Tale of the Tape

Defending Champion: Warner Robins

Current No. 1: Ware County (TFR)/ Cartersville (GHSFD)

Best 1st Round Game: Creekside vs Coffee

Longest Playoff Drought:  Cass (2006)

Week 1 Upset Alert: Creekside, Apalachee, New Manchester, Southwest DeKalb, Dutchtown

Final Four Predictions: Creekside; Warner Robins; Woodward Academy; Ware County

Sleeper: Blessed Trinity

We like Warner Robins to win the state title again. Earlier this season, the Demons looked invincible but Ware County gave them a wake-up call in region play. Looming large is a second round matchup between Cartersville and Warner Robins. There are other potential great second round matchups including St. Pius-Creekside, Ware County-Calhoun, and Woodward-Blessed Trinity. It gets real very quickly in Class AAAAA. Woodward Academy seems to have the best path to the final four.

Our sleeper is Blessed Trinity as they sport one of the best junior running backs in the state. But several other teams could fit that bill, including Starr’s Mill, Whitewater, and Jones County. This shakes out to be one of the most competitive brackets in all eight classifications.

The Skinny

The Creekside Seminoles are in the playoffs for the fourth straight season. The Seminoles had reeled off six consecutive wins before their loss last week to Woodward Academy. The Seminoles are averaging 35.7 points per game while the defense is allowing 9.3. Creekside is averaging 145.7 yards per game through the air and 211.1 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Nyqua Lett has thrown for 1,443 yards and 16-TDs. Lett is also second on the team in rushing with 531 yards and 6-TDs. He is flanked in the backfield by Kamauri Davis (548 yards, 9-TDs) and Cameron Burch (524 yards, 11-TDs). Linebacker Vincent Hill leads the team in total tackles while Javeon Miller has an eye-popping 20 sacks this season. The defense has also intercepted 10 passes on the year. Creekside has defeated four playoff teams this season, including two from higher classifications.

The Coffee Trojans are in the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. They enter this week an even 2-2 in their last four games. Coffee has had a relatively balanced attack this season, averaging 149.7 yards on the ground and 179 yards per game through the air. Quarterback Justin Swords has thrown for 1,236 yards and 9-TDs. Running backs Fred Brown and Brady Skipper have combined to rush for 787 yards and 9-TDs to lead the way on the ground. Maurice Turner is the team’s leading receiver with 27 receptions for 374 yards and 4-TDs. Linebacker Brandon High leads the defense in total tackles and sacks. The Trojans secondary has intercepted 8 passes this season. Coffee is averaging 28.6 points per game while they area allowing 12 points per game.

Both of these teams are battle tested and we expect this one to be a defensive struggle. If the Coffee offense can avoid turnovers we like them to be in the game late. However, we believe Creekside’s defense is a little ahead of Coffee this week. Seminoles by 6.

The Skinny

The Dutchtown Bulldogs are in the post season for the fifth consecutive season. The Bulldogs had won six consecutive games before falling to Jones County last week. Dutchtown is averaging 17.6 points per game while the defense is allowing 11.5 points per game. Expect the Bulldogs to rely heavily on the run game behind junior Jamal Bing and sophomore dual threat quarterback Bryce Clavon to pace the offense this week. Dutchtown has defeated three playoff teams this season.

The Harris County Tigers had won five straight games before being derailed by Region champ Whitewater last week. The Tigers are in the post-season for the fifth consecutive season and for the fourth time under head Coach Jamie Fox. The Tigers have not advanced past the first round since 2013. They are led this season by quarterback Cooper Corey who has thrown for 2,089 yards and 16-TDs. Corey also leads the team in rushing with 743 yards and 13-TDs. Thadous Askew is second on the team in rushing with 704 yards and 10-TDs. Meanwhile, senior receiver K.D. Hutchinson is having a banner season with 43 receptions for 866 yards and 9-TDs. Wyatt Ervin and Jadon Smith lead the team in total tackles. The Tigers have sacked opposing quarterbacks 21 times this season and have forced 17 turnovers. They are averaging 33.8 points per game while allowing 26.6

This will be a battle of a really good Dutchtown defense against an explosive Harris County offense. Home field advantage will certainly benefit the Bulldogs, but we believe Harris County scores late to steal one this week. Tigers by 2.

TFR Class 6A – GHSA Playoff Preview – Week-1

We will give you our overall thoughts on each classification and then preview two of the top games for each classification. Tale of the Tape

Defending Champion: Buford

Current No. 1: Buford (TFR & GHSFD)

Best 1st Round Game: Rome vs. Johns Creek

Longest Playoff Drought: Effingham County (2018)

Week 1 Upset Watch: Dacula, Rome, Cambridge, Richmond Hill, Carrollton

Final Four Predictions: Rome; Riverwood; Buford; Westlake

Sleeper: Creekview

Buford is our favorite to win the AAAAAA title again this season. The Wolves have not lost to an opponent from Georgia yet; with their only loss coming at the hands of Chaminade-Madonna of Florida by seven points. We really like the Riverwood Raiders and their electric quarterback Avery Smith to make a deep run this season. Their are no gimmes in the playoffs but Smith has been on of the most explosive players in the Class. Don’t forget about Westlake They’ll have a tough road to the final four, but this is a team that has been there and done that. Our favorite potential matchup is a quarterfinal draw that could see a rematch of the 2020 state title game with Buford and Lee County going head to head. Our sleeper, is Creekview. Their defense is playing about as good as any right now. They won’t scare you getting off the bus, but they find ways to win.

We put five teams on upset alert this week. Those are the teams that we believe might be ripe for a first run upset at home. Much will be determined over the next five weeks. Enjoy the playoffs, because they will be over before we know it. Best of luck to all of the teams competing.

The Skinny

The Rome Wolves enter the playoffs on a six game win streak. The Wolves have qualified for the post season for seven consecutive seasons. During that run they have won two state titles and have advanced to the second round in each of those appearances. Rome is averaging 32.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 16.8 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Reece Fountain has thrown for 2,067 yards and 15-TDs, while completing 67.8% of his passes. Senior Bryson Hill leads the Wolves in rushing with 1,004 yards rushing and 17-TDs. Martel Height has caught 55 passes for 837 yards while DeKaylon Daniel has caught 46 passes for 502 yards. Rome has defeated four playoff teams this season.

The Johns Creek Gladiators seemed poised to claim their third region title in four years until they were defeated by Creekview on Friday night. The Gladiators have won two of their last three games entering the playoffs, but one has to think how will they respond to last week’s loss. The Gladiators have an explosive offense, averaging 35 points per game while their defense is allowing 24.5 points per game. Quarterback Kyle Durham has thrown for 2,002 yards and 22-TDs. His top receiver has been Josh “ Jet” Thompson. Thompson is a speedy receiver who has caught 26 passes for 737 yards and 14-TDs. Running back Tylan Johnson has rushed for 1,159 yards and 9-TDs. Linebacker Sam Oppenheimer leads the team in total tackles while defensive end Thaxton Gallagher leads the team with 5.5 sacks. Gallagher is joined along the line with one the top players in the class of 2024, Alex Cunningham and Andrew Guth. This trio can really get after the quarterback.

Johns Creek certainly has the talent to upend Rome this week. But the offensive line while have to do a great job of blocking Stephylan Green and Jalen White; that’s easier said than done. We believe this will be one of the most competitive games in Class 6A this Saturday. We like the Wolves by 3.

The Skinny

The Cambridge Bears have completed their best regular season in school history. Cambridge will be looking to build off their 2nd round playoff appearance last season. The Bears are averaging 32.2 points per game while the defense has allowed just 15 points per game. Cambridge enters the playoffs winners of three of their last four games. Quarterback Zach Harris has thrown for over 1,900 yards and 21-TDs. Running back Christian Isibor has rushed for 500 yards and 6-TDs in six games, prior to last week’s victory. Will Taylor and Cade Ellington have been the two top receivers for the Bears. Linebackers Bennet Long and Brooks Morley lead the team in total tackles.  Cambridge has defeated three playoff teams this season.

The South Paulding Spartans enter the playoffs on a four game win streak. The Spartans are in the post season for the second time in three years. South Paulding is averaging 35.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 28.9. The Spartans went through a mid-season coaching change, but the team has responded well. Quarterback Kasen Weisman has thrown for 2,035 yards and 17-TDs. However, Weisman’s status for Friday’s game is uncertain. Expect the Spartans to rely on the legs of Jamarion Wilcox who has rushed for 1,288 yards and 20-TDs. Brendan Gates and Josiah Harris lead the team in receiving with a combined 55 receptions for 812 yards and 7-TDs. The Spartans have defeated two playoff teams this season.

We thought Cambridge might have been on upset alert, but their steady play and the fact that we don’t believe Weisman will play this weekend has us second guessing. We like the Bears at home by 10.

TFR Class 7A – GHSA Playoff Preview – Week-1

The GHSA Playoffs get under way on Friday night. The past few seasons, we have attempted to preview every playoff game. This season we are taking a bit of a different approach. We will give you our overall thoughts on each classification and then preview two of the top games for each classification. For Class 7A or preview highlight features Colquitt vs. Walton and Marietta vs. Tift County.

Tale of the Tape

Defending Champion: Grayson

Current No. 1: Collins Hill (TFR & GHSFD)

Best 1st Round Game – Colquitt County vs. Walton

Longest Playoff Drought: Duluth (1986)

Week 1 Upset Alert: Mill Creek; Colquitt County; Pebblebrook; Grayson

Final Four Predictions: Milton; Brookwood; North Cobb; Collins Hill

Sleeper: Archer

The Skinny

Collins Hill is our favorite to win the AAAAAAA title this season, (even without All-State athlete Travis Hunter). The Eagles face potential matchups with perennial power Lowndes in the quarterfinals. North Cobb and Milton have been hanging around the top 5 all season long and we expect them to cruise through to the quarterfinals. It’s hard to believe we have Archer as a sleeper as a No. 1 seed, but the Tigers have won six straight games and have only yielded one touchdown during that stretch. Other potential big time matchups in Class 7-A include Milton vs. Mill Creek and Colquitt County vs Brookwood in the quarterfinals and perhaps a Collins Hill vs North Cobb semifinal.

We have four teams on upset alert this week as outlined above. While we aren’t predicting an outright upset, we see those games where the lower seed could get a win over the home team. Much will be determined over the next 5 weeks. It should be an exciting ride.

The Skinny

The Colquitt County Packers ended the season winning seven of their last eight games. They are in the post season for the 13th consecutive season. They’ve won at least one game in the playoffs during that stretch including two state titles. The Packers are averaging 38.6 points per game while the defense is allowing 23.1. Quarterback Neko Fann has stepped in at quarterback and thrown for 1,824 yards and 27-TDs on the season. He’s completing 62% of his passes and is just a sophomore. Charlie Pace joins Fann in the backfield and has rushed for 1,122 yards and 12-TDs. Receivers Ny Carr and the aforementioned Pace have combined to catch 61 passes for 19-TDs. Linebackers Ricky Yates and Pershaun Fann lead the team in total tackles. The Colquitt defense has sacked opposing  quarterbacks 22 times while forcing 22 turnovers.

The Walton Raiders looked to be primed to host a first round playoff game before they were derailed by Marietta last week. Expect the Raiders to continue to platoon Jeremy Hecklinski and Zak Roszman at quarterback. Prior to last week’s game, the duo had combined to throw for 1,721 yards and 16-TDs. They’ve completed 67% of their passes. Sutton Smith is tops on the team in rushing with 562 yards and 11-TDs through their first 8 games. Mustafa Hefner leads the team in receiving through that span as well with 18 receptions for 389 yards and 5-TDs. This is the 5th consecutive playoff appearance for the Raiders.

Walton is a dangerous team that can score in all three phases of the game. It should be a good matchup watching Marcus Allen for Walton defend against Ny Carr. The long trip to Moultrie might be the difference in the game. That and the fact the Neko Fann has really settled in at quarterback. We like the Packers by 10.

The Skinny

The Marietta Blue Devils are in the post season for the fifth consecutive season. They enter the playoffs winners of three out of their last four games. The Blue Devils have defeated five playoff teams this season. Quarterback Tyler Hughes has thrown for 2,910 yards and 37-TDs while completing 65% of his passes. Hughes also leads the Devils in rushing with 506 yards and 6-TDs. His top receivers are tight-end Camden Overton (58 receptions, 842 yards, 7-TDs), Kamryn Perry (51 receptions, 894 yards, 15-TDs) and Christian Mathis (44 receptions, 779 yards, 10-TDs). Carlos Cervantes leads the team with 102 total tackles. Marietta has sacked opposing quarterbacks 28 times. They are averaging 34.7 points per game while the defense is allowing 21.5.

The Tift County Blue Devils are the No. 3 seed from Region-1 and will be the third team from Region-1 that Marietta has faced this season. The Blue Devils come limping into the playoffs winners of only one of their last four games. Tift County has defeated four playoff teams this season. They are averaging 17.7 points per game while allowing 16.1. Only two of Tift County’s victories have come over teams with a winning record. While they aren’t scoring points in bunches, Tyre West has been wreaking havoc all season along the defensive line.

Marietta will be playing in the friendly confines Northcutt Stadium and they’ve shown a propensity for putting up plenty of points. We believe Tift can make it close for a half, but Marietta is just too explosive this week. Blue Devils by 16.

TFR Week-12 GHSA Football Poll

We have reached the end of the regular season and this is our final GHSA Football Poll until after the playoffs. There were no changes in Class 7A, 6A, 5A or Class A-Private. Meanwhile, in Class 4A, Perry took down Baldwin, dropping the Braves down to No. 10 and moving the Panthers up one spot this week. Class 3A had the most shake up as Sandy Creek took down the No. 1 Cedar Grove Saints. Pierce County jumps to No. 1 as they shutout Appling last week and the defending champs look like they are primed for another deep run.

In Class 2-A, Northeast Macon fell from the poll after a loss to Lamar. That made room for Swainsboro to make an entry back in at No. 10. While in Class-A Private, Washington-Wilkes is back in the poll after defeating Towns County coupled with an E.C.I. loss to Metter.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 12 – Part II

It’s hard to believe that we have reached the final week of the regular season for high school football here in the Peach State. Here is the second half of our Georgia High School Football previews. Matchups in this edition include Pierce County vs Appling County, Rockmart vs Ringgold, Norcross vs Archer and Metter vs Emmanuel County Institute.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

Special thanks to the Georgia Helmet Project for providing each team’s helmet. You can find all of their work here: http://gahelmetproject.com

Historical records are provided by the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. (ghsfa.org)

The Skinny

The Pierce County Bears are in search of their third straight region title and their 18th consecutive region victory dating back to 2018. Pierce is also the defending 3-A state champs. Their only two defeats are a pair of 7-point losses against Brunswick, a 6-A ranked opponent and highly ranked Rabun County, many peoples favorite to win Class 2-A. Scoring for the Bears has been down a little from last season as they are averaging 29 points per game, however the defense has been stout, allowing just 8.1 points per game including four shutouts. Pierce County does most of their work on the ground as they are averaging 206.4 yards per game led by junior D.J. Bell (511 yards, 4-TDs) and Dayton Baker (459 yards, 6-TDs). Pierce County has recorded 33 sacks and forced 12 turnovers this season.

The Appling County Pirates will be looking to cap off their undefeated season and claim their first region title since 2013. The Pirates are averaging 39 points per game and are allowing just 7.1. They have not given up more than 10 points in a game this season and their closest margin of victory is 17 points, over Class 7-A Tift County. Appling County has two capable quarterbacks in Dayton Griffis and Patrick Crosby. However, much of the fuss around Baxley is around the defense and Darris Smith. Smith is an absolute wrecking ball on defense and is constantly causing havoc in the opposition’s backfield.

This is another matchup that we believe will be a defensive battle. Smith has the ability to be a major disruptor again this week, and while we believe Appling has the propensity to put up a lot of points, this one will be close. We like the Pirates by 6.

The Skinny

The Rockmart Yellow Jackets are in search of their fifth consecutive region title.Rockmart has a 38 game region win streak dating back to October 21, 2016. Rockmart is led offensively by a stable of running backs including Jojo Haynes, Cam Ferguson, Brent Washington, Nahzir Turner and quarterback J.D. Davis. The quintet has rushed for 2,266 yards and 29-TDs. (Another scary proposition is that all five are underclassmen!) Davis has also thrown for 958 yards and 12-TDs and to date, has not thrown an interception. Dennis Sims leads the team in total tackles while linebacker Terrian Webb has recorded 11 sacks to pace their defense. Rockmart’s secondary has been a “no-fly” zone as they have intercepted 13 passes this season. On the year, Rockmart is averaging 41.7 points per game while allowing 17.2. Their only loss this season was in the opening week to Class 6-A Rome.

The Ringgold Tigers are off to the best start in school history and are two wins away from tying a school record for wins in a season. That feat was accomplished back in 2013 when the Tigers made a run to the semi-finals. Ringgold is in search of their first region title in school history. They are averaging 41.5 points per game while the defense is allowing just 10.3. The Tigers defense has recorded three shutouts on the season. While we don’t have official stats for the Ringgold, running back Kori Dumas is a running back with good balance and speed, while quarterback Mason Parker has shown great pocket presence and has the ability to throw with accuracy in and outside of the pocket.

The big question in this game is whether or not Ringgold can slow down the Rockmart ground machine. We believe the Tigers can keep it close, but like Rockmart at home by 2.

The Skinny

The Norcross Blue Devils have won six straight games and look to make it seven this week as they attempt to win their second straight region title. During that six game win streak, the Blue Devils have allowed a total of 16 points and have posted three shutouts. On the year, Norcross is averaging 30.5 points per game and allowing 12.3. The Blue Devils are averaging 128.3 yards per game through the air and 150.6 yards per game on the ground. On Defense, Zakye Baker leads the team in total tackles with 110, including 35 tackles for loss. Norcross has sacked opposing quarterbacks 18 times and forced 23 turnovers.

Head Coach Andy Dyer has guided the Archer Tigers to five straight wins and with one more, they will claim their first region title since 2017. While the Tigers total wins might have dropped off this season, their point production has not, as they are averaging 34.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 12.3 points per game. The Tigers have shut out four of their last five opponents during the win-streak, and they only yielded one touchdown in the other game. Quarterbacks Caleb Peevy and William Wallace have combined to throw for 1,292 yards and 11-TDs, while Chase Sellers leads the team in rushing with 639 yards and 7-TDs. The Archer secondary has intercepted 10 passes on the season.

Don’t be deceived by the Archer Tigers record. Those early season losses came at the hands of very talented football teams. Norcross will have their hands full with the Archer defense. We like the Tigers on the road by 4.

The Skinny

The Metter Tigers have won 17 straight region games and are 9-0 for the second consecutive season. Metter is looking for their third straight region title. The Tigers are led on offense by versatile running backs Antwan Coney and Danny Cheley. They are averaging 46.3 points per game while the defense is allowing 11.4 points per game. Metter’s defense has shutout three opponents. They’ve also scored 62 points twice this season.

Emmanuel County Institute has won seven consecutive games entering this week. The only blemish on their schedule is a two-point loss to Savannah Country Day. The Bulldogs are averaging 28.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 12.7 points per game. Backs P.J. Farnum and Daquan Jones are a potent 1-2 punch for Emmanuel County. Quarterback Bryce Kearson throws well enough to keep most defenses off balance.

The winner of this game will be crowned the region champ. We expect a lot of points scored this week as both of theses offenses are explosive, but Metter is a little more deeper at running back and we believe that will be the difference. Tigers by 12.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 12 – Part I

We have reached the final week of the regular season for high school football here in the Peach State. Here is the first half of our Georgia High School Football previews. Matchups in this edition include Macon County vs Chattahoochee County, Creekside vs Woodward Academy, Dutchtown vs. Jones County, and St. Pius vs Decatur.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

Historical records are provided by the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. (ghsfa.org)

The Skinny

The Jones County Greyhounds enter this weeks game on a 6-game win streak. Their losses are by a combined 6 points. The first loss was a rather curios one to Class 2-A Northeast Macon, but they have bounced back as we mentioned previously. The Greyhounds are averaging 44.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 24.7. Quarterback John Richter has thrown for 2,185 yards and 22-TDs. Zion Ragans has been his primary target with 36 receptions for 723 yards and 5-TDs. Javious Bond has shown off his versatility this season as he leads the team in rushing with 544 yards and 9-TDs and has also caught 33 passes for 467 yards and 6-TDs.

The Dutchtown Bulldogs have also won six consecutive games entering this week. The Bulldogs are averaging 18.1 points per game while their defense is allowing just 10.4 points per game. Dutchtown will rely heavily on the run game on Friday night with Jamal Bing, Bryce Clayvon and Amarrion Yarborough.

The big question is can the young Bulldogs slow down an explosive Jones County team. We believe they will be in the game in the first half, but we like the Greyhounds to outrun Dutchtown this week. Jones County by 14.

The Skinny

The Macon County Bulldogs are looking for their second consecutive region title. They are 8-0 for the first time since 1996. The Bulldogs are averaging 143.3 yards through the air and 214.4 yards per game on the ground. The defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 53 times and forced 26 turnovers on the year. Shelquavius Byse leads the team in total tackles while Kenwan Felton and Jace McClendon lead the team in sacks with 16 and 11 respectively. Running back Marlon Mitchell leads the team in rushing with 1,140 yards and 14-TDs.

The Chattahoochee County Panthers are a 1-point loss away from being undefeated. A win by the Panthers would almost certainly force a three-way tie in Region 5. The Cougars are averaging 41.3 points per game while the defense is allowing a 5.7 points per game. The defense has recorded three shutouts on the season. This is the best scoring defense in school history.

We would take the under in terms of total points on this one as we expect this to be a defensive battle. We like the home team, Macon County, this week by a field goal.

The Skinny

The St. Pius Golden Lions have won five straight games entering this week as they search for their ninth region titles in 13 seasons. While Coach Standard has moved on as head coach, the Lions still run the Wing-T offense with precision. They are averaging 31.3 points per game. The defense has been just as good allowing just 10.8 points per game with two shutouts to their credit. The offense is led by southpaw quarterback Alex Prosser who is a capable passer. Running back Jack Tchienchou is tough in between the tackles and is also just as versatile as a receiver out of the backfield.

The Decatur Bulldogs had their hopes of an outright region title derailed last week, but they can still force a three-way tie with a victory on Friday night. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by an average of 40 to 9.5. They’ve also recorded three shutouts on the season. Decatur has a coupe of bruising backs in Marquis Hood and Chapman Smith. Smith is also one of the statistical team leaders on defense.

We expect this game to be closer than last season’s matchup. We like the Lions and the Wing-T this week by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Woodward Academy War Eagles have quietly put together another undefeated season up to this point. Woodward has not allowed more than 14 points in a game this season and has also recorded three shutouts this season. They are allowing just 7.1 points per game, while the offense is averaging 33.8 points per game. The War Eagles are averaging 116.6 yards per game through the air and 149.4 yards per game on the ground. Running back Damari Alston has rushed for over 1,300 yards and 19-TDs. Through 8-games, Woodward has sacked opposing quarterbacks 31 times and forced 12 turnovers.

The Creekside Seminoles are in search of their third region title in four years. The Seminoles have won six consecutive games, with their only loss on the season coming at the hands of Cartersville by a mere 3-points. Creekside is averaging 153.2 yards through the air and 215 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Nyqua Lett has thrown for 1,365 yards and 15-TDs. Lett is also third in the team in rushing behind senior running backs Kamauri Davis, (535 yards, 9-TDs) and Cameron Burch, (454 yards, 10-TDs). Javeon Miller has recorded a team high 20 sacks. The defense has forced 19 turnovers on the season.

We expect for Creekside to try and limit Alston and maybe stack the box to slow him down and force quarterback Jalen Woods to beat them. While we are big fans of Alston and his ability to impact any game, we believe there is something special about this Creekside defense. We like the Seminoles by 5.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 12

It’s hard to think that we have reached the final week of the regular season in Georgia High School Football. This week, all six county teams are in action with only one team playing in county. Cherokee will travel to Milton to try and knock off the top dog in the region, while Etowah will travel to Alpharetta for a chance to clinch a playoff birth. Meanwhile, Woodstock will host Roswell, while Sequoyah will make the trip over to face Centennial. Also in 6-A River Ridge will look to close out the season strong as they travel to Cambridge and Creekview will look to improve their region seeding as they travel to Johns Creek.

Bundle up if you are goin out on Friday. It’s going to be a little nippy come Friday night!

The Skinny

The Milton Eagles will look to clinch their fourth consecutive region title this week as the Cherokee Warriors come calling. Last week the Eagles put up 62 first half points as they cruised to victory over Woodstock. It was the most points they’ve scored all season. Milton has now won seven straight games this season and has now won 22 consecutive region games. The Eagles offense is averaging 55.2 points per game in region play to this point while their defense is allowing 20.5 points per game.

The Cherokee Warriors return from the bye week after securing at least the No. 3 seed in region play. The Warriors have won three of their last four games, but have needed late game heroics in their last two games. The Warriors are averaging  193.9 points per game on the ground and 73.8 yards per ground on the ground. On defense, Cherokee will rely on Tyler Goddard, Javon Hobson, Toby Thompson and Kyan Simmons to try and contain the Eagles potent offense.

With a win this week coupled with a Roswell loss, the Warriors would claim the No. 1 seed. That is a tall task to ask of the Warriors against a Milton team that boasts several Division-I level players. We like the Eagles by 24 this week.

The Skinny

The Alpharetta Raiders almost pulled off a stunning upset over region foe Roswell last week. The Raiders will now need to turn their focus to Etowah as they hope to clinch a playoff game. The Raiders have turned to freshman quarterback Landon Walker in the wake of an injury to starter Ben Guthrie. From all accounts that we have received, the future is bright for the young quarterback. In his first start against Cherokee, Walker threw for 170 yards and a touchdown and also tossed another one last week as he now has 3-TD passes on the season.

The Etowah Eagles will look to bounce back from their heartbreaking loss last Thursday. Despite their record, the Eagles are one win away from clinching a playoff spot. Sophomore running back Elijah Williams has come alive as of late. He leads the Eagles in rushing yards and attempts. Prior to Thursday’s game, Washington had rushed for 582 yards and 3-TDs. The Eagles will mix in the pass to keep teams honest so don’t be surprised if receiver Will Curcio gets involved this week as well. The Eagles defense will need another great performance from their front line of Aldin Datis, Ryan Lee and Jadon Maddox if they are going to have a chance to win on the road.

We don’t know the status of Ben Guthrie, but as we mentioned, Landon Walker is more than capable to handle the load. Expect Etowah to try to rattle whichever quarterback takes the snaps this week. We just don’t know if Etowah can score enough this week to down the Raiders. We like Alpharetta by 10.

The Skinny

The Woodstock Wolverines will wrap up one of the more challenging schedules in Cherokee County this season as they host the Roswell Hornets. It has been a long season for the Wolverines, but they have shown improvement and character throughout. There are many reasons to believe the future is bright for Woodstock and many of them start with quarterback Dan Comeau, who has thrown for over 1,300 yards and 6-TDs on the season. Senior Brady Williams has made an impact for Woodstock on both sides of the ball as he leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and is one of the leaders in the secondary at safety.

The Roswell Hornets can wrap up the No. 2 seed and a first round home playoff game with a win this week. The Hornets will certainly need a better performance than they had lat week as they had to scratch and claw to get a victory over rival Alpharetta. Quarterback Robbie Roper has now thrown for 2,054 yards and 24-TDs on the season. We’ve talked about the many weapons that Roper has surrounding him at receiver including Ethan Nation, Zeke Moore, Shaun Spence and  Ethan Crite. Roswell is averaging 33 points per game this season and allowing 19.7

We expect a bounce back performance from the Hornets this week as they visit Woodstock. Hornets by 30.

The Skinny

The Cambridge Bears have certainly made a statement this season as they remain in the mix for their first region title in school history. The Bears offense is averaging 32.1 points per game which is the second best in school history, while their defense has allowed 15.6 points per game. That’s good enough for the best scoring defense in their 10-year history. Offensively, senior quarterback Zach Harris, tuning back Christian Isabor and receiver Will Taylor lead the team in statistical categories.

The River Ridge Knights put a real scare into Johns reek this past Friday night, but could not hold off the Gladiators last charge. River Ridge has been without leading rusher Amhere Morrison the past few games, but Tyler Carter and Gabe Bolden have stepped up to take some of the load off quarterback Carson Lathem. The Knights are still formidable with the aforementioned Lathem and receivers Andrew Bingham and Jackson Head. Head made a few highlight reel catches this past Friday night, including a leap from about the 5 yard line into the end zone. Defensively, Brian Bradley continues to be a problem for opposing offenses. He spent much of last Friday in the Gladiators backfield and also blocked a PAT and got his hands on a punt as well. He has a motor that just does not quit!

It will be a tough test for River Ridge, as they have been seemingly eliminated from post season play. Don’t expect Cambridge to feel sorry for River Ridge, but it won’t be a runaway for either team. We like the Bears at home by a field goal.

The Skinny

The Johns Creek Gladiators showed their resiliency last week as they came back from a 22-point half time deficit to defeat River Ridge and keep their region title hopes alive. While we did not see Alex Cunningham on defense, Sam Oppenheimer and Thaxton Gallagher were making plays all over the field in the second half. On offense it was Kyle Durham showing off his decision making ability finding open receives and scrambling when he had to to keep drives alive. Prior to last week’s game, Durham had thrown for 1,416 yards. Durham added 4-TD passes last week to bring his total to 20 on the season. Running back Tylan Johnson found pay dirt twice last week to bring his total touchdowns to 9 on the season.

The Creekview Grizzlies will look to close out their regular season on a three game win streak and improve their playoff position. Last week, the Grizzlies defense pitched their third shutout of the season and second in as many weeks. The Creekview defense is allowing just 9.6 point per game this season. They’ve sacked opposing quarterbacks over 17 times this season and forced 15 turnovers. Quarterback Mason Hicks continues to impress with his efficiency, throwing for 1,224 yards and 18-TDs. Running back Tyler Stevens added 3 rushing TDs to his account last week, bringing his season total to 12.

The Gladiators will have their hands full trying to figure out the Grizzlies front seven. Not many teams have been successful doing that this season. But then agin, not many teams have been able to slow down the Gladiator offense. We like Johns Creek at home by 5.

The Skinny

The Centennial Knights will close out their season on Friday with a visit from Sequoyah. The Knights have been competitive in many games this season, but seem to be about a year away. There is a good nucleus on this team for coach Sean O’Sullivan. It starts up front with tackle Daniel Calhoun who has already received several Power-5 offers. But that’s not the only reason the future looks bright for Centennial. Quarterbacks Carter Wit and Tyler Laskaris have combined to throw for 1,127 yards and 10-TDs. Meanwhile, Wit and Nathaniel Webester have combined to rush for 1,024 yards and 6-TDs on the ground.  All three are underclassmen. The Knights defense have forced 11-turnovers on the season.

The Sequoyah Chiefs will also look to close their season out on a high note. The Chiefs were locked in a battle with Riverwood last week, but came up short. The Chiefs defense performed well last week, but will need to dial up a similar performance to keep the Knights quarterbacks in check. We are sure that ball security will be a point of emphasis for the Chiefs this week. Excpect for quarterback Matthew Traynor to continue to lead the way for Sequoyah as he is the team’s leading rusher as well as passer. He has very capable running mates with him in the Wing-T including Peyton Lucas, Jack Piskorz and Jackson Hancock.

The Knights struggled last year against the Wing-T. If they can move the ball and force the Chiefs in to unfavorable field position, they should have chance to win this game. While both teams want to go out on a high note, we like the Chiefs by 13.

TFR Week-11 GHSA Football Poll

Happy Halloween! In Week-11, there were definitely some tricks and treats handed out. Our GHSA Football Poll this week reflects some of the happenings this past week. Class 7A saw Collins Hill continue their mastery of the season as they downed Mill Creek to claim the Region-8 title. Mill Creek drops two spots while the rest of the poll remains relatively unchanged. Class 6A remained unchanged this week.

In Class 5A, Whitewater is in at No. 10 for the first time this season, as Decatur lost to Southwest DeKalb, which dropped them from the poll. Calhoun drops two spots after a 7 point loss to Cartersville on the road. Class 4A might have seen the biggest upset of the weekend as North Oconee beat previously No. 1 ranked Jefferson to claim the Region 8 title. The win has the Titans up to No. 8 this week, while Jefferson falls to 4. Carver Columbus is the new No. 1 team this week in 4A.

Both Class 3A and Class 2A remained unchanged this week. Class A-Public has a new No. 10 team as the Trion Bulldogs make their debut in the poll this week. Washington-Wilkes is out of the poll after a loss to Commerce. Meanwhile in Class A-Private, Holy Innocents’ beat region rival Wesleyan and is up to No. 6 this week, while Wesleyan falls to No. 8.

Cherokee County Football Previews – Week 11

We are down to the final two weeks of high school football in Cherokee County as teams continue to vie for playoff seeding. The Cherokee Warriors are off this week but all of the other five teams are in action this week. This week’s slate of games includes Woodstock traveling to Milton, Etowah hosting Forsyth Central, Sequoyah hosting Riverwood, Creekview hosting Centennial, and River Ridge hosting Johns Creek.

The Skinny

The Milton Eagles will look to solidify their hold on first place in the region as they host the Woodstock Wolverines. Last week, the Eagles held off Roswell to win their 6th consecutive game. During that streak, Milton is averaging 42.8 points per game. Quarterback Devin Farrell has thrown for 1,273 and 16-TDs and has completed 68% of his passes. Jordan McDonald leads the team in rushing with 658 yards and 8-TDs. The Eagles are averaging 171.8 yards per game through the air and 220.5 yards per game on the ground. Defensively, A.J. Crawford leads the team in tackles for loss with 18 tackles for loss, including 7.5 sacks. Junior safety Robert Billings leads the secondary with 4 interception. Milton has forced 17 turnovers this season.

The Woodstock Wolverines will have to have a short memory after an emotional loss to rival Etowah last week. Woodstock did find some success on the ground with sophomore running back C.J. London. The Wolverines have had most of their success through the air and on the arm of quarterback Dan Comeau, who’s thrown for over 1,300 yards and 6-TDs. Woodstock’s defense has struggled a bit this season, but they were able to come up with two big turnovers last week. On the season, they’ve forced 7 turnovers.

Woodstock looked much improved last week, showing an ability to establish a bit of a run game. However, Milton looks is too talented this week. We like the Eagles by 38.

The Skinny

The Etowah Eagles will look to build off of the momentum from their victory on Friday night. Etowah is steadily developing more of an identity on offense behind a gritty offensive line and a budding star at running back. Elijah Washington has been a workhorse over the past few weeks. The sophomore has rushed for 590 yards and 3-TDs on the season. The Eagles will still be reliant on their defense to wreak havoc all over the field. We also can’t forget about kicker Carson Allen who has an explosive leg.

The Forsyth Central Bulldogs have not had much success since walloping Northview back in Week-1. The Bulldogs recorded 42 first half points in route to their biggest win since beating Clarkston by 64 back in 2018. Central has a stable of running backs led by Patrick Haertel and Malachi McElroy who have combined to rush for 761 yards and 5-TDs. They will feature an offense run out of a traditional I-formation and the running backs are physical, tough runners. Defensively, expect for the Bulldogs to use three down lineman and bring in an edge rusher or two to try to put pressure on Bohannon and try to stymie the run game.

Points have been hard to come by for the Bulldogs this season. They will be facing another stout defense. If Central can force a few turnovers, they could be in position to win their second game this season. However, we believe Elijah Washington and the Eagles are in a groove. Etowah by 6.

The Skinny

The Sequoyah Chiefs will look to bounce break from a heartbreaking loss against county rival River Ridge last week. While the Chiefs have been eliminated from post season contention, they can play the role of spoiler this week. Matthew Traynor continues to lead the way for Sequoyah on offense. Last week, he went over the 100-yard mark in rushing. And while we believe that the Sequoyah offense can move the ball again this week, the defense will be under a lot of pressure. They are allowing 21.5 points per game. Carter Sandt, Jackson Hancock and Avery Born will need to have big games in the Chiefs are going to have success on Friday.

The Riverwood Raiders are locked up in a three-way tie for first place and can win the region if they win out and Johns Creek loses another game. But rest assured all of their attention will be on the task at hand as they visit Skip Pope stadium. Quarterback Avery Smith makes the Raiders go. He’s thrown for over 2,400 yards and has 24-TD passes. Smith has also rushed for over 650 yards on the season. The Raiders are averaging just over 300 yards per game through the air and around 190 yards per game on the ground. On defense, they are allowing a respectable 17.5 points per game.

The key to victory for Sequoyah will certainly depend on if they can keep Smith in check. Playing at home should help, but Smith is the best player in Region-7 this season. We like the Raiders by 20.

The Skinny

The Creekview Grizzlies kept their playoff hopes intact last week as they shutout Chattahoochee. The Grizzlies 52 point outburst was the 6th highest point output for the Grizzlies all time. Creekview is averaging 32.5 points per game while their defense is allowing 10.8 points per game with two shutouts to their credit this season. Quarterback Mason Hicks has continued to impress, now with over 1,100 yards passing and 17-TDs on the season completing 60% of his passes. He’s had the benefit of having Tyler Stevens in the backfield. Stevens has rushed for 627 yards and 9-TDs and also added 23 receptions for 251 yards and 4-TDs as a receiver. Perhaps the biggest surprise for the Grizzlies this season has been Tristan Summers who leads the team in receiving with 26 receptions for 315 yards and 4-TDs.

The Centennial Knights continue to be competitive, but are perhaps a year away from making some real noise in the region. The Knights have put up 27 points in consecutive weeks, but have only been able to hold two teams under 27 points this season. Centennial will do most of their damage on the ground as they are averaging 157 yards per game rushing while just 99 yards per game passing. They have used a couple of quarterbacks, Tyler Laskaris and Carter Wit. Wit is more of a run threat and is second on the team in rushing behind Nathaniel Webster. Expect for the Knights to run behind big Daniel Calhoun to try to shorten the game this week.

This could turn into a real smash mouth battle. Creekview cannot afford to take Centennial lightly. They have the ability to knock off the Grizzlies if they can control the clock. However, Creekview’s defense has been one of the best in the region; and we like them again this week. Grizzlies by 18.

The Skinny

The River Ridge Knights kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling win over Sequoyah last Friday. The Knights were again without their star running back Amhere Morrison, but found a way to win. River Ridge has used a few backs to help in the run game including Andrew Bingham, Gabe Bolden, Tyler Carter and quarterback Carson Lathem among others. But in Morrison’s absence, Jackson Head has been  the primary receiver, scoring two touchdowns last week to bring his season total to 8. Head leads the Knights in receptions and receiving yards as well.

The Johns Creek Gladiators find themselves tied atop the region standings with Cambridge and Riverwood. Currently, the Gladiators hold the tie-breaker, but really need to win out and need a Cambridge loss to clinch first place. Johns Creek is averaging 36.2 points per game and is doing it with a balanced attack with 185.9 yards through the air and 187.9 yards on the ground. Quarterback Kyle Durham has thrown for 1,416 yards and 16-TDs while Tylan Johnson has rushed for 1,104 yards and 7-TDs. The Gladiators are allowing 22.6 points per game and have sacked opposing quarterbacks 15 times this season while also forcing 15 turnovers.

The Knights were able to get by without Morrison last week, but if he doesn’t play this week, we believe they will have a hard time against a pretty good Johns Creek defense. We believe this will be a little closer than some might thing…with or without Morrison playing for River Ridge. We like the Gladiators by a touchdown.

Eight Greats Around the State – Georgia High School Football Previews – Week 11 – Part II

We are down to the last two weeks of the regular season and playoff races are really starting to heat up. In this week’s GHSA Football Preview we take a look at a few games that either have region title implications, or where the right to host a home playoff game is on the line. Matchups include Mill Creek vs. Collins Hill, Coffee vs. Warner Robins, Wesleyan vs. Holy Innocents’, and Douglas County vs. Rome.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Mill Creek Hawks are 8-0 for the first time since 2016, which is also the last time the Hawks won a region title. They can stake their claim to another region title if they win on Friday night. The Hawks come into this week averaging 36.7 points per game while allowing 10.6. Quarterback Hayden Clark has thrown for 1,270 yards and 10-TDs, while Donovan Journey has rushed for 665 yards and 12-TDs. Caleb Downs leads the team in total tackles while Jayvon Henderson is tops on the team in interceptions with 4. As a team, Mill Creek has forced 20 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 25 times.

The Collins Hill Eagles are the top team in the state of Georgia by most accounts, regardless of classification. Collins Hill has passed every test with flying colors this season and is looking for their second consecutive region title in their regular season finale. The Eagles are averaging 38.6 points per game while allowing a paltry 4.8. They’ve shut out five of their opponents and no team from Georgia has scored more than 10 points against them this season. The Eagles have had success even while star Travis Hunter has been sidelined the last few weeks. Quarterback Sam Horn has thrown for 2,144 yards and 21-TDs and is completing 70% of his passes. Meanwhile Spenser Anderson and Ryan Stephens have combined to rush for 805 yards and 9-TDs. Hunter is still tops on the team in receiving with 691 yards and 5-TDs while Cam Pedro has caught 40 passes for 536 yards and 5-TDs.

This might be the best game in the state this week, at least in terms of hype. Mill Creek will have to execute a sound defensive game plan to keep Horn and the Eagles at bay. We believe that’s possible, but not probable. Collins Hill by 8.

The Skinny

The Coffee Trojans have won consecutive games after dropping their first game of the season to Ware County three weeks ago. The Trojans are a relatively balanced offense, averaging 163 yards per game through the air and 168.8 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Justin Swords has thrown for 1,193 yards and 9-TDs. His top receiver this season has been Maurice Turner with 27 receptions for 374 yards and 4-TDs in only six games this season. It has been running back by committee for the Trojans, as four backs have over 240 yards each this season. Brandon High leads the defense in total tackles (82) and sacks (6). Coffee has sacked opposing quarterbacks 26 times this season.

The Warner Robins Demons exorcised their own demons, bouncing back from their first loss of the season and defeating Wayne County by 56. Warner Robins is averaging 52.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 22.1. Christon Lane has now thrown for 1,678 yards and 22-TDs, while Malcolm Brown has rushed for 1,113 yards and 16-TDs. Daveon Walker leads the Demons in receiving with 43 receptions for 868 yards and 10-TDs. Warner Robins has forced 16 turnovers this season.

The winner of this game will earn the second seed and host a home playoff game, barring and surprises in the final week. We believe Warner Robins is refocused and we don’t expect a letdown this week. Demons by 21.

The Skinny

The Wesleyan Wolves are winners of their last four games and have not lost a region game in 10 contests. Wesleyan is averaging 30.5 points per game while the defense is allowing 10.3. The bulk of the Wolves offense has come by way of the air, as they are averaging 208 yards per game passing and 116 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Jet Miller has thrown for 1,570 yards and 15-TDs. Thomas Cook, Reed Purcell and Jamie Tremble have combined to catch 74 passes for 908 yards and 8-TDs. Kicker Brooks Sturgeon is averaging just over 39 yards per punt and is 10/13 on field goals and has connected on a 50-yarder this season.

Holy Innocents has won their last five games and are in search of their second region title in three seasons. The Bears are averaging 42 points per game while allowing 13.5 points. They have shutout two opponents on the season and have held three more teams to just a touchdown. Holy Innocents will rely heavily on the run to set the tone for their offense.

We expect the winner of this game to but crowned region title, unless there is an unexpected result in the final week of the season. We won’t expect a defensive struggle, but we do like the homesteading Wolves to win a shootout by 10.

The Skinny

There is a logjam atop region 5-7A and the Douglas County Tigers find themselves right in the thick of things. The Tigers bounced back from a loss to South Paulding two weeks ago with a win over Dalton. Douglas County is averaging 33.8 points per game while allowing 20.8. Quarterback Sire Hardaway has thrown for 1,130 yards and 9-TDs, while LaTrelle Murrell has rushed for 826 yards and 12-TDs. Linebacker Shakai woods leads the team in total tackles while Zachariah Keith leads the team in sacks. Overall, the Tigers have sacked opposing quarterbacks 27 times and intercepted 16 passes on the season.

The Rome Wolves have won their last four games as they face perhaps their biggest obstacle to a region title left on their schedule. On the season, Rome is averaging 30 points per game and is allowing 16. Through their first seven games, quarterback Reece Fountain has thrown for 1,600 yards and 13 TDs. During that same span, Martel Height and DeKaylon Daniel have combined to catch 70 passes for 935 yards. In their two losses Rome has allowed 34 points in each of those games. However in their six wins, only once have they allowed a team to score more than one touchdown.

Both teams have shown they can be explosive, but this game should come down to defense. We don’t expect a lot of points this week, but we do expect Rome to win on the road. Wolves by 7.
