The Skinny

The Commerce Tigers will travel down to Ocilla to take on the No. 1 ranked Irwin County Indians. Last week it was quarterback Zach Smith (134 passing yards, 2-TDs), wide receiver Jamorri Colson (111 yards, 2-TDs) and running back Jamal Paulk (67 yards, 1-TD). On the season, Irwin County is averaging 43.5 points per game, while their defense is allowing only 7.2 points per game. The Irwin County defense has recorded 4 shutouts on the season. The Commerce Tigers dropped their last two regular season games, but did go in to Mitchell County last week and got the 2-point victory to advance to the quarterfinals. The Tigers are in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years. On the season, Commerce is averaging 34.9 points per game, while the defense is allowing 12.6 points per game. While we think those are great numbers, we don’t believe that the Tigers will have enough defense to slow down D.J. Lundy and the rest of the Indians. We like Irwin County by 14.

The Skinny

The Greene County Tigers are back in the quarterfinals after missing the playoffs entirely in 2017. Greene County is in the midst of an 8-game win streak. During the regular season, dual threat quarterback C’darius Kelley led the team with 1,449 yards passing and 930 yards rushing. Kelley accounted for 28 total TDs. The Pelham Hornets will be next up for the Tigers. Pelham is undefeated coming into this game, but had to come from behind last week to get past ECI. The Hornets have a host of underclassmen that provide significant minutes and contribute to the success the team has had. But last week, it was senior Javoris Williams who led the way with 155 yards rushing and 2-TDs. Junior receiver Jordan Bennett went over the 100-yard mark receiving with 104 yards and 2-TDs through the air. We expect that Greene County will be the toughest opponent that the Hornets have faced this season. We like the Tigers this week by a field goal in a mild upset.

The Skinny

There is an old saying that “the third time is a charm”. The Schley County Wildcats are hoping that is the case, as they will face the Marion County Eagles for the 3rd time this season. Marion County won the first two matchups 28-7 and 21-6. Last week against Montgomery County, Marion’s Trice McCannon passed for 138 yards and rushed for 223 yards with 4-total TDs. The 223-yard rushing performance put McCannon over the 1,000-yard mark on the season. As a team, the Eagles have rushed for over 3,200 yards on the season, led by Travon Matthews with 1,540 yards. The Schley County Wildcats had another big game on the ground. As a team, the Wildcats rushed fro 321 yards and scored 6-rushing TDs. Schley has rushed for over 3,000 yards this season. Tra Sampson and Zamon Ross have led the way on the ground this season, with the two backs combining for 2,097 yards and 30-TDs. On the season, Schley is averaging 278 rushing yards per game. In their two losses, Marion is only allowing them 137 yards per game. We think this game will be closer than the first two, but we like Marion by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Clinch County Panthers will log some 550+ miles (round trip) this week as the travel out to Mt. Zion Carroll. Last year it was Clinch who ended the Eagles season in the semifinals. Mt. Zion will be looking to return the favor. The Eagles are in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years. A win would give them their second consecutive trip to the semifinals. The Eagles rely primarily on the run, but Iaan Cousin is an effective passer in certain situations. Clinch County has won seven straight games since a loss back in mid-September to No. 1 ranked Irwin County. Clinch is averaging 36.7 points per game, while the defense is allowing 13.4 points per game. Both Clinch and Mt. Zion have a common opponent in Dooly County. Both teams beat the Bobcats; Clinch by 34 and Mt. Zion by 21. We think that Trezman Marshall and the Clinch County Panthers will leave Carroll County with a win. We like Clinch County by 9.

TFR GHSA 2-A-Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Our GHSA 2-A-Quarterfinal playoff previews are listed below. Defending state champ Hapeville was knocked out of the playoffs last week by the Callaway Cavaliers. So the field is even more wide open as we head into round-3. This preview features matchups between Fitzgerald-Rabun County, HeardCounty-Dublin, Rockmart-Jefferson County, and Washington County-Callaway. . Congratulations to these final 8 teams on a successful season. Best of luck to you all as you compete this Friday.

The Skinny

The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes will journey to Tiger, GA to take on the Rabun County Wildcats. Fitzgerald is in the quarterfinals for the ninth time in eleven years. Last week, the Purple Canes got a solid performance from the defense as they forced 3 turnovers, including an interception returned for a TD. On the season, Fitzgerald is averaging 31.75 points per game. They come into this game winning six of their last seven games. Meanwhile, Rabun County has not lost a game since a 3-point week-1 defeat at the hands of Bremen. Rabun County is led by Freshman QB Gunner Stockton who has passed for 2,727 yards and rushed for 677 yards with 49 total TDs. Last week against Chattooga, he had 299 all-purpose yards.  Brison Beck leads the team in rushing and also had a big game last week with 182 yards and 2-TDs.  Rabun County is averaging 48.4 points per game. Fitzgerald will need another big performance from the defense. They spent plenty of time in the Swainsboro backfield last week. However, we think it will be Rabun County and the freshman quarterback that prevails. We like the Wildcats by 13.

The Skinny

The Dublin Fighting Irish are back in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2011. As we’ve mentioned before, the Irish have used the Wing-T to power their offense this season. Defensively Dublin is surrendering 7.6 points per game. Their only loss is a 3-point defeat to Brooks County. The Irish will play host to the Heard County Braves. Heard County got off to a bit of a slow start early in the season, but have rebounded nicely and wave won 9 consecutive games. Defensively, Heard County is allowing 13.3 points per game. We think that this game will be close at the half, but we like for the Dublin run game to wear down the Heard County defense, we like Dublin by 12.

The Skinny

This game between Jefferson County and Rockmart has the potential billing of a state title game. Unfortunately, this matchup will take place in the quarterfinals. Rockmart got big games last week from Juke Boozer, Zabrion Whatley, and Markus Smith. Rockmart has really dominated most of its competition this season. The Jackets are averaging 47 points per game, while their defense is allowing 7 points per game on the season. The twelve point margin of victory against Bremen was the closest game of the season for Rockmart since their Week-1 6-point win over Cedartown. Jefferson County is making their second quarterfinals appearance in four years. Jaden Jenkins led the Warriors last week with 268 yards and 1-TD. On the season, he has rushed for 1,977 yards and 29-TDs. The Jefferson County offense is averaging 34.8 points per game this season. We think they might need all of those points and then some against Rockmart. We like the Jackets by 9 in a shootout.

The Skinny

The Callaway Cavaliers will be at home as they take on Washington County this week. Callaway knocked off defending state champion, Hapeville last week, in a game that they dominated from start to finish. Tank Bigsby led the way for Callaway rushing for 4-TDs in the victory. On the season, the Cavaliers are averaging 33.6 points per game. Their only two losses are to Troup and Heard County, both of whom are still alive in the playoffs. The Washington County Golden Hawks have won four of their last five games. They are averaging 36 points per game, while their defense is allowing 19.8 points per game.  The electrifying Dyquan Bloodsaw leads the way with over 1,526 yards and 23 total TDs. He has also picked off 3-passes on defense this season.  We think this game is nip and tuck. We expect for Bloodsaw and Bigsby to put on a show, but we believe Callaway edges Washington County by the slimmest of margins…call it a 1-point victory for the Cavaliers.

TFR GHSA 3-A-Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Our GHSA 3-A-Quarterfinal playoff previews are listed below. This preview features matchups between Monroe Area-Pierce County, Cedar Grove-Benedictine, Westminster-Peach County, and Jenkins-Calhoun. The Skinny

Monroe Area will travel down to Blackshear to take on the Pierce County Bears. Monroe Area is led by dual-threat quarterback Chandler Byron, who last week, passed for 111 yards, rushed for 244 yards and scored 5 total TDs. As Byron has gone, so has the Monroe Area offense this season as he has generated 3,836 yards of total offense. The Purple Hurricanes defense has also played very well this season. They are allowing 11 points per game. Monroe Area has outscored their opponents 518 to 132 on the season, so if the Pierce County Bears are going to get the win, they will need to bear (no pun intended) the onslaught that typically occurs early and often. Pierce County was led last week by Jermaine Brewton who passed for 153 yards and 1 TD and John Jones who rushed for 109 yards and 2-TDs. On the season the Bears are averaging 43.4 points per game. Both Brewton and Jones have been the statistical leaders for Pierce County. We think that Byron will just be too much to handle for Pierce County. We like Monroe Area by 10 this Friday.

The Skinny

The Cedar Grove Saints will make their fourth consecutive trip to the quarterfinals. They will face the Benedictine Cadets. Neither team has lost a game to a class AAA opponent this season. The Saints boast the nation’s No. 1 wide receiver prospect in Jadon Haselwood. But they are not just a one man show. Austin Smith and Kendall Boney have combined to pass for over 2,100 yards and 29-TDs, while Robert Jones leads the team in rushing with 870 yards and 10-TDs. Haselwood and Rashard Jordan have combined for over 1,400 yards receiving and 18 receiving TDs. On defense for the Saints, Dante Walker leads the way with 8.5 sacks, while Haselwood has picked off 3 passes in the secondary. Meanwhile, down in Savannah, Benedictine has taken much of the success they’ve had in AA and continued that as the moved to Class AAA play this season. Backs Rico Powers (133 yards, 3 total TDs) and Jakeen Harris (143 yards, 3-TDs) lead the offensive attack in last weeks win over Westside, Macon. Benedictine is averaging 41.4 points per game. While the Cadets defense is allowing only 10.5 points per game. Cedar Grove is one of our picks to be in the state title game, we like the Saints by a touchdown on the road over Benedictine this week.

The Skinny

The Westminster Wildcats find themselves back in the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive season. Last week, they picked up their second win of the season against Greater Atlanta Christian. Westminster has been up and down this season. In their 8 wins, their offense is averaging 40.1 points per game, in their 4 losses, they are only averaging 11.7 points per game. Their opponent this week is Peach County. The Trojans have ended Westminster’s season in back to back years. Peach County is back in the quarterfinals, a place where they certainly feel comfortable. As we’ve mentioned before, there is not the same star power in terms of top ranked recruits, but the Trojans are well coached and still a very talented team. Quarterback Jaydon Gibson has passed for 1,704 yards and 17-TDs, while Kapien Everett has rushed for 557 yards and 12-TDs to lead the Trojans ground game. Last week, junior, Tijah Woolfolk rushed for 156 yards and 3-TDs. Woolfolk has 457 yards rushing in 4 games this season. We think that Peach will be able to control the line of scrimmage in this matchup, but this won’t be a runaway; Trojans by 3.

The Skinny

The Jenkins Warriors are in the quarterfinals for the third time in school history. They are one of two teams still alive from Region-3. (The other is Benedictine.) The Warriors will travel to Calhoun to take on perennial power, Calhoun. Jenkins is led by Jeremy Smith on offense. He’s well over the 1,000 yard mark rushing on the season and has 9-TDs. Meanwhile, Calhoun has made it to the quarterfinals for eleven consecutive seasons. The Jackets have been playing at a high level all season. They shook off a slow first half start against Ridgeland in week one and really haven’t looked back since. The Jackets are winners of their last 24 games. On the season, they are averaging 46.4 points per game, while their defense is only allowing 7.1 points per game. Their smallest margin of victory this season was last week’s 15-point win over Lovett. Will the long bus ride to Jenkins put them behind the 8-ball? We think so, along with Calhoun’s defense. We like the Jackets by 20.

TFR GHSA 4-A-Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Our GHSA 4-A-Quarterfinal playoff previews are listed below. This preview features matchups between Mary Persons-Marist, Baldwin-Cartersville, Eastside-Blessed Trinity, and Cairo-Troup. Congratulations to these final 8 teams on a successful season. Best of luck to you all as you compete this Friday.

As always, thanks for reading. Please feel free to contact me if there are any errors.

The Skinny

The Marist War Eagles avenged an early season loss to St. Pius last week to advance to the quarterfinals for the sixth time in seven years. Marist was led by quarterback Connor Cigelski and WR/DB Kyle Hamilton. Cigelskie rushed for 155 yards and 2-TDs, while Hamilton added 76 rushing yards and 1-TDs. The Marist offense is averaging 34.7 points per game on the season; while their defense is only giving up 10.8 points per game. Mary Persons put up some big numbers last week against Woodward Academy. J.T. Hartage passed for 255 yards and 2-TDs, while Quen Wilson had 162 yards on 13 carries with 3-TDs. Mary Persons is averaging 49.2 points per game while the defense is allowing 11.3 The Bulldogs will have home field advantage, but will that be enough to get past a stingy Marist defense. We think Marist’s schedule has been a little tougher than Mary Persons. So we don’t think Marist will be intimidated by the Bulldogs record or athletes; but we still like the Bulldogs to win a close game. Mary Persons by 2.

The Skinny

The Cartersville Hurricanes have fared very well in their first season after the Trevor Lawrence era. Tee Webb has passed for 2,466 yards and 32-TDs on the season. Last week, he had 203 passing yards and 4-TDs. Marcus Gary (1,179 yards, 15-TDs) is perhaps one of the most underrated backs in Class 4-A. But more impressive than Cartersville’s offense has been their defense. They are allowing 6.1 points per game on the season, and in the first two games of the playoffs, they are right on pace, surrendering only 7 points per game. The Baldwin Braves have continued to surprise us this season. They dropped their first 5 games, but have been on fire as of late, winning their last 7-contests. Perhaps the folks in Baldwin are not surprised at all. We’d imagine the Braves and their fans expect to be alive at this point in the season. The Braves are in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. Home field advantage should help Baldwin, but we think the Hurricanes will blow into Baldwin and get the win this week. We like Cartersville by 15.

The Skinny

The defending state champs will visit Covington this week as they take on Region-4 No. 1 and state rank No. 5 Eastside Eagles. Coach Troy Hoff has engineered one of the best seasons in Eastside history. Last week, it was quarterback Noah Cook who led the way for the Eagles, with 231 yards passing and 3-TDs. If Eastside is going to tie their deepest playoff run in school history, they will need to slow down Blessed Trinity’s Steele Chambers. Chambers has gotten most of the work out of the backfield, as an injury has sidelined his backfield mate, Elijah Green. Blessed Trinity comes into the game winners of their last 18 games dating back to last season. They are averaging 37.3 points a game on offense, while their defense, led by Chambers, J.D. Bertrand, J.R. Bivens, and Quinton Reese are only giving up 9.6 points per game. We think Eastside will give BT a heck of a ball game on Friday. Sharp Stadium should be electric. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles upset the defending state champs, but for the record, we like Blessed Trinity by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Troup Tigers will take their fast pace offence on the road again this week in hopes of make it to the semi-finals for the first time since 2001. Kobe Hudson, a first year starter at QB, has passed for 3,007 yards and 28-TDs on the season. Last week, he threw for 201 yards and rushed for 127 yards. Hudson accounted for 5-TDs.  The Troup defense is led by Alabama commit King Mwikuta and Andy Boykin, as the duo help lead a defense that is allowing 18.6 points per game. They held high-powered Pickens to 14 points last week. The host Cairo Syrupmakers are back in the quarterfinals for the 2nd time in 3 years. Last week, Cairo was led by quarterback Robert Matthew Peters added 101 yards through the air and 91 yards on the ground with 3 rushing TDs. Tay Solomon added 82 yards on 11 carries. . The Cairo defense is allowing 10.3 points per game. Cairo has won 10 straight games, but we think that Troup might be the most athletic bunch they’ve seen this season. Like many other games around the state, rain could be a factor. We like Troup this week in a mild upset by a touchdown.

TFR GHSA 5-A-Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Our GHSA 5-A-Quarterfinal playoff previews are listed below. This preview features matchups between Bainbridge-Buford, Stockbridge-Carrollton, Dutchtown-Rome, and Warner Robins-Clarke Central. The Skinny

Bainbridge will make the 275 mile trip to Northeast Georgia this week to take on the Buford Wolves. Bainbridge is in the quarterfinals for the second time in 4 years. Last week, the Bearcats got 237 yards through the air from quarterback Quayde Hawkins to help them knock off Wayne County. On the season, Bainbridge is now averaging 22.4 points per game on offense while the defense is allowing 16.5 points per game. The Buford Wolves knocked off Kell last week and are looking to get back to the semi-finals for the 12thconsecutive season. Since week-5, the Wolves have won seven consecutive games. University of Texas commit Derrian Brown led the Wolves last week with 81 yards rushing and 3 total TDs. The Buford defense has been hot as of late, allowing only 12.4 points per game points per game, but they’ve been even better during their current win streak, as they are only allowing 4.8 points per game. We think Bainbridge has had a great run, but we like Buford this week by 13.

The Skinny

The Carrollton Trojans are one of two teams from Region-7 that are still alive in the quarterfinals. Last week the Trojans got past Loganville courtesy of 135 rushing yards and 2-TDs from Brandon Marenco. The Trojans defense limited Loganville to 19 net rushing yards on the game. Carrollton boasts a couple of the best underclassmen linebackers in the state in Kevin Swint and Chass Chambliss. Against Loganville, the duo combined for 10.5 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Like Carrollton, the Stockbridge Tigers are one of two teams from Region 4 that is still alive in the quarterfinals. Also like Carrollton, the Tigers have relied primarily on the ground game this season as they are averaging 234.8 yards per game on the ground. Last week Markell Ramsey rushed for a season high 160 yards and 2- TDs in the victory over New Hampstead. Stockbridge is only allowing 10.7 points per game on defense this season. The Trojans are 4-1 away from the friendly confines of Carrollton, with their only loss on the road to Rome. We like Carrollton on the road to edge Stockbridge by 4 this week in a low scoring contest.

The Skinny

We think this game might be worthy of a state title match up. Last week the Dutchtown Bulldogs were led by quarterback Arendez Fedd, who threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for another in the victory over Griffin. The Bulldogs have been dominant on defense this season, allowing an astounding 5.3 points per game on defense. In our opinion, this will be the best defense that Rome has faced to date. But the Rome Wolves have been able to put up points in bunches. They are averaging 52.3 points per game this season. Jamious Griffin went over the 6,000 yard rushing mark for his career in the victory. The Wolves seem to be able to answer the bell, no matter who comes calling. We think the Bulldogs will get a boost from playing at home. We also expect the Bulldogs to limit some of Rome’s big play capability, and the weather will probably still play a factor. Yet in spite of all of that, we still like Rome in a close game by 10.

The Skinny

It has been 21 years since the Clarke Central Gladiators and Warner Robins Demons have faced off. They will battle this week for the right to play in the semi finals. Clarke Central is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009, when the made it all the way to the finals. O’brien Barnett rushed for 101 yards on 19 carries to lead the Gladiators to victory. On the season, Clarke Central is averaging 23.4 points per game on offense. Meanwhile, their opponent, Warner Robins, is averaging 37.5 points per game. Quarterback Dylan Fromm passed for 216 yards and 3-TDs leading the Demons to a 35-0 victory over Ware County. We don’t believe that Clark Central can afford to get into a shoot-out with Warner Robins. There is currently a 90% chance of rain Friday night. Depending on what time the weather moves through, it might have an effect on the Demons ability to pass the ball. Even still, we like Warner Robins by two touchdowns.

TFR GHSA 6-A-Quarterfinal Playoff Preview

Our GHSA 6-A-Quarterfinal playoff previews are listed below. This preview features matchups between  Valdosta-Dacula, Northside Warner Robins-Sequoyah, Coffee-Lanier, Lee County-Creekview. Region-1 has all four teams advancing to the quarterfinals. That’s a testament to how tough that region is. Could they push all four teams to the semi-finals…Only time will tell. Congratulations to these final 8 teams on a successful season. Best of luck to you all as you compete this Friday.

The Skinny

The Dacula Falcons will host the Valdosta Wildcats on Friday. This is their second quarterfinal appearance since 2013. The Falcons were led by running back Trenton Jones last week as he rushed for 122 yards and 1-TD. Meanwhile, the Valdosta defense forced a few turnovers, and was able to keep Glynn Academy at bay and advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in three years. Tate Rodemaker continues to re-write the Valdosta record books in terms of passing. Prior to last weeks game he had thrown for 3,263 yards and 32-TDs. The Dacula defense is only giving up 13.5 points per game. But we don’t think they’ve faced an attack like Valdosta’s. The one equalizer for Dacula might be the weather. Currently, there is an 80% chance of rain on Friday in Dacula. Will that aid the Falcons…we don’t think it will be enough. We like the Wildcats by 13.

The Skinny

The Northside Warner-Robins Eagles will visit Canton for the first time as the travel to face the Sequoyah Chiefs. Northside is coming off of a big shutout win over Bradwell. Northside got 3 touchdowns from Zikhyree Hill and 73 yards rushing last week to pace the Eagles in the victory. The Sequoyah Chiefs won a thriller down in Fairburn as they beat Creekside 50-49 in overtime. Sequoyah generally runs the wing-T, but really opened it up and Collier Pecht, (Pecht rhymes with faith), threw for 273 yards and 4-TDs. This would be the Chiefs second come from behind victory in as many weeks. This is only the Chiefs second time making it to the round of 8. Is there more magic left for Sequoyah? The current forecast is calling for rain on Friday evening. We aren’t sure if that benefits either team, but our guess is that we will see both teams try to establish the run. We think this one will be close, but our gut tells us Northside by a touchdown.

The Skinny

Coffee was brewing once again as the Trojans, the 4-Seed from Region-1, went on the road and beat Richmond Hill last week. This is the 3rd consecutive year that the Trojans have reached the quarterfinals. Freshman running back Maurice Turner paced the Coffee offense with 198 yards on 14 carries with 1-TD. Quarterback, AJ Wilkerson ran for 85 yards and 2-TDs. Lanier quarterback, Zach Calzada also had a big night on the ground for the Longhorns, as he ran 15 times for 107 yards and 3-TDs. Taj Barnes also had a productive night out of the backfield, as he ran for 191 yards and 2-TDs. Will the Coffee County players be road weary this week? This will be their second trip to metro Atlanta in three weeks. Coffee’s only losses were to the other 3 Region-1 teams, and all of them are still in the playoffs. We like the Trojans to advance by 10 points.

This might possibly be the best quarterfinal matchup regardless of classification. Coach Adam Carter has his upstart Creekview Grizzlies playing at a high level. The Grizzlies are in the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. And have been ranked No. 2 for several weeks. Cade Radam rushed for 277 yards and 4-TDs in a wild game against Habersham Central. The final point total might have some thinking it was the score to a basketball game, as Creekview outlasted Habersham Central 65-48. The Grizzlies will be on the road to face the No. 1 team in the state and the defending state champion, Lee County Trojans. Lee County currently holds an 18 game winning streak dating back to 2017. The Trojans recorded their 5th shutout of the season last week. Their defense has been the biggest story as they are only allowing opponents 4.1 points per game. Can Creekview pull the upset on Friday?!?! Of course they can…we certainly do believe it’s possible, but we just don’t think it’s probable. It will be close than most think, but look for Lee County to win this game by two touchdowns.

The Lowndes Vikings will be back on the road this week as they travel to Northeast Metro Atlanta to take on the Grayson Rams. Grayson has won both of the previous meetings between the two schools. Last week the Vikings got a big game from freshman Jacurri Brown, as he rushed for 135 yards and 1-TD. Travis Tisdale added 63 yards on the ground. The Vikings also got a defensive touchdown, en route to a shutout victory over Westlake. The Grayson Rams also had a big night from a young back as sophomore Phil Mafah rushed for 168 yard on 14 carries and scored a touchdown as the Rams downed Norcross. This week, we are interested to see if the Vikings can find any running lanes against a Grayson defense that features the likes of Owen Pappoe, Tru Thompson, and Kevin Harris. We like the Rams at home by a field goal over Lowndes.

The Skinny

The Milton Eagles are back in the quarterfinals for only the 3rd time in school history. Last week, Jordan Yates passed for 275 yards and 2-TDs to lead Milton over Mill Creek. The Georgia Tech commit has passed for 2,157 yards and 21-TDs on the season. The Hillgrove Hawks got past Walton on a last second field goal. Issaiah McCray and Tre Walker combined to lead the Hawks on the ground with 156 yards rushing. As most know, Hillgrove has done most of their damage on the ground this season. So can Milton slow down the Hawks run game? No one has been able to figure it out this season. But we think the Eagles figure it out and win this one by a field goal on the road.

The Skinny

Tift County has made the most of their “at-large” appearance in the 2018 playoffs. The Blue Devils are making their second consecutive quarterfinals appearance. Last week, Mike Jones carried the ball 21 times for 125 yards and 2-TDs as Tift came from behind to beat East Coweta. Jones has rushed for 1,130 yards on the season with 12-TDs while Patrick Felton has passed for 1,401 yards and 13-TDs this year. Archer also had a big week from Semaje Banks (95 yards rushing) and quarterback Carter Peevy (192 yards passing). The Blue Devils are racking up some travel miles, in 3 weeks they will have traveled well I excess of 1,100 miles roundtrip. We think Tift County runs out of gas this week. We like the Tigers by 10 at home on Friday.

The Skinny

This game is a rematch of the 2017 State Title game that went down to the wire last season. North Gwinnett got 3 touchdown passes from J.R. Martin while Ty Goodson added two rushing touchdowns in the win over West Forsyth. The only touchdown that North Gwinnett allowed last week was a fumble returned for a touchdown. The Colquitt County Packers got a big game from Ty Leggett and Daijuan Edwards as the two backs combined for 188 yards on the ground and 5 combined TDs. Colquitt surrendered the highest point total of the season on Friday night, allowing 29 points to McEachern. If the game comes down to special teams, we give the edge to Colquitt County and their kicker, Ryan Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has made 14 of 17 field goals, with a long of 57. We don’t think this game will come to that. We like Colquitt by two touchdowns over North Gwinnett.

The Skinny

In perhaps the biggest shocker in round one of the Class-A Private playoffs, the Riverside Military Academy Eagles knocked off the George Walton Academy Bulldogs. Eagle’s Head Coach Nick Garrett has not been shy about praising one of his star’s, Isaac Teasley. Teasley has rushed for 894 yards, passed for 1,405 yards and accounted for 20-TDs. The defense is led by Wookdong Harry Kimand his 9 sacks. Overall, they are allowing 20.7 points per game. Their opponent this week is the Fellowship Christian Paladins. The Paladins are two years removed from a trip to the finals. They have been steady under coach Al Morrell and are averaging 39.3 points per game. Their offense is keyed by Murphy Reeves who has rushed for 1,702 yards and 18 TDs. Our default was to take the Paladins at home, but we are going out go out on a limb with the underdog Riverside Military Eagles to edge out Fellowship by less than a field goal.

The Skinny

Head Coach Jeff Saturday has the Hebron Christian Lions moving in the right direction. The Lions are in the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. As we mentioned last week Hebron Christian is led by Colton Gauthier who has passed for 1,915 yards and 19-TDs on the season. Jeffrey Saturday is his primary receiver. Saturday caught 4 passes for 71-yards and one touchdown last week. On the season, he has caught 49 passes for 900 yards and 11-TDS. Host Savannah Christian claimed a region title under the direction of first year head coach Baker Woodward. Woodward was the former O/C at Benedictine. He has brought his system to Savannah Christian and has gotten his players to buy in. The only blemish on their record is a week one loss to Athens Academy. Dylan McMahon anchors both the offensive and defensive lines. Spencer Robicheaux leads the team in passing while Nate Moon (810 yards, 11-TDs) leads the rushing attack. Savannah Christian is scoring 37.2 points per game. We know that Hebron certainly will not go quietly into the night. We think they are about a year away from making a deep run. We like the Savannah Christian Raiders to survive and advance by a touchdown.

The Skinny

The Aquinas Fighting Irish will have a chance to redeem last years playoff loss as they visit the Darlington Tigers on Friday. The Fighting Irish are averaging 30.3 points per game on offense and allowing 17.1 points per game on defense. Kam Brinson and Ashlon Williams have combined for 1,549 yards and 16-TDs. The Darlington Tigers aren’t necessarily lighting the world on fire on offense, averaging 22.7 points per game, while their defense is allowing 14.6 points per game. The Tigers are in the post season for the 12thconsecutive season. We aren’t sure if they can contain the Aquinas backs this week. We like the fighting Irish to win this game by a field goal.

The Skinny

Trinity Christian is no stranger to post season action, but much of their success had previously been at the GISA level. The Lions won their first GHSA playoff game last week and as a prize, they will visit Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy. This won’t be a traditional home game for Eagle’s Landing, as the game has been moved to Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta due to the recent rains that made field conditions unplayable on Friday. Trinity Christian is led by Zach Jones who has rushed for 1,005 yards and 10-TDs. The Lions are averaging 25.4 points per game on offense, while the defense is giving up 15.5 points per game. Since ELCA’s 37-game win streak has been stopped, the Chargers have been on a role. Their smallest margin of victory since that time was 21 points. On the season, they are averaging 53.3 points per game, while the defense is only allowing 6.2 points each time out. Senior Quarterback Brayden Rush has been at the helm for all 3 of the prior championship runs. I guess we should also mention that ELCA beat Trinity Christian earlier this season by 61 points. We just don’t think Trinity has closed the gap that much. We like ELCA to win by six touchdowns.

TFR 2018 GHSA-A-Private Playoff Preview 1 of 2

Our first set of week two GHSA-A-Private Playoff previews are listed below. This preview features matchups between Holy Innocents-Calvary Day, Mt. Vernon-Athens Academy, Brookstone-North Cobb Christian, and Wesleyan-Prince Avenue Christian. Congratulations to all of these teams that won their first round game. Best of luck to you all as you play this Friday.

As always, thanks for reading. Please feel free to contact me if there are any errors.

The Skinny

After having a bye in the first round, the Calvary Day Cavaliers will host the Holy Innocents Bears. The Cavaliers are averaging 38.7 points per game on offense and are led by quarterback Thomas Carver and running back Jalen Leary. On defense, Calvary is allowing 9.6 points per game. Meanwhile, Holy Innocents has been up and down this season. Offensively, the Bears are averaging 34.2 points per game, but on defense they are allowing 23.1 points per game. Michael Cox leads the Bears on offense with 1,525 yards rushing and 24-TDs.   Graham Collins leads the Bears defense with 6 sacks. We don’t think Holy Innocents can generate enough offense to outlast Calvary Day; we like Calvary by 10 this Friday.

The Skinny

The Mt. Vernon Mustangs got a big home playoff win against Savannah Country Day last week. Austin Douglas continues to lead the offense with 1,528 yards rushing and 17-TDs. Blake Kytle leads the Mustangs with 2,283 yards passing and 25-TDs on the season. Mt. Vernon’s ability to compete will certainly not be a question this week. Host, Athens Academy has relied on the running of Len’Neth Whitehead and Peyton Bowles this season. Whitehead is a big physical back that the Mustangs won’t be able to arm tackle. Athens Academy is averaging 32.8 points per game on the season. We think Mt. Vernon will hang around, but ultimately, we like Athens Academy by two touchdowns when the dust settles.

The Skinny

We must admit the score to the Broosktone-Christian Heritage game was a little shocking to us. It just proves that we’ve been wrong before and will most certainly be wrong again. Brookstone is averaging 39.6 points per game on the season. Running back Jeremiah Burgess leads the ground game with 1,140 yards and 17-TDs. As a team, Brookstone has rushed for 2,966 yards in 2018. Host, North Cobb Christian has experienced a bit of a resurgence this season. The Eagles are on a 3-game win streak and have qualified for their first postseason action in school history. This season, the North Cobb defense as allowing only 16.4 points per game. Christian Heritage was the common opponent for both Brookstone and North Cobb Christian. Both teams beat the Lions. We aren’t sure how relevant the point spread is in those matchups. We think North Cobb Christian is flying high and we don’t expect them to be derailed this week; North Cobb by 13.

The Skinny

The Wesleyan Wolves will travel to Bogart to face the Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines. Wesleyan will have their hands full with the young Prince Avenue quarterback, Brock Vandagriff, who has passed for 2,637 yards and 26-TDs. His primary receivers are Mack Simmons (926 yards, 10-TDs) and Christian Parrish (716 yards, 9-TDs). Wesleyan is coming off of a first-round win against Tattnall Square. Freshman quarterback J.C. French has passed for 1,676 yards and 12-TDs. On the season, the Wolves are averaging 23 points per game while their defense is allowing 19.6 points each contest. The weather is forecasted to be cold, so we always wonder how that will affect the quarterback’s ability to pass and how the receivers are also able to adjust to that. We believe that Prince Avenue will be able to handle the elements this week and down Wesleyan by two scores.
