and 4-TDs. Defensively, the Knights have sacked opposing quarterbacks 10 times and have forced 9 turnovers.

The Rome Wolves will look to continue their march towards a region title this week. The Wolves have dominated region opponents to this point. In region play, Rome is outscoring the opposition 164 to 19. That’s an average of 54.6 points per game and allowing just 6.3. And even more impressive, the last two region victories were shutouts. Quarterback Reece Fountain continues to have a fantastic junior season, as he has up to 1,597 passing yards on the year.

These two teams have met three times, and the margin of victory in those three games is 39 points. The last time these two teams played, it was River Ridge that handed the Wolves a loss, (in the 2nd round of the playoffs in 2020). We can expect for that to be in the back of Rome’s mind as they come to Woodstock this week. River Ridge’s offense has been pretty good this season, but we just don’t believe they can keep up with Rome. We like the Wolves by three touchdowns.

The Skinny

The Etowah Eagles got their first region win last week defeating cross-town rival Woodstock by three touchdowns. It was the usual suspects for the Eagles, as both Xavier Mahoney and the Buffalo, Reece Wehr scored twice route to the victory. We’d be remiss if we did not mention that Last week, Will Zazzara had a big game receiving with two touchdowns. We don’t talk about them much but there is a quartet of receivers for the Eagles that have made timely plays this season including the aforementioned Zazarra, Malone Pesqueira, Mason Mancini and Ethan Weidner. The Eagles are now averaging 27 points per game while the defense is allowing 22.4. Etowah has not lost a game this season when they have scored 25 or more points.

The Allatoona Buccaneers are coming off of their final bye week of the season. The last time out, Allatoona picked up their first region win. While the Bucs have only won two games this season, they still have everything in front of them, as they can conceivably still host a home playoff spot. Allatoona is averaging 22.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 23.7. The Bucs will continue to rely on running back Jayden Ponder, who leads the team with 900 yards rushing and 6-TDs. The Bucs defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times, with Ezra Odinjor leading the way with 9.

These two teams both like to run the ball but in different ways. Expect for Allatoona to line up in the I-formation and really try to punish the Etowah front four. Conversely, the Eagles will try to spread the Allatoona defense out to find running lanes for dual threat quarterback Xavier Mahoney. This game might come down to a defensive stop, and we believe the Bucs are a little ahead of the Eagles there. We like Allatoona by 4.

The Skinny

The Creekview Grizzlies will look to end their two game skid as they host county and region rival Woodstock. The Grizzlies struggled last week to find consistency on offense, so we can almost guaranty that they will look to get back to the basics and establish the run game behind Isaac Hubert. The Grizzlies have been a tale of two teams; at home they are averaging 29.7 points per game. They are averaging 6.5 points on the road. Overall on the season, Creekview 17.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 17.6 points per game.

The Woodstock Wolverines are coming off a game with their highest point output of the season. The Wolverines are still in search of their first win of the season. While they have been eliminated from post season contention, they can still play the role of spoiler as they go on the road to Creekview this week. Woodstock got touchdowns from Sherrod Elly, Drew Burmeister and Adonis Garcia in the loss last week. The story remains the same for Wolverines this week, can they sustain drives long enough to get their defense a rest and can the keep the game close going into the fourth quarter?

We’d like Woodstock’s chances a little better if they were hosting the Grizzlies this week, but that is not the case. For whatever reason, Creekview has been much better at home this week and we expect for that trend to continue. We like the Grizzlies by four touchdowns.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 10 (Part II)

It seems like just yesterday we were in August just getting the season underway, but as we look a the calendar, we are now entering the final quarter of the regular season for Georgia High School Football. Region races continue to get a little clearer. As we do each week, we take a look at some of the more intriguing matchups around the state. This is Part II of our weekly feature, Eight Greats Around the State.

First up, the Grayson Rams will host the Brookwood Broncos. These two teams are part of a trio of teams that are log jammed atop Region 4-7A. The winner will put themselves in prime position to host a state playoff game. Can Bronco’s QB Dylan Lonergan guide the Bronco’s to another victory over the Rams or will Grayson’s defense slow down the Bronco Express? Next, over in Carrollton, the Carrollton Trojans will host the Westlake Lions. Westlake is seemingly the only thing standing between Carrollton and a region title. Can the Lions go on the road and upset the Trojans or will Carrollton’s Juju Lewis and Co. continue to score points in bunches?

Meanwhile, the Marist War Eagles look to be flying high this week as they hope to take another step closer to a region title. North Atlanta will visit Marist this week as the Warriors look to stay in contention for a home playoff game in the state tournament. Will the Warriors team speed give Marist fits, or is this Marist team the real deal? Finally, over in Kennesaw, the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season. They will host the North Cobb Warriors. North Cobb has really been impressive on the ground lately. Can Kennesaw Mountain’s defense step up to the challenge and slow down North Cobb?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Grayson Rams are winners of their last three games and find themselves in a three way tie for first place in Region 4. The Rams are averaging 32.7 points per game. They are averaging 180 yards per game through the air and 145.4 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Jeff Davis has thrown for 1,156 yards and 10-TDs while completing 70.4% of his passes. His top receivers are Caden High (19 receptions, 347 yards, 3-TDs), John Cineas (19 receptions, 285 yards, 1-TD) and Joseph Stone (17 receptions, 289 yards, 4-TDs). Joe Taylor has rushed for a team high 525 yards and 8-TDs. Defensively, Grayson is allowing 11.8 points per game. They have sacked opposing quarterbacks 23 times this season. Jalen Smith leads the Rams defense with 83 total tackles.

The Brookwood Broncos have bounced back from a three-game skid early this season to record a three game win streak of their own. Like, Grayson, the Broncos are part of that three way tie for first place in Region 4. Brookwood is led offensively by quarterback Dylan Lonergan. The senior signal caller has thrown for 1,260 yards and 11-TDs. Lonergan also leads the team in rushing with 321 yards and 4-TDs. Four Bronco receivers have caught at least 20 passes this season including Myles Massengil, Bryce Dopson, Jumal Prothro and Lee Niles. Defensively, Brookwood is led by senior linebacker Malcolm McCain who leads the team in total tackles (76) and sacks (6).

This game could turn into a defensive battle on Friday night. If Grayson is to win, we suspect they will need to have success on the ground with Taylor. If Brookwood is to win, they will need to have solid play from the quarterback. We believe Grayson has the edge at home this week. Rams by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Westlake Lions have jumped back into Class 7A this season and have had a relatively successful season as they jump back into the largest classification in the state. The Lions are winners of their last four games. They are averaging 32.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 15.7 points per game. Westlake is averaging 157.4 yards per game through the air and 136.9 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback R.J. Johnson has thrown for 1,022 yards and 10-TDs. Meanwhile Jae’Den Thomas has rushed for 764 yards and 8-TDs.

The Carrollton Trojans have managed their jump to Class 7A with the same success that they’ve had historically. The Trojans have won their first 8-games and have done it with some prolific offensive numbers. Carrollton is averaging 44.5 points per game this season. Freshman quarterback Julian Lewis has thrown for 2,181 yards and 30-TDs. He’s also completing 68.8% of his passes. Lewis’ top targets include Takare Libscomb (26 receptions, 476 yards, 6-TDs), Caleb Odom (30 receptions, 456 yards, 7-TDs) and running back Bryce Hicks (39 receptions, 380 yards, 5-TDs). Hicks also leads the team in rushing with 867 yards and 10-TDs. The Trojans defense is allowing 12.7 points per game.

It looks like Westlake is the only thing standing in between Carrollton and a region title. The Lions have enough experience on both sides of the ball to keep the game close. However, we don’t believe they can keep the Trojans in check for four quarters. We like Carrolton by 13 on the road.

The Skinny

The Marist War Eagles have won their last three games and are in position to challenge for yet another region title. The War Eagles are replacing a relatively experienced team from a year ago. They seem to be finding their stride at the right time. The War Eagles have used two quarterbacks in their offensive attack, with D.J. Mazzone and Jack Euart. The Ware Eagles also have a duo of versatile tight-ends, in Ripp Perez and Luke Harpring. this season. Marist is averaging 34.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 18.1.

The North Atlanta Warriors stopped a two game skid with their first region win last week. The Warriors still have hopes of hosting a first round playoff game, but they have their work cut out for them this week. Look for the Warriors to try to exploit their advantage with their team speed to help give them the edge this Friday. The Warriors will also use two quarterbacks in Lorenza Lennon and Ian Reynolds. Lennon is a dual threat signal caller who can beat teams with both his arm and his legs. The Warriors are averaging 30.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 14.2.

On paper these teams look relatively similar, at least with regards to their points scored and points allowed. The Marist secondary has been up to the task this season intercepting passes, we believe that will be the difference this week. We like Marist by two touchdowns.

The Skinny

The Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs look to bounce back this week after their potent offense was held to just 14 points last week. The loss also snapped their 6 game win streak. Kennesaw Mountain is averaging 236.3 yards per game through the air and 146.6 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Cayman Prangley has thrown for 1,624 yards and 19-TDs. He’s also added 309 yards per game on the ground with 7-TDs. Tyshon Jenkins leads the team in rushing with 420 yards. Cayden Lee is the teams leading receiver with 53 receptions for 775 yards and 10-TDs. The Mustangs defense has forced 10 turnovers on the season. Hayden McDougal leads the team in total tackles.

The North Cobb Warriors are winners of their last three games. The Warriors have also won two region games, which we believe will be enough to guarantee a playoff spot come November. North Cobb is averaging 26.5 points per game and allowing 15.1. In the last three games, the Warriors are allowing just 9 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Nick Grimstead has filled in nicely for the Warriors during the current win streak. He’s done enough through the air  to keep teams off balance. Grimstead has also had her from running backs Benjamin Hall and David Mbadinga.

This game is a must win for Kennesaw Mountain if they want a shot of a home playoff game. The Mustangs will have to find away to slow down the North Cobb rushing attack. We believe that’s easier said than done. We like the visiting Warriors by 9.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 10 (Part I)

It seems like just yesterday we were in August just getting the 2022 football season underway, but as we look a the calendar, we are now entering the final quarter of the regular season for Georgia High School Football. Region races continue to get a little clearer. As we do each week, we take a look at some of the more intriguing matchups around the state. This is Part I of our weekly feature, Eight Greats Around the State.

First up in Region 5-2A, it looks to be the de facto region title game as Callaway hosts Eagle’s Landing Christian. Both teams have shrugged off slow starts and look to be hitting their stride. Can ELCA keep up the pace offensively, or will Callaway continue their hot streak? Next in Jefferson, it’s another potential region title matchup as the Jefferson Dragons host the Loganville Red Devils. Loganville is off to their best start in school history, but this will certainly be their biggest test of the season. Will it be Jefferson’s Sammy Brown or Loganville’s Solomon Leslie that runs wild this week?

Down in Quitman, two teams that are very familiar with each other will face off for another apparent de facto region title game. Brooks County will host Irwin County. This will be the fifth meeting between these two squads since 2020. Will quarterback Jamal Sanders have an electric performance or will the Irwin County defense wear down Brooks County? Finally, the Sandy Creek Patriots host the Cedar Grove Saints. These are two of the best programs in Class 3-A. We expect the winner to go on to claim the region crown. Does Sandy Creek have enough firepower to match wits with Cedar Grove?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

It’s probably a misnomer to say that the Callaway Cavaliers got off to a slow start. Their first three games resulted in losses at the hands of teams in higher classification and to teams that have been ranked all season in their respective classifications. Since those opening three games, Callaway has won four straight and is seemingly one win away from clinching a playoff berth and another region title. While Callaway is averaging 29 points per game and allowing 19.4 in all of their regular season games; during their four game win streak, the Cavs are averaging 38.5 points per game while allowing 9.2. It looks like playing a challenging non-region title is paying dividends for Coach Wiggins and the Cavs.

The Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (ELCA) Chargers are winners of their last three games. Similar to Callaway, the Chargers are no stranger to scheduling a rigorous non-region slate of games. ELCA has been relatively balanced this season, averaging 181.3 yards per game through the air and 158 yards per game on the ground. Senior quarterback Charlie Gilliam has thrown for 1,249 yards and 14-TDs. Gilliam’s top receivers are Colton Hood (22 receptions, 441 yards, 6-TDs), R.J. Johnson (18 receptions, 195 yards, 1-TD) and the speedy Jacque Holley (14 receptions, 362 yards, 5-TDs). Meanwhile, sophomore running back Gavin Walker has had the hot hand as of late in the backfield. He’s rushed for 325 yards and 1-TD.

We believe this game will certainly play out as the de facto region title game. The Chargers have shown a propensity to put up a lot of points this season, we just don’t believe their offense is as potent as it his been the past few seasons. This game might turn into a defensive battle, when it’s all said and down. We like Callaway by 9 at home.

The Skinny

The Jefferson Dragons enter this week’s matchup on a three game winning streak. The Dragons have only allowed 7 points combined in those last three outings. Jefferson has leaned a little more on the run this season averaging 180.4 yards per game on the ground while passing for 142.9. Junior running back (and linebacker) Sammy Brown paces the offense with 831 yards and 9-TDs on the ground. Brown also has 6 receptions for 80 yards and 1-TD. Quarterback Max Aldridge has thrown for 949 yards and 12-TDs. Zay Minish has emerged as a go to receiver for Aldridge with 11 receptions for 151 yards and 1-TD. The aforementioned Brown also leads the Dragons in total tackles. Jefferson is averaging 29.1 points per game while allowing 13.

The Loganville Red Devils are off to their best start in school history, as the team has never won their first eight games. The Red Devils have relied more on the run this season as they are averaging 228 rushing yards per game while averaging 135 yards per game through the air. Running back Solomon Leslie leads the team with 1,095 yards on the ground and 12-TDs, while fellow senior back Mason Lawson has chipped in 340 yards and 4-TDs. Quarterback Johnny Crowe has thrown for 1,053 yards and 15-TDs. His go to receiver has been Nico Dowdell, who has caught 20 passes for 435 yards and 10-TDs. The Loganville defense is allowing 12.5 points per game. They’ve sacked opposing quarterbacks 17 times. Jason Eligwe leads the Red Devils in total tackles (49) and in sacks (5)

While Jefferson has yet to play Eastside, we believe the winner of this game will go on to secure a home playoff spot and perhaps the region title. Expect each team to focus on establishing the run this Friday night. We won’t sell Loganville short, as we believe the are legit. However, we like Sammy Brown to have a big game. Dragons by 8.

The Skinny

After almost a month of not playing a football game, the Brooks County Trojans got back on the field last Friday night at scored a big win over Class A Division II No. 1 Early County. The win pushed Brooks County to three consecutive wins. The Trojans only loss this season was a four point defeat at the hands of Class AA Cook County. Brooks County is averaging 36.3 points per game while allowing just 19.5. We talked about it last week, but the Trojans offense all starts with dual threat quarterback Jamal Sanders who has game breaking speed to run away from defenders and enough power to run through them.

Since dropping a Week-1 game to Class AA defending champion Fitzgerald, the Irwin County Indians have won five consecutive games. The Indians have a balanced attack on offense, averaging 165.7 yards per game through the air and 184.7 yards per game on the ground. Running back tandem Demarkus Lundy and Shane Marshall have combined to rush for 839 yards and 12-TDs to help pace the offense, while quarterback Cody Soliday has thrown for 991 yards and 9-TDs. The Indians are averaging 37.3 points per game while allowing 11.6.

These two teams are very familiar with each other, as this is the fifth time these teams will have met since the start of the 2020 season. They have played each other in the Class A Finals the previous two seasons, with each team winning once. Irwin County should be able to put up points this week, however, we believe Jamal Sanders might be too tough to handle at home. We like the Trojans by 4.

The Skinny

The Sandy Creek Patriots are winners of their last four games and are looking to claim their first region title since 2013. The Patriots have done something not many teams have done in the past few years, which is defeat Cedar Grove in a region game. Sandy Creek is averaging 171.8 yards per game through the air and 123.5 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Geimere Latimer has thrown for 1,374 yards and 17-TDs while also adding 388 yards rushing and 8-TDs on the ground. The Patriots defense is allowing 15.5 points per game. During their 4-game win streak, the defense is only allowing 9.7 points per game. The Patriots have sacked opposing quarterbacks 22 times this season, with linebacker William Lyles leading the way with 8.

The Cedar Grove Saints are winners of their last two games. The Saints went through a two game losing streak in which they dropped games to two of the top teams in the State’s largest classification. Cedar Grove is looking for the 6th region title in the last 8 years. Defensively, the Saints are allowing 20.5 points per game. Keith Bass and Quinterio Lawson lead the team in total tackles while Adonijah Green leads the team in sacks. Offensively, the Saints are averaging 32.8 points per game. Sophomore quarterback E.J. Colson has thrown for 1,470 yards and 14-TDs. Barry Jackson and Ricky Lee are Colson’s top receivers on the year.

While Cedar Grove still has to play Carver, we believe this game will determine the region champion. We believe Sandy Creek is sneaky good with Latimer at the helm at quarterback. However, it’s hard to pick against the Cedar Grove defense, especially with the schedule they’ve faced to date. We like the Saints by 10 on the road.

TFR – GHSA Football Rankings – Week 9

We are approaching crunch time across the state of Georgia when it comes to region play. As we have come to know, there are always a few upsets each week, and this week was no different. Perhaps the biggest upset was Jones County beating Dutchtown. Other notable upsets were Cambridge defeating Kell and Carver Columbus defeating Crisp County. As we look at each classification, there were no changes in the rankings in Class 6A, 4A and 2A.

Class 7A saw Buford win one of the biggest games of the state this season, as they defeated region foe Mill Creek. As a result of the loss, Mill Creek drops to No. 6. Meanwhile, Walton got a big region win over Kennesaw Mountain. Walton is up to No. 8 this week, while Kennesaw Mountain falls out of the poll. Parkview is back in the Top-10 at No. 10 this week.

There is a new No. 1 in our Class 5A rankings as Ware County lays claim to the No.1 spot. Previous No. 1 Dutchtown was upended by Jones County. The loss drops the Bulldogs down to No. 9. Cambridge also got a big win this week knocking off region rival Kell. The win catapults Cambridge into the rankings for the first time this season at No. 4, while Kell drops from the rankings. The remainder of the poll remains unchanged.

In Class 3A, Sandy Creek defeated Carver-Atlanta in a battle of Top-10 teams. Sandy Creek remains at No. 3 while Carver-Atlanta drops to No. 7. We mentioned earlier that Carver-Columbus defeated previously ranked Crisp County. With the loss Crisp drops from the Top-10 with Carver Columbus replacing them in the rankings at No.10.

In Class A Division-I, Elbert County dropped their region opener to Rabun County. The loss drops Elbert County to No. 10. All of the other teams in the classification were winners.

Finally, in Class A Division-II, the Early County Bobcats lost a big matchup with Brooks County on Friday night. Even with the loss, Early County remains at No. 1 this week. Aquinis dropped a region game this week to Lincoln County. That loss drops Aquinas out of the Top-10. That makes room for Emmanuel County Institute (ECI) to find their way back int o the Top-10.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 9

It’s Week-9 of the Georgia High School Football season and we are in the thick of region play. It’s hard to believe we only have four weeks until the end of the regular season. Five of the six Cherokee County teams are in action this week as River Ridge is off.

The Cherokee Warriors will be back at Tommy Baker Field as they host the Osborne Cardinals. The Warriors have not played at home in over a calendar month. Both Osborne and Cherokee are in desperate need of a region win. Will the resurgent Cardinals get back to their wining ways, or will the Warriors dial up a win this Friday?

Rivalries are the theme in October in Cherokee County and we have two big ones on tap in Region 6-6A. First up is the Battle of Towne Lake, as Woodstock will look to “paint the Towne red”. However, we suspect the Etowah Eagles have plans of their own to earn a playoff birth. A lot is on the line in this game as a loss by either team might just eliminate them from playoff contention. Finally, the Sequoyah Chiefs will host the Creekview Grizzlies. Both teams are smarting after losses last week. Expect for both teams to look to establish the run game and control the line of scrimmage. Will it be another defensive battle this week or will both offenses get back on track?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Cherokee Warriors lost a tough region opener last week to the Wheeler Wildcats. Cherokee will look to bounce back this week as they are back home at Tommy Baker Field. The Warriors are still looking for stability in the backfield as both Christian Irwin and Malachi Echols have been sharing carries this season. Meanwhile quarterback Tanner Savasir has thrown for 980 yards and 9-TDs. Jace Jones and Kaden “Pops” Jameson have combined to catch 42 passes for 476 yards and 3-TDs. The Warriors are averaging 17.6 points per game, but the defense is allowing 28.5. Cherokee’s defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 20 times this season, with Kyan Simmons leading the way with a team high8-sacks. Simmons is second on the team in total tackles while junior linebacker Chase Montgomery leads the team with 57 total tackles. The challenge doesn’t get any easier this week as the Warriors will need to find a way to slow down a resurgent Osborne Cardinal team.

The Osborne Cardinals are off to their best start since 1994 when they went 9-2 and won their first 8 games of the season. Last week, the Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season to Top-10 and region foe, Kennesaw Mountain. Even after being shut out last week, the Cardinals are averaging 41.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 15.1. Through his first five games, quarterback Deuce Burr has thrown for almost 1,100 yards and 15-TDs. Meanwhile Khalif Walters has been a workhouse on the ground with 676 rushing yards in his first five games and was leading the team in receiving yards in that same time span.

Both Cherokee and Osborne will be fighting for their playoff lives as it’s tough sledding from here on out for both of these teams. The Warriors will need to shore up their run defense this week if they are going to get their first region win. We expect this game to come down to the wire, but we like the Warriors by a field goal.

The Skinny

The Woodstock Wolverines will be back at home after a tough game last week at Allatoona. The Wolverines were able to muster 156  yards of offense, but were only able to find pay-dirt once. (That is just under their average of 159.8 yards per game going into last week’s game.) On the season, Woodstock is now averaging 6.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 49.7. Woodstock’s offense has gone through fits and starts this season and we believe they will look to once again get the ground game going this week.

The Etowah Eagles were off last week. They will be looking for their first region win of the season and also looking to stop their two game skid. Etowah will look to get dual threat quarterback Xavier Mahoney going again. He found success in his last outing with his elusive speed, combined with some tough running in between the tackles by the buffalo, Reece Wehr. Perhaps a unit that doesn’t get enough credit for Etowah is their secondary. Last time out, Jamir Maxime and Frank Mosley were very effective in defending against the deep ball; absolutely blanketing the Creekview receivers and taking away the deep threats. Etowah’s offense is averaging 24.5 points per game, while the defense is allowing 22.6.

We expect both teams to be focused in this rivalry game. Etowah seems to be the clear favorite, but don’t think that Woodstock will just lay down. The Battle of Towne Lake is a big rivalry and we expect Woodstock to play their most inspired ball of the season this week. Even with that said, we believe Etowah has too many weapons on offense. We like the Eagles by 19.

The Skinny

The Sequoyah Chiefs will come back home to Hickory Flat after a tough road game last week. The Chiefs were unable to get much offense going last week against Rome. On the season, Sequoyah is averaging 14.7 points per game and allowing 27.2. Going into last week Sequoyah was averaging 122.4 yards per game on the ground. The ground game will look back to get back on track this week with running backs Jackson Hancock and Tyler Bell. The defense will also look to get back on track as well this week. Prior to the game against Rome, they had held their last three opponents to just 9.3 points per game.

The Creekview Grizzlies are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to county and region rival River Ridge. The loss drops the Grizzlies into a three way tie for second place with Sequoyah and River Ridge. Last week, the Grizzlies ground game was held in check as Isaac Hubert’s string of 100 yard rushing games came to an end. However, quarterback Austin Guest was efficient through the air finding receivers Jackson Stanley, Cal Shubert and Camden Lusk running open against River Ridge’s man to man defense in the secondary.  The Grizzlies are averaging 19.2 points per game and allowing 19.1.

Perhaps a little of the luster was taken from this game with both team’s dropping a game last week, but we don’t believe it makes this week’s matchup any less crucial. The winner stays in contention for a home playoff spot. We expect this game to be closer than those in recent years. Expect a bounce back game for Sequoyah’s defense. However, we think the Grizzly’s balanced offense will be the difference here. Creekview by 4.
