Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 9 (Part II)

Week-9 of the high school football season in Georgia is upon us. Region races are starting to take shape as team continue to jockey for playoff position. This is our weekly feature of eight of the more intriguing matchups this week around the State.

First up, the South Atlanta Hornets host the North Cobb Christian Eagles. This game is shaping up to be the de facto region title game, barring any upsets in the last three weeks of the regular season. Will North Cobb be able to slow down South Atlanta’s Keyjuan Brown or will the Hornets continue to roll? Next up, we stay in Atlanta as Carver (Atlanta) will host the Sandy Creek Patriots. The Patriots are looking to avenge last season’s loss to Carver. Can quarterback Germier Latimer lead Sandy Creek to their 4th straight win this season or will it by Carver’s Bryce Bowens keeping the Panthers on top?

In another de facto region title game, the Buford Wolves will host the Mill Creek Hawks. Both teams have been steady all season. Will Justice Haynes and Dylan Witke lead Buford to another victory or will it be Caleb Downs and Hayden Clark guiding Mill Creek to another big win? Finally, in Kennesaw, the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs will host the Walton Raiders. This game will go a long way in determining who might host a home playoff game. Mustangs quarterback Caymen Prangley has put up some big numbers this season. Will he be able to out-duel Walton quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski this week?

The Skinny

The South Atlanta Hornets are ranked No. 1 in our rankings for the first time ever. The Hornets are winners of their last 15 regular season games. Their offense is averaging 45.5 points per game. They are churning out 435 yards per game on offense, with the vast majority of that coming by way of the ground. Keyjuan Brown leads the team with 1,381 yards on the ground with 15-TDs. The Hornets don’t throw it all that much, averaging about 7 pass attempts per game. However, when they do, Steven Moore has been the top target with 13 receptions for 230 yards and 3-TDs. Defensively, the Hornets are allowing 15.5 points per game. They’ve sacked opposing quarterbacks 14 times, with Javonte Stuckey leading the way with 6.

The North Cobb Christian Eagles have quietly put together an undefeated season. The Eagles are averaging 31.1 points per game. Similar to their opponent, North Cobb Christian is getting most of their offense from the ground game. Running back Jadin Coates leads the team in rushing with 516 yards and 3-TDs. Trey Priester has also chipped in 290 yards and 6-TDs. While the Eagles don’t throw it a lot, they do have a big target in Jacob Cruz. He leads the team in receptions and on defense, he leads the team in total tackles and is tied for the team lead in interceptions (2). North Cobb Christian is allowing 8.7 points per game.

By all of our accounts, we expect for the winner of this game to be the leader in the clubhouse to claim the region crown. We expect for South Atlanta’s Brown to have another big night running the football. North Cobb Christian keeps it close for a half, but we like the Hornets by 13.

The Skinny

The Carver Panthers begin their quest for their first region title since 2017 this Friday night. Carver has been impressive this season, with their only loss coming at the hands of Class 7A Buford. Carver is averaging 23.6 points per game this season. It has been a relatively balanced attack for the Panthers. Through their first five games, they are averaging 170.3 yards per game through the air and 140.2 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Bryce Bowens has thrown for 1,153 yards and 9-TDs and has not thrown an interception this season. His top targets have been Deandre Buchannon and Zyee’k Mender. In their first five games, the duo has combined to catch 46 passes for 790 yards and 8-TDs. Defensively, Carver is allowing 18.8 points per game. They’ve also sacked opposing quarterback 18 times this season.

The Sandy Creek Patriots will be looking to claim their first region title since 2013. The Patriots are winners of their last three games and their only loss this season was to Class 7A East Coweta in overtime. The Patriots are averaging 35.2 points per game this season. Quarterback Geimere Latimer has thrown for 1,202 yards and 15-TDs. He’s also second on the team in rushing with 326 yards and 7-TDs. Latimer’s top two receivers are Kaleb Cost, (19 receptions, 366 yards, 4-TDs) and Cameron Watts, (14 receptions, 299 yards, 4-TDs.) Defensively, the Patriots are allowing 16 points per game. The defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 16 times, led by linebacker William Lyles with 7.

There is a lot last stake in this matchup. The winner of this game is almost certain to host a home playoff game. Sandy Creek has not defeated Carver in two tries. Both defenses have been stingy, but we believe the Patriots are a little better on offense this season. We believe that is the difference this week. Sandy Creek by 4.

The Skinny

The Buford Wolves continued their mastery of region play their last time out as they defeated Collins Hill back on September 30th. The Wolves have won 13 consecutive region games and have not lost to a team from the State of Georgia since the beginning of the 2021 season. They’ve also won 17 consecutive games entering this week. Buford is averaging 32.6 points per game on offensive. Justice Haynes leads the Wolves rushing attack with 751 yards on the ground. Meanwhile the defense is allowing just 7.8 points per game. They’ve allowed no more than 16 points in a game this season and are on par with their impressive defensive performance last season. Expect linemen Eddrick Houston and Alaijah Williams to make it tough sledding the rest of the way for opposing offenses.

The Mill Creek Hawks come into this game flying high. They are averaging 46.5 points per game on offense. Quarterback Hayden Clark has thrown for 1,139 yards and 9-TDs and has not been intercepted this season. Makhail Wood and two-way star Caleb Downs have been his top targets, combining for 45 receptions for 702 yards and 5-TDs. Cam Robinson has lead the way on the ground for the Hawks with 716 yards and 9-TDs. Defensively, Mill Creek is allowing 19.6 points per game. The aforementioned Downs leads the team with 3 interceptions.

With all due respect to the other teams in Region 8-7A, this is the region title game. Mill Creek has been explosive on offense this season and with Downs being able to help patrol the secondary, it’s made it tough for team’s to be effective through the air. However, this Buford defense has been special. We believe it will be a battle of attrition on offense, but we like the Wolves at home by 4.

The Skinny

The Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs continued to roll last week with a big victory over previously undefeated Osborne. The Mustangs have now won 9 consecutive regular season games dating back to last year. They have put up 257.8 yards per game through the air and 157.3 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Cayman Prangley has thrown for over 1,500 yards and 18-TDs. He’s also second on the team in rushing with 277 yards and 6-TDs. Prangley’s top receivers this season have been Cayden Lee (48 receptions, 729 yards, 10-TDs) and Jailen Taylor (23 receptions, 438 yards, 3-TDs). The Mustangs are averaging 43.6 points per game. Defensively, they are allowing 17.3 points per game and have intercepted 8 passes in the secondary. Junior safety Michael Bell leads the team with 4 interceptions.

The Walton Raiders come in to this week looking to get back on track after they were ambushed on the road at North Cobb. The Raiders are still in contention for a home playoff game, but will need a win this week to keep those hopes alive. Walton is averaging 35.1 points per game this season. Quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has thrown for 1,912 yards and 19-TDs. His top receivers are Hunter Teal and Cam Lloyd who have combined to catch 52 passes for 958 yards and 9-TDs. Defensively, Walton is allowing 27.6 points per game. Ashton Woods and Matthew Traynor are tops on the team in total tackles with 69 and 62 respectively.

We have a suspicion that this game will be a track meet. Both of these offenses love to let it fly and they have the quarterbacks that make that possible. Walton’s defense will have to shore things up quickly to slow down Kennesaw Mountain. We believe it’s close, by we like the home team Mustangs by 3.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 9 (Part I)

Week-9 of the high school football season in Georgia is upon us. Region races are starting to take shape as team continue to jockey for playoff position. This is our weekly feature of eight of the more intriguing matchups this week around the State of Georgia

First up, down in Jesup, the Wayne County Yellow Jackets host the New Hampstead Hornets. Both teams are off to a hot start this season and while we wouldn’t say these teams will challenge for a region title, this game will play a big role in playoff seeding and who may get to host a playoff game. Next up in East Cobb, the Kell Longhorns will host the Cambridge Bears. As with other regions across the state, this game is shaping up to be the de facto region title game. Kell is the traditional power in this region, but Cambridge has put together a nice string of seasons under the last few years. Can the Bears get over the hump and defeat Kell to propel them to their first region crown in school history?

Down in Blakely, the Early County Bobcats have already wrapped up the Class A Division II Region 1 crown. Now they will host one of the top team’s in Class A Division I as Brooks County comes calling. Can the Bobcats find a way to slow down the electric Jamal Sanders or will Brooks County leave Blakely with their 13th consecutive win in this series? Finally, over in Elberton, the Elbert County Blue Devils will host the Rabun County Wildcats. Rabun County sports one of the top receivers in the state in Jaden Gibson. Will the Wildcats arial assault continue to pay dividends or will it be Quan Moss and the Blue Devils ground game that finally derail Rabun?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Wayne County Yellow Jackets are winners of their last four games. They find themselves ranked in most polls in the state and area averaging 27.8 points per game. Offensively, the Jackets have leaned heavily on the ground, averaging 203.2 yards per game. Matthew Fuller leads the team with 761 yards and 12-TDs. As a team, Wayne County has rushed for over 1,200 yards. Terrione Graves leads the team in receiving with 16 receptions for 213 yards, and 2-TDs. Defensively, Wayne County is allowing 13.1 points per game.

The New Hampstead Phoenix are off to another 5-1 start. They are averaging 36.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 15.6. The Phoenix are averaging 210.2 yards per game through the air and 162 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Pauly Seeley has thrown for 1,031 yards and 15-TDs on the year. There are five Phoenix receivers with over 10 receptions on the season. Jalen Hampton leads the team in receiving yards (262) while running back Kaleb Smith leads the team in total receptions (22) and Malachi Lonnon leads the team in receiving TDs (5).

Even though neither of these teams are not the favorite to win the region, this game will have big implications on playoff seedings. Wayne County will look to establish the rushing attack to keep New Hampstead at bay. This is a game that should come down to the wire We like the Yellow Jackets at home by 6.

The Skinny

The Kell Longhorns are off to their best start since 2013 and are looking to claim their first region crown since 2014. The Longhorns offense is off to a hot start, averaging 38 points per game while the defense is allowing 16.1 per game. Quarterback Bryce Clavon has thrown for 1,422 yards and 14-TDs and also leads the team in rushing with 493 yards and 9-TDs. Clavon’s top receivers are Peyton Zachary and Davion Hampton. The two have combined to catch 48 passes for 671 yards and  7-TDs. At least thirteen different Longhorns have caught passes this season. Defensively, Joshua Barker leads the team in total tackles and sacks. He’s collected a whopping 10.5 sacks already this season.

The Cambridge Bears are looking to build off of their recent success over the past few years as they aim to win their first region football crown in school history. The Bears are averaging 139.4 yards per game through the air and 198.1 yards per game on the ground. Christian Isabor is the team’s leading rusher with 831 yards. He runs behind a very steady offensive line anchored by Cameron Phillips, Gabe Chigwere and sophomore Gabe Smith. Meanwhile first year starter at quarterback Preston Clemmer has thrown for 976 yards and 12-TDs. The Bears area averaging 36.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 17.3 points per game.

The Bears might be flying under many teams radars, but all of Class 5A should take not if they haven’t already. Cambridge is a legitimate threat with their ability to run the ball. While we’ve focused on offense, this game will come down to defense. We believe Kell has a slight edge there. We like the Longhorns at home by 4.

The Skinny

The Early County Bobcats are off to their best season since 2003. The Bobcats have already clinched the Region 1 Division II title. They will close the season with three non region opponents. Early is averaging 30.2 points per game while the defense is allowing just 8.1 points per game. The Bobcats have not played a team outside of their classification this season. They will rely heavily on the run, as they are averaging 248.9 yards per game on the ground. It has been Charles Williams and Jeremiah Hutchinson leading the way for the Bobcats. As a team, Early County has rushed for 1,742 yards.

The Brooks County Trojans will play their first game in almost a month when they travel to Blakely this Friday. The Trojans only loss thus far came at the hands of Class AA Cook. The Trojans are averaging 36.8 points per game on the season, while the defense is allowing 18.8 points per game. The Trojans offense is led by dual threat quarterback Jamal Sanders who really makes the Trojans go. He’s just as dangerous throwing as he is running.

We suspect the Trojans will be chomping at the bit to get back on the field on Friday night. While they might be a tad bit rusty from the long layoff, we expect Sanders and the Brooks County offense to be back to their old tricks. Early County looks overmatched this week. We like the Trojans by 17.

The Skinny

The Elbert County Blue Devils will begin their quest for their first region title since 2013. The last time Elbert started off 7-0 was in 2011. The Blue Devils are averaging 32.8 points per game so far this season. The offense is averaging 165.1 yards per game through the air and 226.7 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Jayvyn Hickman has thrown for 1,030 yards and 9-TDs. Receivers Trustin Allen and Ty’Rikis Jones have been steady for the Blue Devils all season long. They lead the team in receiving. Meanwhile, Quan Moss has rushed for 1,170 yards and 15-TDs to lead the team on the ground. The Blue Devils are holding teams to 19.5 points per game.

The Rabun County Wildcats begin their quest for their 9th consecutive region title this Friday night. The Wildcats have won 16 consecutive games entering this week. Rabun County has done most of their work on offense through the air, averaging 301.1 passing yards per game, while the offense is only averaging 91.6 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Keegan Stover has already thrown for 2,034 yards and 23 TDs, he has not been intercepted yet this season in 192 pass attempts. Jaden Gibson has been his primary target, catching 60 passes for 1,078 yards and 15-TDs. While the Wildcats don’t run the ball much, Lang Windham has rushed for 479 yards and 5-TDs. Defensively, Rabun County has allowed 14.7 points per game.

The winner of this game will have an inside track to the region title. (While both teams still have to face Commerce.) Rabun County certainly has the firepower to outscore Elbert County. However, we believe that Quan Moss can help keep the explosive Wildcats on the sidelines. We like Elbert County in a mild upset. Blue Devils by 2.

TFR – GHSA Football Rankings – Week 8

Week-8 is in the books and once again we were treated to some great action across the state of Georgia. As with most weeks this season, there were some big surprises, but perhaps none bigger than in Class 5A as Calhoun, who is one week removed from knocking off Cartersville, themselves fell victim to upset minded Hiram. Here is a look at our take on the Top-10 teams in each classification.

In Class 7A, one of the biggest surprises was not that North Cobb beat Walton, but how they did. The loss drops Walton all the way to No. 9 while North Cobb is up to No. 8 this week. Lambert makes their debut in the rankings at No. 10 this week as they are undefeated through six games this season.

Over in Class 6A, the Top-7 teams remain unchanged. Previous No. 8 Northside (Warner Robins) fell to Houston County, dropping Northside from the rankings. That loss made room for South Paulding, who is back in the Top-10 this week at No. 10.

We’ve already mention the big upset in Class 5A, the loss by Calhoun drops the Yellow Jackets to No. 8 this week. This could be the most wide open classification in the state as we believe there are 7 or 8 teams that could claim the state title this season.

Meanwhile, in Class 4A, the Top-5 remained unchanged. Burke County drops from the rankings after their loss to Benedictine. That made room for the Stephenson Jaguars who make their debut in our Top-10 this week. Trinity Christian got a big win over region foe Whitewater which moves the Lions up two spots to No. 8.

Like the other classifications, Class 3-A saw the shuffling amongst the bottom half of the rankings. Hebron Christian lost to Monroe-Area by 34; that loss drops Hebron out of the Top-10. That made room for Thomasville who makes their debut in the rankings this week. Thomasville is in at No. 10.

We have a new No. 1 team in Class 2A. The South Atlanta Hornets are atop the poll for the first time this season. Previous No. 1 Pierce County lost on Monday to South Georgia rival Appling County dropping them to No. 4. There were no other changes in Class 2A.

There were some interesting results in Class A Division I. The Top-6 was unchanged, however there was shake up at the bottom as Dublin upset Bleckley County. The win by the Irish has them ranked for the first time this season. While Dublin is in at No. 8, the Commerce Tigers also scored a big win over Social Circle. That victory propelled the Tigers into the ranking at No. 9. We mentioned Bleckley County’s loss to Dublin. That drops them to No. 10 this week.

Finally down in Class A Division II, previously ranked No. 5 Washington-Wilkes fell to unranked Lincoln County. That loss drops the Tigers from the rankings this week. That loss made room for the Manchester Blue Devils who come in at No. 10.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 8

As we enter Week-8 of the high school football season in Cherokee County, region races are stating to heat up. This week five of the six county teams are in action as Etowah has a bye. Three of the county teams will be on the road out of county this week.

First up, Cherokee heads down to Holt Road to take on the Wheeler Wildcats. After two bye weeks, will Cherokee’s offensive line be able to set the tone for the offense or will Wheeler’s Josiah Allen run wild this week? Next, in Acworth, the Woodstock Wolverines will pay a visit to face the Allatoona Buccaneers. Both teams are looking to stay in playoff contention, can Woodstock find a way to slow down Allatoona’s run heavy offense?

The Sequoyah Chiefs will log the most miles this week as they head over to Rome. The Chiefs defense has been impressive the last three outings, however Rome is a different animal. Can the Chiefs tame the big bad Wolves? Finally down in Woodstock, the River Ridge Knights will host the Creekview Grizzlies. River Ridge is playing their first home game in over a month. Can the Knights get back on track or will the Grizzlies stay hot?

The Skinny

The Wheeler Wildcats have won three straight games and will look to make it four games and pick up a region win in the process. Wheeler’s offense is paced by running back Josiah Allen. He rushed for 765 yards and 9-TDs. Allen is a physical back who is tough to bring down and doe this best work in between the tackles. Wheeler is averaging 83.2 yards per game through the air and 234 yards per game on the ground. Their offense is averaging 20 points per game while the defense is allowing 14.

The Cherokee Warriors are coming off of a double bye week. The Warriors will be looking to stop their current two game skid. Cherokee is averaging 171.2 yards per game through the air, while rushing for 63.2 yards per game on the ground. That’s a stark contract from their opposition this week. Quarterback Tanner Savasir has thrown for 856 yards and 8-TDs. His top receivers have been Kaden “Pops” Jameson and Jayce Jones. They’ve combined for 36 receptions for 426 yards and 3-TDs.

Cherokee will face another team that relies heavily on the run. They will have to figure out a way to slow down Allen or otherwise it will be a long night. Conversely, they’ll need to establish their own rushing attack. We expect this to be a low scoring game, we like the Warriors in a gut check game. Cherokee by 5.

The Skinny

The Allatoona Buccaneers come out of the bye week with a home game. The Bucs find themselves at the bottom of the region standings this week, which is not something they are used to seeing. Allatoona continues to rely heavily on the ground game as we can expect for them to feed Woodstock a steady diet of Jayden Ponder on Friday night. Turnovers have plagued Allatoona’s offense. They will need to contain to improve on ball security. Allatoona is averaging 19 points per game, while the defense is allowing 26.5.

The Woodstock Wolverines will be on the road this week as they well be looking to keep their playoff hopes alive. Woodstock’s offense is averaging 6 points per game while the defense is allowing 51.1 points per game. Wide receiver Adonis Garcia had one of his better outings last week as he caught six passes for 72 yards. Garcia leads the team in receiving with 22 receptions for 203 yards. Drew Burmeister, Carson Gray and Evan McKellar continue to lead the Wolverines in total tackles.

Expect for Allatoona to go back to the ground to this week against Woodstock. The story for Woodstock doesn’t change; they will need to continue to find small victories and keep themselves in games late. We believe the Wolverines will be more competitive this week, but we like the Bucs by 3-TDs.

The Skinny

The Rome Wolves racked up 342 yards of offense last week in a big win over Woodstock. The Wolves forced five turnovers en route to their second region win of the season. The 70 points that Rome scored were the most points they have put up in a game since 1996. Rome is averaging 35.5 points per game on offense while the defense is allowing just 12.6. The Wolves have won three straight games and recorded their second shutout of the season last week.

The Sequoyah Chiefs have now reeled off three straight wins and are in a tie for first place in the region. Offensively, Sequoyah is averaging 17.1 points per game. Jackson Hancock has done a little bit of everything for the Chiefs, he leads the team in rushing with 365 yards and 4-TDs and also leads them in receiving with 11 receptions for 231 yards and 2-TDs. The Sequoyah Chiefs defense continues to impress during this three game stretch, as they are holding the opposition to just 9.3 points per game. Overall, the Chiefs are allowing 23.1 points per game.

If Sequoyah is going to pull off what seems to be an upset, they will need a big game from their defensive ends, Ty Moores and Ean Marria. They’ve been trouble for opposing defenses the last few games. Meanwhile, expect Rome to attempt to assert themselves as the more physical team. Sequoyah should keep it close for a half, but we like Rome to pull away late. Wolves by 13.

The Skinny

The River Ridge Knights will be looking to bounce back from their first loss in region play. The Knights offense was held to just a touchdown in last week’s game. Despite the 7 points they scored last week, River Ridge is still averaging 29.8 points per game. Through the first five games of the season, Quarterback Ethan Spector has thrown for 958 yards and 8 – TDs. Twelve different Knight receivers have caught at least one pass this season. Meanwhile, during that same five game stretch, Isaiah Coughlan and Camden Cox have combined for 468 yards rushing and 10-TDs. The River Ridge defense is allowing 18.3 points per game and prior to last week’s game had sacked opposing quarterbacks 9 times.

The Creekview Grizzlies got a big win lost week as they downed Etowah and took a step closer to securing a playoff spot. Sophomore quarterback Austin Guest has now thrown for over 1,000 yards on the season and is completing 60% of his passes. Isaac Hubert went over the century mark for the third straight game as he is now at 493 yards and 8-TDs. Cal Shubert and Camden Lusk have combined to catch 41 passes for 605 yards and 2-TDs. The offense is averaging 20.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 19 points per game.

We expect a more inspired performance this week from River Ridge. They are a talented team. We believe they will put more points on the board Friday night. For Creekview, can the Grizzlies remain focused and not get ambushed by the Knights. We like Creekview by 3.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 8 (Part II)

We turn the calendar to October and while the weather in most of the state is cooling down, the action in region play is heating up. In most areas of the state, region play is well under way. This is Part II of our weekly GHSA Football Previews we call Eight Greats Around the state, as we look at some of the more intriguing matchups in Georgia High School Football.

First up, we head to the North Georgia mountains as the Gilmer County Bobcats host the Lumpkin County Indians. While neither team is ranked, both of these mountain schools are off to their best start in several years. Will it be the Gilmer ground game running wild again or will Lumpkin County win and keep pace in region play? Meanwhile, at the other end of the state down in Savannah, the Benedictine Cadets will host the Burke County Bears. The Bears are red hot, but can their quarterback, Marshall Flowers out-duel Benedctine’s Luke Krohmenhoek?

Next up, in Acworth, the North Cobb Warriors will host the Walton Raiders. These two teams were our preseason favorites to battle it out for the region 5-7A crown. Can North Cobb continue to work their magic on the ground or will the high powered Walton offense stay on track? Finally, down in Valdosta, it’s the “Winnersville Classic” as Lowndes will host rival Valdosta. Both teams feature two talented sophomore quarterbacks. Will Lowndes continue their upward trajectory or will Valdosta exact a measure of revenge from last season?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Gilmer County Bobcats are off to their best start since 2014. The Bobcats are averaging 32.8 points per game and allowing 16.3. Gilmer is doing all of their damage on the ground offensively, averaging 255.3 yards per game rushing while just 22 yards per game passing. They’ve only attempted 10 passes this season. Hunter Watkins has been the bellcow for the rushing attack with a team high 563 yards and 7-TDs on the season. Will Kiker (271 yards, 7-TDs) and Brock Titus (265 yards, 3-TDs) have also been key contributors to the Gilmer rushing attack.

The Lumpkin County Indians had their undefeated season derailed last week as they lost for the first time. Even with the loss, the Indians are off to their best start since 2000. The Indians area a little more balanced on offense, averaging 170.2 yards per game through the air and 195.3 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Cooper Scott has thrown for 929 yards and 8-TDs, while completing 72% of his passes. His top receiver has been sophomore Cal Faulkner, who’s caught 24 passes for 418 yards and 6-TDs. Meanwhile, Mason Sullens leads the team in rushing with 612 yards and 10-TDs.

Both Gilmer and Lumpkin are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The big question in this game is whether or not Lumpkin can slow down Gilmer’s Wing-T option attack. It’s possible, but Gilmer has been clicking on all cylinders for most of the season. We like the Bobcats by 9.

The Skinny

The Benedictine Cadets had their game last Friday postponed, so this week’s game will serve as their region opener. The Cadets got a big win their last time out over Bolles of Jacksonville. On the season, Benedictine is averaging 24.8 points per game. They are paced by junior quarterback, Luke Krojmenhoek, who has passed for 859 yards and 8-TDs. Na’Seir Samuel leads the Cadets in rushing with 313 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Za’Quan Bryan and Thomas Blacksher have been the go to receivers, as they’ve combined to catch 39 passes for 529 yards and 6-TDs. Benedictine is allowing 12.4 points per game this season.

The Burke County Bears are off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2017. The Bears are averaging 33 points per game while the defense is allowing 19.6. Burke County has a balanced attack, averaging 167.2 yards per game through the air and 168.6 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Marshall Flowers has thrown for 836 yards and 8-TDs while Charlie Dorsey leads the team in rushing with 350 yards and 3-TDs. Linebacker Brandon Lively leads the team with 54 total tackles and six tackles for loss.

This is a tough region opener matchup for both teams. Our biggest question is whether or not the Burke County secondary can contain Benedictine’s talented duo at wide receiver. We believe it’s possible, but not probable. Benedictine by 8.

The Skinny

The North Cobb Warriors are coming off of a bye week, as their last time out they scored a big win over the Milton Eagles. North Cobb has been playing without their star quarterback Malachi Singleton who has been sidelined with an injury for three games now. The Warriors are averaging 21.6 points per game and allowing 17.2. Without Singleton available, we can expect for North Cobb to continue to rely on their ground game, which rushed for almost 400 yards in their last game. Ben Hall and David Mbadinga should play a huge role in the offensive scheme this week.

The Walton Raiders are coming off of a thrilling 2 point victory over North Paulding last week. The Raiders have not scored less than 30 points in a game this season. They are averaging 41 points per game and allowing 26.6. The Raiders are averaging over 500 yards of total offense this season. Quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has thrown for over 1,700 yards and 18-TDs, completing 70% of his passes. Meanwhile, Makari Bodiford paces the Raiders with 606 yards on the ground and 7-TDs. The Walton defense has forced 10 turnovers on the season.

The biggest question in this game will be whether North Cobb’s ground game can really drain the clock and limit the amount of times Walton’s potent offense will have the ball. We believe North Cobb will do enough to hang around, but we like Walton by a touchdown on the road.

The Skinny

The Lowndes Vikings put the state on notice their last time out as they defeated the Grayson Rams after a slow start to the season. Lowndes has a balanced attack so far this season, averaging 141.4 yards through the air and 146.8 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Marvis Parrish leads the team in passing (707 yards, 4-TDs) and in rushing (281 yards, 9-TDs). The teams top three receivers are Kevis Thomas, Aalim Brown and Keylan Hicks. The trio has combined to catch 38 passes for 477 yards and 2-TDs. Lowndes is averaging 30.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 23.8. The Vikings have sacked opposing quarterbacks 21 times this season.

The Valdosta Wildcats are 6-0 for the first time since 2014. It has certainly been a turnaround season for the ‘Cats as they only won 4 games all of last season. Offensively, Valdosta is averaging 89.8 yards per game through the air and 200 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Todd Robinson leads the Cats in passing, (462 yards, 7-TDs) and in rushing, (346 yards, 5-TDs). Charles Williams, Jr. and Ahmad Denson have combined to rush for 570 yards and 5-TDs. Valdosta’s defense is allowing 4.8 points per game. They have recorded two shutouts already and have sacked opposing quarterbacks 22 times, with Eric Brantley accounting for a team high 7-sacks.

This game features two sophomore quarterbacks who are both dual threat players. We believe this one comes down to defense, and while Valdosta’s defense has been the most impressive, we believe Lowndes might be a little more battle tested. We like the Vikings by 2.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 8 (Part I)

We turn the calendar to October and while the weather in most of the state is cooling down, the action in region play is heating up. In most areas of the state, region play is well under way. This week we take a look at some of the more intriguing matchups in what we like to call Eight Greats Around the State.

We start in Northwest Georgia as the Heritage Generals host the Cedartown Bulldogs. Both teams rely heavily on the ground game. Will the Generals shock Region 7 or will Cedartown continue to roll? Over in Mableton, Whitefield Academy will host the Elbert County Bulldogs. This is a big non-region matchup between two of the top teams in Class A-Division I. Can the Elbert defense find a way to slow down Whitefield’s dual purpose QB?

Next up we go down to Sylvester, as the undefeated Worth County Rams host the defending 2A state champs, Fitzgerald. This is a brutal region and neither team can afford to falter in the early going. Are the Rams for real or will Fitzgerald’s ground game control things in this matchup? Finally, in Fayetteville, the Whitewater Wildcats host the Trinity Christian Lions. The Lions are coming off of a defensive victory over Starr’s Mill. Will their defense be able to slow down Whitewater’s ground attack?

The Skinny

The Heritage Generals are off to their best star since 2017. The Generals are averaging 40 points per game this season. Offensively, they are averaging 98.2 yards per game through the air and 204.8 yards per game on the ground. Running back Paxton McCrary leads the Generals in rushing with 599 yards and 8-TDs. Quarterback Kaden Swope has thrown for 477 yards and 8-TDs and is also second on the team in rushing with 269 yards and 6-TDs. Swope’s top receivers are Tyler Cheatwood and Max Owens. They have combined to catch 16 passes for 403 yards and 6-TDs. The Generals defense is allowing 9.8 points per game. They’ve also sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times and have intercepted 11 passes. The aforementioned Owens leads the secondary with 5 of those 11 interceptions.

The Cedartown Bulldogs have now won eleven straight regular season games and are off to their best start since 2013. The Bulldogs are averaging 35.3 points per game. The vast majority of the offensive production comes by way of the ground game as they are averaging 305.8 per game rushing. Harlem Diamond and Patrick Gardner have received the lion’s share of the carries with Diamond rushing for 507 yards and 8-TDs while Gardner has rushed for 477 yards and 10-TDs. Diamond also leads the team in receiving with 7 catches for 129 yards and 3-TDs. Defensively, Cedartown is allowing 7.3 points per game. Linebacker Eli Barrow continues to lead the team in total tackles (81) and sacks (8).

This might be one of the fastest played games this week as both teams lean on the running attack. Heritage is a formidable opponent and probably has the best shot in region play to knock off Cedartown. We just believe that Cedartown’s Diamond and Gardner are too much to handle this week. Bulldogs by 14.

The Skinny

The Whitefield Academy Wolfpack will be back at home after two straight road games. The Wolfpack got back in the win category with a win over Brookstone last week. They are averaging 137.2 yards per game through the air and 216.7 yards per game on the ground. Dual threat quarterback Ayden Duncanson leads the team in passing (782 yards, 12-TDs) and rushing (672 yards, 8-TDs). His top targets have been Ian Weihe and Caleb LaVellee as the duo has combined to catch 25 passes for 372 yards and 3-TDs. Defensively, Lavellee has already recorded 67 solo tackles, while the secondary has intercepted 10 passes.

The Elbert County Blue Devils are off to their best start since 2011. The Blue Devils have been scoring points in bunches, averaging 32.5 points per game while allowing 13.6. Elbert hasn’t just been a one-trick pony, as they are averaging 164.7 yards per game through the air and 232.8 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Jayvyn Hickman has thrown for 862 yards and 7-TDs. The focal point of the offense however has to be Quan Moss, who leads the team in rushing with 980 yards and 12-TDs. Defensively, Elbert County has sacked opposing quarterbacks 17 times, with D.J. Raiford accounting for 9 of them.

Elbert County will have to travel halfway across the state to take on Whitefield. If they bring their defense with them and can corral Whitefield’s Duncanson, we like their chances. We believe this has the makings of a low scoring game. We like Elbert by 4.

The Skinny

The Worth County Rams are 6-0 for the first time since 1989. The Rams also look to be in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Worth County is averaging 38.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 24 points per game. They are averaging 203.3 yards per game through the air and 164.2 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Chip Cooper has thrown for 1,223 yards and 14-TDs and has not been intercepted at all this season. His top targets are Parker Weaver (32 receptions, 376 yard, 6-TDs) and D’ontae Fulton (29 receptions, 401 yards, 6-TDs). Freshmen running back Kaden Chester leads the team in rushing with 520 yards.

The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes are looking to stay atop the region standings this week. Region 1 is shaping up to be one of the toughest regions in Class AA. The Canes are averaging 30.6 points per game and allowing 15.4. While we don’t have firm statistical numbers for Fitzgerald, we can tell you they will do most of their damage on the ground with backs Sylon Davis and Diondre Paschal. If they can get going, it might be a long night for Worth County.

There certainly are no easy week’s in region 1 and neither team can afford a let down. While we believe Worth County is a playoff team this season, we believe it will be tough to slow down Fitzgerald. We like the Canes by 6.

The Skinny

The Whitewater Wildcats have won back to back games and now sit at 2-1 in region play. The Wildcats still have hopes of hosting a state playoff game, but they still have a lot of work in front of them as this is one of the toughest regions in Class 4A. Whitewater is averaging 36.1 points per game while the defense is allowing 21.1. Whitewater does most of their damage offensively on the ground, averaging 210.7 rushing yards per game and just 88.2 yard per game through the air. The Wildcats use running back by committee, but Xavier Clay-Turner is the leading rusher with 307 yards and 4-TDs on the season. Defensively, Popo Aguirre leads the team in total tackles, while Tyler Glover is tops in sacks (6).

The Trinity Christian Lions are one season removed from winning the Class A-Private state title. After a slow start to this season, the Lions have won four straight games. They are averaging 24.1 points per game while allowing 17.8. The Lions are averaging 191.2 yards per game through the air and 131.7 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Henry Brodnax has thrown for 1,055 yard and 8-TDs. He’s also tied for the team lead in rushing yards along with Phoenix Moss as they’ve each rushed for 182 yards. Defensively, Cam Matthews leads the team in total tackles and is also tied for the team lead in sacks along with Ethan McDowell.

The Trinity Christian defense has been steadily improving all season and scored their first shutout of the year last week. We doubt they will be able to keep Whitewater out of the end zone this week, but we do expect another low scoring game. We like Trinity Christian by 4.

TFR – GHSA Football Rankings – Week 7

Week-7 of high school football in the great state of Georgia is in the books. Hurricane Ian forced many teams to move games around this week, but most games that were scheduled did get played or rescheduled. As always, there were some games that caught us by surprise. Here are our new rankings for this week.

In Class 7A, not much changes in the Top-10 this week. Walton survived a scare from previously ranked No. 10 North Paulding. The North Paulding loss drops them from the Top-10, which makes room for a resurgent Lowndes Vikings team who rounds out the Top-10 at No. 10.

Once again, there were no changes to the Class 6A rankings, as all of the teams in the Top-10 won this weekend. The same can be said for Class A-Division I as none of the Top-10 lost this past week.

Class 5-A might have seen the biggest upset as Calhoun traveled to Cartersville and beat the Purple Hurricanes in three overtimes. The loss by Cartersville drops them to No. 5 this week, while Calhoun is up to No. 4. The new No. 1 team is Dutchtown. Meanwhile, the Warner Robins Demons are back in the Top-10 this week after their shutout victory last week.

Not too much changed in Class 4-A. Trinity Christian is in at No. 10 this week after downing previously ranked Starr’s Mill 3-0. The loss by Starr’s Mill drops them out of the rankings this week.

Over in Class 3-A, Dougherty County made a statement with a 16-point victory over Crisp County. The win moves the Trojans up to No. 5 this week, while Crisp drops to No. 10. The Savannah Christian Raiders find themselves in the Top-10 for the first time this season as they come at No. 9 this week.

In Class 2-A, not much changed at the top of the rankings. The Appling Co-Pierce Co game has been moved to Monday, after being cancelled on Friday. Northeast (Macon) is back in the Top-10 this week after Columbia drops from the rankings as a result of their loss to Callaway. There are several teams in Class 2A that are close to Top-10 caliber that have not found their way into the rankings including Worth County, Vidalia, Putnam County, Laney, North Cobb Christian and Athens Academy.

Finally, in Class A-Division II, McIntosh County is back in the Top-10 at No. 10 this week, as they replace Mt. Zion-Carroll who lost to Mt. Pisgah on Friday night.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 7

Region play continues in Cherokee County as all five of the Class 6A County schools are in action on Thursday night. Yes, that’s right, Thursday night. Here are our previews for Week-7 Cherokee County Football.

Down in Woodstock, the Wolverines will host the Rome Wolves. The Wolverines have a tough task of playing one of the top team’s in the state the week after break. Can the Woodstock shock the region and the state this Friday? Next, the River Ridge Knights travel to play neighborhood rival, Sequoyah. The Chiefs scored one of the biggest victories in the county as they upended Etowah their last time out. Will Sequoyah’s defense stymie the Knights or will it be another big game for the River Ridge offense?

Finally, over in Macedonia, the Creekview Grizzlies will host the Etowah Eagles. Creekview returns to the gridiron looking to stay atop the region. Meanwhile, Etowah will look to bounce back after they suffered their first loss of the season. Will the Creekview defense be up to the task in slowing down Xavier Mahoney, Reece Wehr and Co., or will the Eagle’s offense get back on track?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Woodstock Wolverines return from the bye week in search of their first win of the season. Last time out, the Wolverines showed some promise on both sides of the ball. Woodstock is averaging 63 yards per game on the ground and 70 yards per game through the air. While the Wolverines offense is still working out the kinks, the defense has shown improvement with the likes of Drew Burmeister, Carson Gray and Evan McKeller as they lead the team in total tackles. Meanwhile Tate Washington has also made his presence felt along both lines of scrimmage.

The Rome Wolves will look to stay undefeated in region play, as they visit Woodstock this week. The Wolves are averaging 28.6 points per game while allowing 15.2 points per game. Their offense is powered by quarterback Reece Fountain. Fountain has a plethora of talent surrounding him on offense including Martel Height, Martavious Collins and William Bray. The defense is led by Clemson commit Stephylan Green and linebacker Alto Moore who will certainly be playing on Saturdays down the road, as the junior has received interest from the likes of East Carolina, Liberty and Michigan State.

Woodstock is facing a seemingly insurmountable task in defeating Rome. However, as we mentioned before we have seen improvement from the Wolverines. The offense will need to make strides fast and Woodstock will need to turn Rome over. We believe that’s possible, but not probable. We like the Wolves by 5 touchdowns this week.

The Skinny

The Sequoyah Chiefs won their second consecutive game back on the 9th. For the Chiefs it has certainly been a reversal of early season fortunes. In their last two games, the Chiefs defense is allowing 10.5 points per game which is a stark contrast to their first three opponents in which Sequoyah allowed 37.3 points per game. The Sequoyah offense has been led by Jackson Hancock who has scored on the ground and through the air and on special teams. He is a special player, but not the only star for the Chiefs. Offensively it has been a mix of Hancock, Tyler Bell, Asante Chimanda and an unusual suspect, freshman quarterback Kolby Martin who has stepped in wonderfully for the Chiefs.

The River Ridge Knights were able to bounce back from their first loss of the season as they shutout county rival Woodstock. River Ridge was able to get their run game going last outing as Isaiah Coughlan and Camden Cox combined for 150 yards on the ground and 5-TDs. Through five games the Knights offense is averaging 218 yards per game through the air and just over 130 yards per game on the ground. Defensively, River Ridge is allowing 19.4 points per game. Statistical leaders for the Knights defense include Brandon Burdette, Will Hughes and Brendan Dye.

Sequoyah’s defense has answered the bell each of the past two weeks. They will be tested by a potent offense this week. If River Ridge can establish their run game, we like thier chances. We expect another close matchup, but we like the Knights by 4.

The Skinny

The Creekview Grizzlies will be back at home for the third consecutive week as they will host the Etowah Eagles. (This is only the third meeting between the two schools). Creekview got another big game from Isaac Hubert who rushed for 137 yards and 2- TDs in his last outing. On the season, Hubert has now rushed for 367 yards and 6-TDs while quarterback Austin Guest has thrown for 800 yards and 4- TDs. The Grizzlies are scoring 17.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 18.6 points per game. Defensive statistical leaders for Creekview include Cole Sackman, Reed Anderson and Lee Brock.

The Etowah Eagles suffered defeat for the first time this season in their last time out. The Eagles exciting quarterback, Xavier Mahoney was bottled up in the loss. Mahoney has still rushed for 657 yards and remains a big pay threat for Etowah. Perhaps a bit of good news for the Eagles is that Jack Strickland was back in action. He’s more of the pure passer for the Eagles. That will only make this offense more dynamic this week and for the rest of the season. Etowah is averaging 25.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 19.4 points per game.

The Grizzlies defense will have a tall task in trying to slow down the Etowah Express. Meanwhile, we can almost be certain that the Etowah defense will be fed a steady dose of Isaac Hubert. All of the Grizzlies wins this season have come at home. We believe the home field plays a part in the game this week. We like Creekview by 6.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 7 (Part II)

We enter Week-7 of the Georgia High School Football season and the threat of Hurricane Ian has prompted many teams across the state to reschedule games to Wednesday or Thursday. This is another big week of high school football, as there are many games that will go a long way in determining region seedings for the state football tournament. This is part two of our Georgia High School Football Previews where we take a look at eight great games around the state.

First up, in Southwest Georgia, the Dougherty Trojans will host the Crisp County Cougars. This is the region opener for both teams and we believe the winner will have the inside track to host a home playoff game come November. Will Crisp be able to slow down Dougherty and Cam Davis or will the home team hold serve? Moving up to Middle Georgia, Peach County will host Carver of Atlanta in a big non-region Class 3A matchup. Can Carver recover from their first loss of the season or will Peach County’s talented running backs be the difference?

Over in Baxley, the Appling County Pirates will host the Pierce County Bears in the region opener for both teams. Will Pierce’s D.J. Bell continue his outstanding performance this season or will it be Dayson Griffis and the Pirates who start off region play with a big victory at home? Finally, in Atlanta, the Columbia Eagles will host the Callaway Cavaliers. Columbia has been one of the surprise stories this season. They will get their biggest test as Callaway has been at or near the top of Region 5 for the past few years.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Dougherty Trojans are 5-0 for the second consecutive season. Their offense is humming along averaging 31.6 points per game while averaging over 370 yards of offense per game. Quarterback Kameron Davis has thrown for 1,152 yards and 12-TDs and has not been intercepted this season in 112 pass attempts. Davis also leads the team in rushing with 541 yards while Jacob Stallworth is second on the team in rushing with 319 yards and 6-TDs. Larry Lane leads the Trojans in receiving with 25 catches for 418 yards and 4-TDs. The Dougherty defense is allowing 17.8 points per game.

The Crisp County Cougars fell to Class 6A Northside Warner Robins last time out. Both of their losses this season have come at the hands of teams in the highest two classifications in the state. The Cougars are averaging 18.8 points per game and allowing 21.4 points on defense. In their three victories, Crisp County is averaging 25.6 points per game, while in their two losses, they are averaging 8.5 points per game.

Only one of the teams that Dougherty has faced has a record above .500 to this point in the season. Crisp seems to have the edge in strength of schedule. We believe that strength of schedule comes into play this week. We like Crisp on the road by 3.

The Skinny

The Peach County Trojans got back over the .500 mark with a victory last week. The Trojans went back to the ground and rushed for over 480 yards in the victory. Most of that coming from Chris McMillian and Robert Jones. The Trojans are averaging 29.8 points per game and allowing 22.8. Interesting note for Peach County, in their three victories they are averaging 45 points per game and allowing 14.6. However, in both of their losses, the score has been 35-7.Suffice to say that Peach will need to score more than 7 points this week if history is any indicator.

The Carver Atlanta Panthers were off last week and are coming off their first loss of the season to Class 7A Buford. The Panthers offense is averaging 214 yards per game through the air and 165 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Bryce Bowens has thrown for 856 yards and 6-TDs and also leads the team in rushing. Bowens’ top receivers this season have been Deandre Buchannon (24 reception, 335 Yards, 3-TDs) and Zyee’k Mender (14 receptions, 330 yards, 4-TDs). Aquantis Clemmons leads the defense with 6 sacks. Speaking of defense, Carver is allowing 25.2 points per game this season.

It will be interesting to see how Carver bounces back from the loss the last time out. They will have to be up to the task in slowing down the fast pace attack of Peach County. We believe Peach may have found the spark they needed last week. We like the Trojans at home by 4.

The Skinny

The Appling County Pirates will be at home this week as they look for their first victory over a team from the State of Georgia. Both of the Pirates victory have come over out of state teams. Appling County is averaging 25.6 points per game while the defense is allowing 10.3 points per game. Their only loss this season came at the hands of Class 4A Wayne County. The Pirates have a talented tandem at running back in Jaylen Johnson and Jamarion Williams who both possess game breaking speed and can also find creases in between the tackles. Dawson Griffis has also been effective throwing the ball this season, keeping opposing defenses off balance.

The Pierce County Bears are averaging over 430 yards of offense this season with the vast majority of that coming on the ground. Quarterback D.J. Ball has only passed for 231 yards but leads the team in rushing with 921 yards and 13-TDs. Jimaryion Guyton is second on the team in rushing with 546 yards and 10-TDs. If Bell does go to the air, expect him to target Jaquez White who has caught 8 passes for 157 yards and 2-TDs. Pierce County is averaging 45.6 points per game while the defense is allowing just 10 points per game. This is the second time since 2019 that the Bears have started 4-0.

Appling County leads this series and have a couple of talented backs that will lean heavily on. The problem is whether or not they can slow down Pierce’s Bell. While that is certainly possible, we don’t think it is probable. We like the Bears by 11.

The Skinny

The Columbia Eagles find themselves in some uncharted territory as they jockey for a region crown. They can take a big step to their first region title on Friday if they can defeat visiting Callaway. The Eagles have been doing most of their damage on the ground Royce Tolbert and Jadan Baugh have led the way on the ground, while Baugh also leads the team in receiving. Columbia is averaging 21.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 14.6. The Eagles defense has recorded two shutouts on the season.

The Callaway Cavaliers have won two straight games after starting the season on a three game losing streak. The Cavs had their best offensive performance of the season as the scored 44 points last week in their victory over Redan. Similar to their opponent, look for the Cavs to do most of their damage on the ground. They are averaging 22.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 23.6 points per game.

This game will go a long way in determining the Region 5-2A crown. Columbia has played well and they are certainly on the right track, but we believe the challenging schedule Callaway has faced to this point has prepared them for games like this. We like the Cavs by 8.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 7 (Part I)

We enter Week-7 of the Georgia High School Football season and the threat of Hurricane Ian has prompted many teams across the state to reschedule games to Wednesday or Thursday. This is another big week of high school football, as there are many games that will go a long way in determining region seedings for the state football tournament. This is part one of our Georgia High School Football Previews where we take a look at eight great games around the state.

First up, in a non-region game, the North Paulding Wolfpack host the Walton Raiders. North Paulding’s only loss of the season was a one-point defeat, while Walton has won three straight games. This should be a high scoring game as both offenses can really put up points. Meanwhile, down in Ocilla, there is a big Top-10 non-region game as Irwin County hosts Swainsboro. Will Swainsboro’s ground game get the job done or will the balanced attack of Irwin County be the difference?

Over in Southwest Georgia, the Lee County Trojans will host the Houston County Bears. Lee has dominated the series, but the Bears are off to a red-hot start. Can Houston dethrone Lee or will the Trojans continue their dominance in Region 1-6A? Finally, in Northwest Georgia, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes host the Calhoun Yellow Jackets. This has the feeling of a region title game even though we are still in September. Can the Jackets offense keep pace with an electric Cartersville offense?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The North Paulding Wolfpack have been flying under the radar. Their only loss this season was a one point margin of defeat to Kennesaw Mountain. North Paulding is averaging 44.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 23.2 points per game. Quarterback Boone Anderson has thrown for 1,276 yards and 20-TDs. Twelve different wide receivers had caught passes this season. The statistical leader is Owen Dupree, who has caught 10 passes for 375 yards and 6-TDs. Jaylen Poe has rushed for 731 yards and 8-TDs for the Wolfpack. Defensively, Danny Pitts leads the team with 45 total tackles. The defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 12 times this season with Aidan Maddox leading the way with 4.5.

The Walton Raiders have won three straight since dropping their opener. Quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has thrown for 1,288 yards and 12-TDs. His top four receivers are Ayden Jackson, Cameron Loyd, Hunter Teal, and Wyatt Sonderman. The quartet has combined for 56 receptions, 1,238 yards and 12-TDs. Makari Bodiford leads the Raiders on the ground with 450 yards and 6-TDs. Defensively, Walton is allowing 21 points per game. Linebacker Ashton Woods and safety Matthew Traynor lead the team in total tackles.

We expect the scoreboard operator to be extremely busy on Thursday as both of these teams can really move the football. North Paulding should keep this game close but we believe Walton has an edge in talent this week. We like the Raiders by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Irwin County Indians are winners of their last four games. During that stretch, they have not allowed more than 14 points in a game. Overall, Irwin is averaging 35 points per game. They are doing it with about as balanced of attack there can be, averaging 169.4 yards per game through the air and 169.6 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Cody Soliday has thrown for 844 yards and 6-TDs. Demarkus Lundy and Shane Marshall have combined for 665 yards and 11-TDs on the ground. Defensively, Irwin County is allowing 12.4 points per game.

The Swainsboro Tigers are 5-0 for the first time in 12 years. Swainsboro has also won 11 consecutive regular season games entering this week. The Tigers are led by quarterback Ty Adams and running back Quindarius Brown, as they have combined to rush for 981 yards and 12-TDs. Swainsboro has only attempted 16 passes so far this season. As a team, the Tigers are averaging 323.2 yards per game on the ground. Jonorian Foots leads the defense in total tackles and in sacks. Swainsboro’s defense has recorded three shutouts and is only allowing 3.8 points per game.

This might be one of the better matchups regardless of classification this week. Swainsboro’s defense will certainly be a factor in this game. We don’t believe either team will get to their points per game average. We believe Irwin County is a little more dynamic offensively, and that’s why we like the Indians. Irwin County by 5.

The Skinny

The Lee County Trojans are the five-time defending Region 1-6A champions and will begin their title defense at home this week. The Trojans are averaging 36.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 13 points per game. Lee County has already recorded two shutouts on the season. The Trojans will likely look to establish the run with sophomore sensation Ousmane Kromah. Kromah is a physical running back who does not shy away from contact and has proved to be a great pass catcher out of the backfield. Quarterback Chris Martin and JD Ferguson have proved to be a very good passing and catching duo in helping establish a balanced attack on offense.

The Houston County Bears are looking to go 6-0 for the first time since 2015 when the Bears made a run to the quarterfinals. Houston has been putting up some gaudy numbers averaging 316.6 yards per game through the air and 155.2 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Antwan Hill, Jr. has thrown for over 1,500 yards with 15-TDs. His top receivers this season have been Ricky Johnson (29 receptions, 544 yards and 7-TDs), Kale Woodburn (22 receptions 399 yards, 4-TDs) and Recordo Carver (17 receptions, 254 yards, 3-TDs). Houston County is averaging 50.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 16.6.

Houston County has never beaten Lee County. This could be the year that they get over the hump. They certainly have an offense capable of putting up big numbers. Lee has the experience and is playing at home, but something tells us this will be a closely contested game. We like Lee by 2.

The Skinny

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will be on the hunt for their second consecutive region title and their 9th in 10 years as they kick off region play on Thursday. The Canes have turned to freshman signal caller Nate Russell to lead the offense in relief of Paul Gamble. Russell has thrown for 538 yards and 7-TDs. Top receivers for the Canes include Jamauri Bryce (20 receptions, 387 yards, 4-TDs) and Colin Fletcher (8 receptions, 200 yards, 4-TDs) Defensively, Myles Forristal leads the team in total tackles and in sacks. The Cartersville defense has recorded three shutouts this season and is allowing 7.2 points per game

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets got back into the win column last week over Sonoraville. The Jackets are in search of their first region crown since 2018. Quarterback Trey Townsend has emerged as one of the top passers in Northwest Georgia. He is complimented well by running back Caden Williams who has a combination of power and speed and is also a good pass catcher out of the backfield. The Calhoun offense is averaging 25.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 23 per game.

We know it’s early in the season, but we believe the winner of this game will go on and win the region title. We believe the difference in this game will be the offensive line for Cartersville. Expect another close game on Thursday with Cartersville edging Calhoun by 7.
