Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 10 – Part I

We are entering the last quarter of the regular season for Georgia High School Football. Time is getting shorter for teams to make their move for playoff positions. Some region winners across the state have already been decided. While the playoff picture is starting to take shape, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. This is Part I of our weekly feature that we call Eight Greats Around the State, where we take a look at eight intriguing matchups this week.

The Kell Longhorns are back in region title contention but will face a tough test from the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans. Kyle has a dynamic quarterback in Bryce Clavon. Can he out-duel Spartans quarterback Jack Stanton? Over in West Georgia, the Carrollton Trojans will host the Westlake Lions. Westlake has gotten back on track after losing to Newton three weeks ago, but do they have enough fire power to combat Carrollton?

The Newton Rams are steadily marching towards a region title, but have another tough opponent this week as Parkview comes to town. Can Parkview slow down Newton’s Zion Johnson? Finally, down in central Georgia, the Houston County Bears host the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets. Houston County needs a win to keep pace with the Region-1 leaders, but Thomas County Central has been red hot. Can the Bears passing game lead them to an upset this week?

The Skinny

The Kell Longhorns have won their last six games after dropping the season opener to Class 7A Parkview. The Longhorns are averaging 43 points per game. Offensively, Kell has a balanced attack as they are averaging 235.1 yards per game on the ground and 235.9 yards per game through the air. Sophomore running back Tyron Green and freshman Quinterrius Gipson have combined to rush for 1,088 yards and 16-TDs. Both Bryce Clavon and Kamari Nix have spent time at quarterback, but it has been Clavon gettin the bulk of snaps as of late. He’s thrown for 847 yards and 9-TDs. Top receivers fr Kell are Peyton Zachary (27 receptions, 406 yards, 5-TDs) and Kyle Vaka (22 receptions, 500 yards, 7-TDs). The defense has forced 10 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 14 times. Tashawn Natt leads the team in total tackles (50).

The Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans are off to their best start in three years as they’ve won their first seven ball games. The Spartans are averaging 232.7 yards per game through the air and 199.6 yards per game on the ground. Senior quarterback Jack Stanton has thrown for 1,485 yards and 17-TDs. Xavier Daisy has been Stanton’s go to target with 27 receptions for 584 yards and 8-TDs. Senior running back G.L. Tiberia has rushed for 830 yards snd 9-TDs. Sophomore linebacker Reid Voyles leads the team with 63 total tackles The Spartans defense is allowing 12.7 points per game and has forced seven turnovers.

This game should decide the region champion as both teams are going to favored in their last three games. The Spartans are going to have to find a way to keep the explosive Kell offense. That’s easier said than done. We like Kell by 8.

The Skinny

The Carrolton Trojans have won seven straight all games after dropping their opener. Since surrendering 39 points in their Week-1 game, they’ve allowed just 59 total points included three shutouts. Their defense is allowing 12.2 points per game. The defense has forced 11 turnovers on the season. The offense is averaging 239.3 yards per game through the air and 128.9 yards per game rushing. They are scoring just over 47 points per game. Quarterback Julian “Juju” Lewis has thrown for 1,920 yards and his completing 67.1% of his passes. Caleb Odom (28 receptions, 491 yards, 7-TDs) and Ryan Mosley (21 receptions 299 yards, 3-TDs) are the teams leading receivers, while Kendall Farmer leads the offense with 808 rushing yards.

The Westlake Lions bounced back for a loss three weeks ago to win consecutive games. The Lions offense is averaging 43.7 points per game and have done most of their work by way of the run game. Junior running backs Tamir Bransford and Naeem Odeniyi have combined to rush for 846 yards and 16-TDs to lead the ground game. Through the first 6 games of the season, quarterback Sean Smith has thrown for 796 yards and 12-TDs and has yet to thrown an interception. Receiver Travis Smith Jr. has caught a team leading 22 catches for 429 yards and 6-TDs. The defense is allowing 18.4 points per game and have forced 15 turnovers on the year.

Carrollton can clinch the region title with a win on Friday night. We believe the home field of Grisham stadium well help give the home town Trojans an edge. Carrollton by 11.

The Skinny

The Newton Rams are off to their best start in school history. The Rams are in search of their first region title since 2017. Additionally they are on pace to have the best offensive production in school history. They are averaging just over 361 yards per game offensively. Running back Zion Johnson has already eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark this season with 1,085 yards and 14-TDs. He’s averaging 9.4 yards per carry. Keon Davis and Marcus Calwise have combined to catch 31 passes for 811 yards and 10-TDs to lead the Rams receiving corps. Defensively the Rams are allowing 10 points per game with two shutouts on the year.

The Parkview Panthers are looking to bounce back after a 1-point loss to Archer last week. The Panthers can theoretically still win the region, but they will need to win out and get some help along the way. Parkview’s offense is averaging 157.3 yards per game through the air and 176.1 yards per game on the ground. Trelain Maddox, Brian Stokes, Jr. and Davin Rouse have combined to rush for 1,066 yards and 12-TDs on the season. Meanwhile, Michael Matthews (23 receptions, 488 yards, 6-TDs) and Carson Wilson (21 receptions, 396 yards, 4-TDs) lead the Parkview receivers. The Panthers defense has sacked opposing quarterbacks 28 times this season with senior defensive end Ira Singleton leading the way with 7.5. They’ve also forced 11 turnovers.

Newton has been playing lights out, but the competition continues to stiffen in region play. The big question is whether or not Zion Johnson can get going for Newton. Meanwhile, Parkview will need to avoid a hangover from last week’s loss. We believe this game will be nip and tuck, but like Newton win at home. Rams by 3.

The Skinny

The Houston County Bears recorded their largest margin of victory over Northside Warner Robins last week. Now they will try to keep pace with another high scoring region rival. The Bears are averaging 46.7 points per game this season and have not scored any less than 35 points in any game. Quarterback Antwann Hill has passed for 1,814 yards and 23-TDs while completing 69.5% of his passes. His top targets this season have been Ricky Johnson (42 receptions, 835 yards, 11-TDs) and Kale Woodburn (32 receptions, 357 yards, 4-TDs). Houston has shown the ability to run the football, averaging 169.3 yards per game with Ryan Taleb leading the way with 616 yards and 8-TDs.

The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets are looking for their second straight region title. They are undefeated in the regular season going back to the start of the 2022 campaign. The offense is averaging just over 374 yards per game and scoring 47.8 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Jaylen Johnson has thrown for 1,093 yards and 12-TDs. Malachi Thomas and Trevor Pringle have been the go-to receivers, with a combined 29 receptions for 620 yards and 9-TDs. Meanwhile, Trey Benton continues to lead the team on the ground with 684 yards and 12-TDs. The defense has been just as good this season, allowing just 6.7 points per game including three shutouts. They’ve forced 11 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 8 times.

The big question in this game is can Houston protect the ball on offense and slow down the Jackets ground game. We don’t believe Thomas County Central will keep Houston out of the end zone, but we do believe they will do just enough to get the win this week. Jackets by a touchdown.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 10

Week-9 came and went with some great action across the state. Several teams were off last week but there were still plenty of big games that have an impact on seeding for the upcoming postseason. In this feature, we take a look at our Top-10 through the first 9 weeks of the season.

Perhaps the biggest game of the state was in Class 7A as Mill Creek and Buford locked horns. It was Mill Creek that out dueled highly rated Buford. The win bumps Mill Creek to the No. 1 spot this week while Buford falls to No. 5. Meanwhile, Parkview lost to Archer, and as a result, they drop from the Top-10. That makes room for Norcross who is back in at No. 10 this week. There were no changes in the rankings for Class 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A or 2A this week as all of the Top-10 teams remain the same.

Class A Division I saw a little shake up as Rabun County was upset by Elbert County. Elbert stays put at No. 4 this week while Rabun County drops to No. 9. The region race is still wide open as both teams still have to face Commerce. Finally, in Class A Division II, Early County drops a few spots down to No. 7 after a loss to Brooks County. Otherwise there were no changes to the Top-10.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 9 – Part II

The stakes continue to get higher as teams across the state of Georgia fight for playoff position. Week-9 gives us more great action across the state of Georgia. This is our weekly feature in which we take a look at eight of some intriguing matchups from around the state.

First up in Tiger, the Rabun County Wildcats host the Elbert County Blue Devils. Rabun is rounding into playoff form, but they will have their hands full with an Elbert County team that is dynamic on offense. Can the Blue Devils get their first win ever against Rabun. Over in Athens, the Athens Academy Spartans host the Fellowship Christian Paladins. Athens Academy has a budding star at quarterback and a great duo at running back. Will they be able to have success against a usually stingy Fellowship Christian defense?

Over in Ellaville, Schley County takes on another challenger for their region crown as the Taylor County Vikings come calling. Taylor County is playing with a lot of confidence and is on a five game win streak coming into this game. Do they have enough weapons to neutralize Schley County? Finally, the Temple Tigers will host the Lamar County Trojans. Both teams run the ball very well. Which teams rushing attack will shine brightest with a region title on the line?

The Skinny

The Rabun County Wildcats are winners of their last five games. During that stretch, the Wildcats are averaging 41.8 points per game and allowing 16.2 per game. Rabun has used a relatively balanced attack on offense this season, averaging 191.7 yards per game through the air and 209.6 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore signal caller Ty Truelove has thrown for 1,270 yards and 14-TDs. Willie Goodwin continues to lead the team with 27 reception for 647 yards and 10-TDs. Reid Giles has run for 722 yards and 10-TDs. Giles is a speedy back that is also dangerous as a punt returner and on defense as he leads the team in tackles for loss.

The Elbert County Blue Devils have also won their last five games. The Blue Devils feature an offense that has been prolific through the air,  as they are averaging 240.1 yards per game passing and 175.4 yards per game on the ground. Jayven Hickman and Brayden Scarborough have combined to throw for 1,654 yards and 15-TDs. Jacari Barnett leads the ground game with 855 yards and 12-TDs. Brady Dickerson, Dahkovin Winn,  Eli Harris and Ty’Rikkis Jones have all posted double digit receptions on the season. The Elbert County defense has intercepted 11 passes, with sophomore Jose Rodriguez collecting 4 of those picks.

Both of these teams have shown explosiveness to this point in the season. The Blue Devils seem to have a few more weapons on offense, but don’t discount the young Wildcats stars. Rabun’s offense should be up to the task. Elbert County has never defeated Rabun County. We don’t believe that happens this week. Wildcats by 11.

The Skinny

Athens Academy has won their last three games and got a big region win last week. In their four victories this season, the Spartans have scored over 40 points and in their two defeats, they’ve not scored more than 21 points. The offense is averaging 258.8 yards per game through the air and 204.3 yards per game on the ground. Jamari Welch and Jeremiah Wingfield have combined to rush for 1,165 yards and 15-TDs, while junior quarterback Hampton Johnson has thrown for 1,493 yards and 14-TDs. Freshman Keyon Stander leads the team in receiving with 14 receptions for 429 yards and 4-TDs.

The Fellowship Christian Paladins have won three of their last four games. The Paladins have won all of their games in which they’ve scored more than 30 points. Overall, the Paladins are averaging 39.3 points per game. Running back C.J. Givers has rushed for 688 yards to lead the Paladins on the ground. Al Thompson had big game last week for the Paladins on the ground, going over the century mark. The duo benefits from running behind the talented Joshua Petty on the offensive line. Quarterback Jonathan Granby has shown an ability to beat teams as a passer or as a runner.

The winner of this game should be in the poll position for the region title and at minimum, we expect the winner of this game to host a playoff game come post-season. Fellowship Christian will need to find a way to slow down the prolific Athens Academy offense. We expect the Paladins to limit the Spartans, but we believe the Spartans won’t be held in check all night. Athens Academy by 7.

The Skinny

Schley County has won 13 consecutive region games dating back to 2021. They have also won 13 consecutive regular season games. They offense has done most of their damage through the air as quarterback Jay Kanazawa has thrown for 1,411 yards and 19-TDs, completing 64.2% of his passes. Jalewis Solomon has caught 28 passes for 588 yards and 8-TDs, as he’s been Kanazawa’s main target. Jeremyah Rogers paces the rushing attack with 512 yards and 5-TDs. The Wildcats defense is allowing 15 points per game, have sacked opposing quarterbacks 17 times and forced 24 turnovers. Carson Westbrook has accounted for 5 interceptions thus far.

The Taylor County Vikings have won five straight games entering this week. They are off to their best start in four seasons. During their win streak, Taylor is averaging 35 points per game while the defense is allowing 9.8 points per game. Overall, they are averaging 30.5 and allowing 10.8. Quarterback Cameron Lawson has shown his versatility as a runner and passer and also continues to show his versatility making big tackles as a safety on defense.

Taylor County is the next team that gets an opportunity to take down the prohibitive favorite to win the region title and state title. Lawhorn is an impressive player for the Vikings, but we don’t believe Taylor County has the depth the pull off the upset this week. We like Schley by 17.

The Skinny

The Temple Tigers come into this game looking to reverse some of their fortunes as they have dropped 3 of their last four games coming into this week Despite the last few games, Temple is still averaging 32.7 points per game while the defense is allowing 20.4 points per game. The Tigers have rushed for 1,824 yards in the first seven games and just 359 total yards through the air. Statistically C.J. Gray has rushed for 775 yards and 4-TDs while Carson McAnalllen has chipped in 384 yards and 6-TDs. Quarterback Jackson Gribbon has only attempted 52 passes this season.

The Lamar County Trojans have won their last four games and similar to Temple, the also have been effective running the football. As a team, they’ve run for 1,807 yards and have thrown for 169 yards. Quarterback Ty Head has only attempted 14 passes this season, but he’s also tallied 239 rushing yards and 6-TDs. It has been running back by committee for the Trojans as Jordan Glover (585 yards, 4-TDs),  ZyQuavius Hughley (440 yards, 4-TDs) and Kaden Carter (262 yards, 5-TDs) have all been big contributors this season.

It should be evident that the team that has more success running the ball should win this game. Our thoughts are that this game goes down to the wire this week and in those close games, we like the home team. Temple by 2 in a mild upset.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 9 – Part I

The stakes continue to get higher as teams across the state of Georgia fight for playoff position. Week-9 gives us more great action across the state of Georgia. This is our weekly feature in which we take a look at eight of some intriguing matchups from around the state.

First up, the Toombs County Bulldogs will look to take another step towards a region title as they host Pierce County. All signs point to a competitive matchup. Is Toombs ready to take control of the region or will Pierce create havoc in the region with a road win? Next up, in one of the biggest games in the state, the Mill Creek Hawks will host the Buford Wolves. The Wolves are one of the favorites to win the Class 7A state title, but the Hawks, the defending 7A champions won’t go quietly. Is Buford the real deal or will Mill Creek make their own statement on Friday?

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes are looking for another region title. They’ve cleared two hurdles with close calls and now host a very talented Hiram team. Can the upset minded Hornets get back into the playoff race or will Cartersville continue their march towards another region title. Finally, in Suwanee, the North Gwinnett Bulldogs host the upstart Peachtree Ridge Lions. The Lions are off to the best start in school history. Are the Lions contenders or pretenders?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

Special thanks to the Georgia Helmet Project for providing each team’s helmet. You can find all of their work here: http://gahelmetproject.com

Historical records are provided by the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. (ghsfa.org)

The Skinny

The Toombs County Bulldogs have won their first seven games for the first time since 1995, when they went undefeated during the regular season. The Bulldogs got a big win last week; an upset win over Appling County.  Offensively, they are averaging 326.9 yards per game on offense and scoring an average of 38.1 points per game. Quarterback T.J. Stanley has thrown for 1,273 yards and 17-TDs. His top targets have been Keshon Deloach (17 receptions, 346 yards, 4-TDs) and Lagonza Hayward, (13 receptions, 436 yards, 5-TDs). Meanwhile, freshman Alex Scott leads the team in total tackles (50), while Brock Nobles leads the team in sacks (4). The Bulldogs have forced 14 turnovers and are allowing 8 points per game and have shutout four of their opponents this season.

The Pierce County Bears were off last week and can jump back into contention for a region title, despite their loss to Appling County the last time out. As we have mentioned before, quarterback Caden McGatha is the straw that stirs the drink for the offense. McGatha leads the team in passing and rushing and is completing 67.9% of his passes. Joe Drew continues to lead the team in receiving. The Bears are averaging 42.5 points per game and have only been held under 40 points one time this season. The defense has been outstanding, allowing just 7.8 points per game.

The winner of this game won’t necessarily be a shoo-in for the region title as both teams have yet to play a tough Vidalia team. Toombs County is probably riding high after that big win last week. Pierce County has had time to refocus after their loss to Appling. We believe this is a bounce back game for Pierce County. We like McGatha and the Bears by a touchdown on the road.

The Skinny

The Mill Creek Hawks are 6-0 for the second consecutive season. Mill Creek is averaging 41.8 points per game offensively and are beating their opponents by an average margin of 25 points per game. Cam Robinson is steadily approaching the 1,000 yard mark in the ground as he’s rushed for 945 yards and 12-TDs. Trajen Greco remains atop the leader board with his 21 receptions, 260 yards and 6-TDs. Josh Anglin leads the defense with 39 total tackles and 6 sacks. The defense is allowing 16 points per game and has sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times this season.

The Buford Wolves are 6-0 for the second consecutive season. They’ve shutout three of their opponents this season and are defeating opponents by an average margin of victory of 23.1 points per game. The offense is led by quarterback Dylan Raiola, who has thrown for 1,350 yards and 14-TDs. Jordan Allen (18 receptions, 332 yards, 1-TD), TyShun White, (11 receptions, 106 yards, 2-TDs) and K.J. Bolden, (10 receptions, 220 yards, 6-TDs). The  Wolves are allowing just 6.3 points per game and have forced 15 turnovers, including three interceptions from defensive lineman Eddrick Houston. Bryce Perry-Wright leads the team with 6 sacks and 10 QB hurries.

While this is only the second region game for both teams, by most accounts, the winner in this game should go on to win the region title, barring any upsets. Buford hasn’t been spectacular rushing the football, but the really haven’t had to this season. Meanwhile, expect Mill Creek to lean on Cam Robinson and the ground game to pace their offense for another week. Against anyone else we like his chances, but this Buford defense should be up to the task. Wolves by 8.

The Skinny

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes escaped last week with an overtime victory over Barrow County rival Cass. The Canes have not been as prolific on offense this season as they have been in recent seasons, but are still averaging a respectable 29.4 points per game. The offense is averaging 309 yards per game; 138.9 yards per game through the air and 171.3 yards per game on the ground. Nate Russell tossed two touchdown passes last week and has now thrown for 887 yards and 9-TDs. The Canes defense has been stout this season, allowing 9.1 points per game including two shutouts.

The Hiram Hornets will go on the road and look to stay in contention for a region playoff spot. Running back Kaden Hamilton leads the way on the ground with 701 yards and 13-TDs. The Hornets are averaging 277.6 rushing yards per game this season. The Hornets defense allowed a season high 56 points last week to Calhoun. On the year, the are allowing 23.4 points per game. The Hornets defense has allowed 39 or more points three times this season. They’ve also shutout two of their opponents.

Cartersville victory would almost guaranty a region title for the Canes. Meanwhile, Hiram can really muddy the region standings with a win on Friday. This game features some of the best linemen in the region including Cartersville’s Luke Surrett and Malachi Toliver and Hiram’s Jameson Riggs and Clinton Richards. We expect both teams to establish their ground game. Hiram will keep this game close with their ability to run the football, but we like Cartersville at home. Canes by 5.

The Skinny

The North Gwinnett Bulldogs have won three straight games entering this week and both of their losses this season have come at the hands of ranked teams in Class7A. Quarterback Ryan Hall has thrown for 1,226 yards and 15-TDs. Hall, along with Julian Walters has combined to rush for 995 yards rushing and 17-TDs. Carter Campbell (20 receptions, 230 yards, 5-TDs), Nicholas Bookman (18 receptions, 211 yards, 2-TDs) and Hudson Morton (13 receptions, 233 yards, 4-TDs) lead the team in receiving. Cole Funderburk leads the defense in total tackles (46) and sacks (10).

The Peachtree Ridge Lions are off to their best start in school history. This week will be the Lions biggest test to date. The offense is averaging 40.8 points per game and has done it averaging 393.5 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback Darnell Kelly has thrown for 1,323 yards and 17-TDs. Rhari Thomas, Myles Abernathy and Lamar White have combined for 86 receptions, 878 yards and 14-TDs. Defensively, the Lions are allowing 12.6 points per game. They’ve also forced 16 turnovers, including 14 interceptions.

Both teams are playing well at this point in the season, and there is no reason not to think that both of these teams will be in the post season. The winner of this game will be in the catbird seat for a home playoff game come November. Peachtree Ridge has been great offensively this season, however, they haven’t faced an opponent like North Gwinnett. We believe the Bulldogs will out-duel the Lions. North Gwinnett by 10.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 9

We are now entering the final third of the high school football regular season. That means that region play continues as the race for playoff berths intensifies. Today we take a look at the Top-10 teams in each classification based on Friday night’s outcomes.

There were no changes in the rankings for Class 7A and 6A is several teams were off and the ranked teams that did play all won. In 5A, Hiram drops from the rankings after a 21 point loss to Calhoun. Jones County is back in the rankings this week after a big win over Ola. In Class 4A, Benedictine outlasted Burke County on Friday in a battle of ranked teams. Burke drops one spot to No. 8 while Westminster falls from the rankings. The Central-Carroll Lions are in at No. 10 as they make their first appearance in the rankings this season.

Over in Class 3A, things got interesting in Region 1, as Crisp County fell to Monroe and Thomasville lost to Carver-Columbus. Carver is now in control of their own destiny with a matchup with Crisp looming for a potential region title. As a result of those games. Crisp and Thomasville drop from the rankings. They are replaced this week by Carver (No. 9) and Adairsville (No. 10). Class 2A got a little more interesting as Toombs County upset Appling County. The loss moves Toombs up one spot and Appling falls to No. 10.

There were not may surprises in Class A-Division I. Bleckley County won a Top-10 matchup and a big region game as they defeated Dublin. The win moves the Royals to No. 7 while Dublin falls to No. 9. Brooks County fell to Cook this week and drops out of the Top-10. They are replaced by Bryan County who got a big win over Metter. Finally in Class A-Division II, the Top-9 remained unchanged. However, Telfair County upset Wilcox County. That win propels Telfair into the rankings at No. 10 this week.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 8 – Part II

It’s hard to believe that the first three quarters of the high school football season is coming to a close. That can only means that playoff races continue to heat up. In this edition of our Eight Greats Around the State, we will take a look at games that have either region title or home playoff implications.

First up, in Region 5-7A the prohibitive favorites, North Cobb and Walton will square off. Will North Cobb be able to push Walton around or will the Raiders tame the Warriors? Next up, in Waynesboro, the Burke County Bears will host the Benedictine Cadets. Both teams overcame scares last week and look to take control of the region with a win on Friday. Will the Cadets survive another game on the road or will Burke County dethrone the champs?

Over in Dallas, East Paulding will host Langston Hughes. While we know East can score points, we are curios to see if their defense can hold Hughes in check. Finally in Dublin, the Fighting Irish host the Bleckley Royals. Bleckley looks a little more explosive on offense this season, but can they put a halt to the Dublin ground game?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The North Cobb Warriors are winners of their last three games and have a big win under their belt as they knocked off Top-10 Milton their last time out. What was most impressive was how North Cobb was able to dominate the line of scrimmage as David Ezioumeme was able to rack up 326 yards and 4-TDs. That performance helped propel him to the top of the leader board in rushing entering last week as he’s racked up 933 yards on the year. We have to give a shout out to that offensive line including Zach Addison, Elvin De La Cruz, Jason Grier, Alex Kolev, Ryan Muriana, Dom Moody, James Roe and Javian Vaughans. They’ll need another big game this week. Defensively, the Warriors have been prone to give up some points, allowing 32.6, yet some of that is due to the competition they’ve faced, which include 3 Top-10 teams in Class 7A.

The Walton Raiders look to be primed for a run at a region title this season. If that is going to become reality, they’ll need to continue their red hot scoring. The Raiders are averaging 55 points per game and have scored over 60 points twice. Senior quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has thrown for over 1,200 yards and 16-TDs and has only been intercepted once in 119 attempts. Cameron Loyd continues to shine at receiver this season with 24 receptions for 481 yards and 4-TDs. Hunter Teal and Wyatt Sonderman have also been reliable targets for the Raiders this season. Walton has been equally as good on defense, allowing 16.2 points pre game. Wendell Gregory is the team leader in sacks with 5, while linebacker Ashton Woods continues to lead the team in tackles.

Walton had their slimmest margin of victory of 20 points last week. They’ve outclassed all of their opposition, but this North Cobb team won’t be afraid of Walton. After all, last season they beat the Raiders on the road by 27. We believe this game will be much closer and Walton should be able to match North Cobb score for score. Raiders avenge last years loss. Walton by 8.

The Skinny

The Burke County Bears and Coach Franklin Stephens have picked up where long time coach Eric Parker left off and are off to their best start since 2017. Burke passed a big test last week defeating Wayne County. The Bears are averaging 178.2 yards per game on the ground and we expect them to continue that trend this week. A’merre Williams leads the way with 481 yards and 6-TDs. Quarterback Sean Vandiver has thrown for 716 yards and 8-TDs. Burke is averaging 28.8 points per game. Meanwhile the defense is allowing 13.5 points per game and has forced 9 turnovers. Linebacker Brandon Lively leads the team in total tackles (69) and sacks (4.5).

The Benedictine Cadets are also off to their best start since 2017. The Cadets are averaging 36 points per game. Prior to last Friday, the Cadets were averaging 335 yards per game. Quarterback Luke Kromenhoek continues to be reliable for the Cadets with 995 yards and 11-TDs on the season. Kromenhoek has also shown an ability to scramble with over 313 yards rushing and 4-TDs. Meanwhile, Na’Sear Samual and Bryce Baker have combined for over 600 yards on the season. Defensively, the Cadets have forced 12 turnovers and are allowing just over 14 points per game.

While both teams will still have to play out the schedule, this game should determine the number one seed in the region. The Cadets defense yielded a lot of yardage last week, so we can only guess they will be looking to shore that up this week. Burke County will push Benedictine, but we like Kromenhoek and the Cadets by 3.

The Skinny

The East Paulding Raiders are winners of their last three games. The Raiders have used two quarterbacks as Chantz Bouknight and Baylor Thomason have combined to throw for 1,290 yards and 12-TDs in five games this season. The Raiders have relied a little more on the passing game this season as they are averaging 218 yards per game through the air and 128.2 yards per game on the ground. Junior running back Javen Parker leads the ground game with 657 yards and 8-TDs. The Raiders have made strides on both sides of the ball as they are averaging 36 points per game and the defense is allowing 17.1 points per game.

The Langston Hughes Panthers find themselves in a precarious position with little room for error if they want to host a first round playoff game. The Panthers remain one of the top teams in the classification. They are averaging 39.3 points per game with an offense that’s powered by Prentiss “Air” Noland. In five games, Nolan has thrown for 983 yards and 11-TDs. Justus Savage and Dorian Page continue to lead the Panthers on the ground as they’ve combined to rush for aver 1,100 yards thus far. Similar to their opponent, the Panthers are allowing 17.1 points per game.

The winner of this game will put themselves in great position to host a home playoff game. Hughes has a little more star power on both sides of the ball and on paper has played a more challenging schedule. It won’t be a cakewalk this week, as the Raiders are vastly improved from a season ago. We just believe the Panthers are too deep. Hughes by 16.

The Skinny

The Dublin Fighting Irish are 4 points away from being undefeated on the season. Nevertheless, the Fighting Irish are averaging 34.6 points per game. They are also averaging 244.4 yards per game on the ground and just 28.2 yards per game through the air. They’ve only attempted 26 passes on the year. Xavier Bostic leads the ground game with 404 yards and 5-TDs. Kameron Hampton has chipped in 250 yards rushing on the season. The Irish defense is led by the aforementioned Bostic with 22 total tackles. Brandon Chatman leads the team with 4 sacks. They’ve also shut out two of their five opponents.

The Bleckley County Royals are winners of their last two games. The offense has been effective this season, averaging 34.1 points per game, including three games where the scored over 40 points. Royals quarterback Kam’Ryn Everett has thrown for 530 yards in four games this season with 7-TDs. Marcus Newson and Tyrek Mack lead the team in receptions and receiving yards. The aforementioned Everett and sophomore back Joshua Stanley lead the team in rushing. The Royals defense is allowing 23.6 points per game.

Dublin won this game going away last season, but we have a feeling these two teams are a little closer than last season’s 18-point win. We’ve mentioned this before and we believe it applies here, the ground game of Dublin should hold the ball just enough to keep the explosive Bleckley offense on the sideline. Fighting Irish by 8.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 8 – Part I

It’s hard to believe that the first three quarters of the high school football season is coming to a close. That can only means that playoff races continue to heat up. In this edition of our Eight Greats Around the State, we will take a look at games that have either region title or home playoff implications.

There are two key matchups in Region 7-5A. First, Cartersville will host Bartow County rival Cass on Friday night. Can Cass break through and upset Cartersville, or will the Purple Hurricanes continue their mastery in the series? Second, the Hiram Hornets will host the Calhoun Yellow Jackets. The Hornets surprised the Jackets last season, so we know Calhoun will be prepared. The Hornets are playing with confidence. Can they take a step closer in securing a home playoff game?

Over in Hickory Flat, the Sequoyah Chiefs will welcome the Rome Wolves. The Wolves have been dominant in region play over the last two years. Can Sequoyah’s defense slow Rome? Finally, down in Lakeland, Lanier County has never defeated Clinch. The Bulldogs might have their best shot this season, but Clinch won’t just hand them a victory.

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes avenged their only region loss from a year ago with a victory over Calhoun last week. Through the first six games of the season, Cartersville is averaging 325 yards per game of total offense. Khristian Lando continues to pace the Canes with 348 rushing yards and 9-TDs, as he averages 5.4 yards per carry. Meanwhile Jamauri Brice continues to lead the receivers with 13 receptions for 230 yards and 3-TDs. The Canes defense is allowing 8.3 points per game and has shutout two of their opponents this season.

The Cass Colonels have won four straight games entering this week’s game and seem to be clicking on offense. They have scored more than 40 points in each of their victories this season and are now averaging 32.5 points per game. Quarterback Brodie McWhorter is finding his stride and expect him to continue to look for receivers Sacovie White and Devin Henderson to help move the ball through the air. The offensive line is anchored by Kail Ellis and Bear McWhorter. They will certainly need to be on point against an aggressive Cartersville defensive front. Speaking of defense, Cass is allowing 16.3 points per game.

If Cass can keep this game in the twenties, we like their chances this week. We believe this one is much closer than last season, but we believe Cartersville will be able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides. Canes by 8.

The Skinny

The Hiram Hornets are off to their best start since 2009 when they went undefeated in the regular season. The 2023 Hornets have had plenty of success on the ground, averaging 288.8 yards per game. Kaden Hamilton and Da’Shaun Williams have combined to rush for 1,044 and 15-TDs. Chase Tyler is the team’s leading receiver with 18 catches for 231 yards and 2-TDs. The Hornets defense has forced 14 turnovers and sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times. They are allowing 18 points per game.

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets are looking to bounce back from last weeks heartbreaking loss to Cartersville. As we’ve mentioned before, the Jackets will lean on the play of quarterback Trey Townsend, running back Caden Williams and Tight End Emareee Winston. However, Kam Penny has shown some big play potential at wide receiver for Calhoun. The Jackets are averaging 29.8 points per game while the defense is allowing 17.8 points per game.

There is still a lot to be determined in Region 7-5A, but if either of these teams have aspirations of hosting a home playoff game, they will need to find a way to win on Friday night. The Hornets ground game has been impressive. Can Calhoun avoid a letdown after last week’s loss? We believe Hiram will have their number again on Friday. Hornets by 5.

The Skinny

The Sequoyah Chiefs got a come from behind victory last week to outlast the River Ridge Knights. Sequoyah had their largest offensive output of the season last week as they scored five touchdowns. Two of those Touchdowns by Ean Marria, who also doubles as a run stopping defensive end. The Chiefs were able to run the ball when they needed to and that’s a credit to their offensive line led by seniors Brady Curl, Dmitri Morris and Asher Martineau. Will Rajecki (274 yards, 2-TDs), Jackson Hancock (204 yards, 1-TD) and Ean Marria (162 yards, 4-TDs) have been the beneficiaries of that blocking by the Chiefs front five. Sequoyah is averaging 19.6 points per game. Defensively, the Chiefs have sacked opposing quarterbacks 22 times this season with sophomore Matthew Matz leading the way with 7. They’ve also forced 11 turnovers.

The Rome Wolves flexed their muscle last week and ran away from Woodstock for their second consecutive region win. Rome quarterback Reece Fountain added to his passing numbers, as the senior signal caller has now thrown for 1,242 yards and 17-TDs. Special teams might come into play this week and if they do, watch for D.K. Daniel and Toot Stallings to show up big there for the Wolves. Rome’s defense has been dominant; in their five wins this season, they’ve only allowed three touchdowns. Speaking of defense, since joining Region 6-6A last season, Rome’s defense is allowing 4.5 points per game. In that eight game stretch, they’ve only allowed five touchdowns.

All signs point to Rome to continue their domination of Region 6-6A, but if there is a team defensively that might be able to slow them down, we believe Sequoyah might be up to the task. The Chiefs will have to force Rome turnovers and keep Fountain and the Wolves offense on the sidelines. We believe it’s possible, but not probably. Rome by three touchdowns.

The Skinny

The Lanier County Bulldogs are off to their best start since 2003. While the Bulldogs might not be lighting up the scoreboard, their defense has led the way allowing just 11.4 points per game. Tommy Manning and Erick Brown lead the team in total tackles with 39 and 29 respectively. The Bulldogs offense has been relatively balanced, averaging 150 yards per game through the air and 126.8 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Drake Woolford has thrown for 750 yards and 8-TDs and has added 166 yards and 3-TDs on the ground. His top receivers are B.J. Jones and Darien Taylor; the duo has combined for 28 receptions for 458 yards and 5-TDs.

The Clinch County Panthers have won four straight games and are in search of their first region title since 2018. The Panthers have done most of their damage by way of the ground game as they are averaging 298.2 yards per game rushing and just 57.5 yard per game through the air. It has been a combination of Aaron Bryant and Jeremy Bell leading the way on the ground as they’ve combined to rush for 1,293 yards and 15-TDs. As a team, Clinch has amassed 1,789 yards rushing this season. They are averaging 31.6 points per game. Defensively, they are allowing 16 points per game.

Lanier has never beaten Clinch in 25 tries. The closest Lanier has been was a 3-0 loss back in 2012. We believe both of these teams will put points on the board this weekend and this game will be closer than the 35 point Clinch win last year. The Panthers ground game should wear down Lanier late in the game. Clinch by 9.

GHSA Football Rankings – Week 8

The GHSA Football season turns the page to the second half of the regular season and while the fall temperatures are cooling off, the action on the field continues to heat up. Here is a look at our Top-10 teams in each of the 8 classifications.

Perhaps the biggest upset in Class 7A was Newton’s come from behind victory over Grayson. The loss drops Grayson from the rankings this week while Newton is up to No. 7. Westlake is back in at No. 10 this week. Perhaps the biggest matchup in Class 6A was the Lee County-Houston County tilt, which Lee County won by 9. The Trojans hold steady at No. 3 this week while the loss drops Houston down to No. 10.

Cartersville notched a come from behind victory of their own this past Friday, as they scored 21 unanswered to defeat region rival Calhoun. The Canes retain the top spot in our rankings, while Calhoun drops to No. 6 in the Class 5A rankings. The Top half of the Class 4A rankings remains unchanged, but the bottom half continues to be a roller coaster. Two teams are out, (Starr’s Mill and Holy Innocents), while Trinity Christian and Westminster are in at No. 8 and 9 respectively after vicotories over the aforementioned Starr’s Mill and Holy Innocents.

In Class 3A, Sandy Creek drops a few spots to No. 5, after losing to Class 5A Harris County. Otherwise there was relatively little movement in the Top-10 this week. Class 2A saw Appling County with a win over region rival Pierce County on Friday. That drops Pierce down one spot to No. 5 this week. Meanwhile, Cook is back in the poll at No. 9, while Toombs County makes their debut at No. 10.

Class A Division-I saw little movement as well. Brooks County is down to No. 10 after a defeat at the hands of Class 5A Bainbridge. Prince Avenue Christian fell to Monroe Area, but maintains the No. 1 spot this week. Finally, Class A-Division II was shaken up a little bit as Manchester defeated Macon County in a battle of Top-10 teams. Macon County drops to No. 6 this week. Meanwhile, Aquinas downed region rival Lincoln County. That win catapults them into the rankings at No. 9 this week while Wilcox County rounds out the Top-10 at No. 10.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 7 – Part II

As we enter Week-7, Region races are beginning to tighten. This is our weekly feature where we take a look of eight of the more intriguing matchups across the state of Georgia. Here is Part II of our Eight Greats Around the State.

First up, Calhoun and Cartersville will face off in a battle of Top-10 teams in Class 5A. Calhoun won a thriller last season, will Cartersville return the favor this season? Over in Leesburg, the Lee County Trojans will host the red hot Houston County Bears. Will the Lee County defense find a way to ground the Bears aerial assault?

Down in Ocilla, the Irwin County Indians will look to bounce back against a dangerous Swainsboro Tiger team. Can Irwin County put the brakes on the Swainsboro ground game? Finally, in a non-region battle, the North Paulding Wolfpack will host the Walton Raiders. Are the Wolfpack ready to be a contender amongst the state’s best, or will Walton continue their dominance?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets are winners of their last four games. Since being held to just 7 points in their season opener, the Jackets offense has been lights out. On the season, they are averaging 32.4 points per game. The offense has leaned on big plays from quarterback Trey Townsend, tight end Emareee Winston and running back Caden Williams. Townsend has thrown for 1,025 yards and 13-TDs. Calhoun’s defense has been steady, allowing 17.2 points per game. Keep your eye out for Kristyane Gregory on the defensive line as he has been extremely disruptive in the first half of the season.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes start the season 5-0 for the third straight year. The offense is churning out 337.8 yards per game. The Canes have used a trio of backs to get the ground game going as Khristian Lando (259 yards, 7-TDs), Richard Houston (236 yards, 1-TD) and Baylon Long (226 yards, 3-TDs) have all been major contributors to the offense. Sophomore quarterback Nate Russell has thrown for 620 yards and 6-TDs while completing 61.1% of his passes. Jamauri Brice leads all receivers with 10 receptions for 205 yards.

There will be an interesting battle going on in the trenches as Cartersville’s Luke Surrett and Malachi Toliver will battle Calhoun’s Gregory for supremacy along the line of scrimmage. Something tells us this will go down to the wire again. We believe Cartersville edges out Calhoun in a little bit of revenge. Canes by 3.

The Skinny

Lee County got back in the win column last week with a win over Lake Gibson, Florida. The Trojan’s only loss this season came at the hands of Class 7A Colquitt County. Junior running back Ousmane Kromah has rushed for 586 yards and 8-TDs to lead the ground game. Devin Collier has chipped in 282 yards on the ground and 6-TDs. Kromah also leads the team in receiving with 15 catches for 233 yards and 4-TDs. Lee County has relied heavily on the ground game as they are averaging almost 240 yards per game on the ground and 128.2 yards per game through the air. The Trojans defense is allowing 19.2 points per game. They’ve sacked opposing quarterbacks 24 times with Jaydon Cory and Leroy Jackson leading the way with six sacks a piece.

The Houston County Bears continued to light up the scoreboard last week as they scored 41 points in the victory. The Bears are averaging 50 points per game. They have done most of their damage through the air, averaging 269 yards per game through the air and 162.4 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Antwann Hill Jr. has thrown for 1,254 yards and 18-TDs while completing 74.6% of his passes. Ricky Johnson has caught 29 passes for 624 yards and 9-TDs. Fifteen different receivers have caught passes for Houston County. The Bears defense is allowing 16 points per game.

While a win by either team won’t guarantee a region title, it certainly would set the winner up nicely in perhaps the toughest region in Class 6A. Lee County’s defense should be able to slow down Houston County this week. But they won’t be able to stop them. Bears by 6.

The Skinny

The Irwin County Indians will be looking to bounce back after being upset last week by Metter. The Indians have played some of the better competition for a team in their classification. The offense is averaging 22.4 points per game while the defense is allowing 26.4. If you have read any of our previous previews, you know that the Indians will look to control there ground game with running back Shane Marshall and Jaken Thomas. However, Luke Snyder has shown more and more of his passing ability over the last few weeks while Zay Payne has emerged to a go-to receiver for the Indians.

The Swainsboro Tigers have quietly put together an impressive 5-0 start. The Tigers are averaging 31 points per game. Just about all of the offense of the Tigers has come on the ground. They are averaging just under 300 rushing yards per game and just 34 yards per game through the air. Swainsboro has only attempted 25 passes this season. Jordon Williams (434 yards, 8-TDs), Qin Brown (398 yards, 4-TDs), Demello Jones (323 yards, 2-TDs) and Bryson Carver (256 yards, 4-TDs) have been the four headed monster that has powered the ground game this season. Defensively, the Tigers are allowing 6.4 points per game. Jerrod Steward and La’Marqus Webb lead the team in total tackles with 59 and 54 respectively.

Irwin County will have to get back on track offensively, but the problem this week is that they might not get that many possession with the Swainsboro ground game. The Tigers seems to have been more consistent so far this season and we expect that to continue this week. Swainsboro by 11.

The Skinny

The North Paulding Wolfpack have started the season with five straight wins for the first time since 2018. The Wolfpack are outscoring opponents 33-15 at the midway point. North is led offensively by quarterback Tyler Niehr (1,212 yards, 10-TDs) and receiver/athlete Javarius George (14 receptions, 423 yards, 3-TDs). The Wolfpack are averaging 248.8 yards per game through the air and 189.8 yards per game on the ground. North has used a few running backs this season Calvin Scott and Jayden Clayton have shared the load this season. Aidan Maddox leads the defense with 47 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. Speaking of sacks, North has sacked opposing quarterbacks 21 times already this season.

The Walton Raiders look to be laser focus on making a deep playoff run this season. Senior quarterback Jeremy Hecklinksi has continued to rack up the passing yards as he has thrown for 905 yards and 12-TDs. Wyatt Sonderman, (18 receptions, 264 yards, 4-TDs), Cameron Loyd (17 receptions, 334 yards, 3-TDs) and tight end Hunter Teal (12 receptions 155 yards, 1-TD) have led the Raiders receiving corps. Mean while Makari Bodiford and Austin Williams have combined to rush for 584 yards and 11-TDs.  Ashton Woods leads the defense with 38 total tackles while Wendell Gregory has recorded 5 sacks. The defense is allowing just 14.2 points per game and have forced 10 turnovers.

The Raiders have yet to be tested in earnest this season, so we will certainly be interested to see if North Paulding is ready to make statement and push Walton this week. This game should be close early, but we expect Walton’s depth at the skill position to take it’s toll and wear down the Wolfpack. Walton by 16.

Eight Greats Around the State: Georgia High School Football Previews Week 7 – Part I

As we enter Week-7, Region races are beginning to tighten. This is our weekly feature where we take a look of eight of the more intriguing matchups across the state of Georgia. Here is Part II of our Eight Greats Around the State.

First up, the Grayson Rams have seemingly bounced back from their Week-1 loss and will host the Newton Rams, who have charged onto the scene this season. Is Newton ready to compete for a region title or will Grayson continue its dominance in the series? Next up, in Class 2A, the Pierce County Bears will renew their rivalry with Appling County. The winner of this game will undoubtedly have the inside track to the region crown.

In Roswell, the two prohibitive favorites for the region 7-6A title, Blessed Trinity and Roswell will face off. These rivals are literally just across the street from one another. Will Blessed Trinity defend home turf or will Roswell win the battle of Crossville Road. Finally, in Tiger there’s an intriguing non-region matchup as Rabun County hosts Fellowship Christian. The Paladins make the trip to Northeast Georgia, will their defense be able to slow down Rabun and will they be able to get the ground game going?

As always, thanks for reading. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss any of our coverage. Please feel free to comment and share.

The Skinny

The Grayson Rams have reeled off four straight victories as they enter region play this week. During that win streak, the Rams have shutout three of their four opponents. On the year they are allowing 13.6 points per game while scoring 42.4. Quarterback Jeff Davis has completed 75.2% of his passes for 1,198 yards and 16-TDs. Davis has spread the ball around to several receivers, but his top target has been John Cineas who has caught 22 passes for 336 yards and 4-TDs. Juniors Alex Sanchez and Aiden Taylor have combined to catch 45 passes for 556 yards and 7-TDs. On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Tyler Atkinson has been a pleasant surprise as he leads the team in solo tackles (35) and sacks (5). As a team, the Rams have sacked opposing quarterbacks 14 times.

The Newton Rams have opened the season with five straight wins for the first time since 1950. They are averaging 37 points per game, but it has been their defense that has made waves this season, allowing just 5.2 points per game. They have recorded two shutouts to date. On offense, the Rams are lead by junior running back Zion Johnson who has tallied 771 yards and 10-TDs, while sophomore quarterback Deron Benson has thrown for 625 yards and 9-TDs. His top receivers have been Marcus Calwise and Keon Davis who have combined for 565 yards and 7-TDs.

Newton has never defeated Grayson and to do so this week their defense is going to have to have another great performance. We believe that is possible, but not probable. Newton makes it close, but we like Grayson by 8.

The Skinny

The Pierce County Bears are off to a 5-0 start for the second consecutive season. The Bears are averaging 48.2 points per game through this streak which is slightly better than their scoring through the same period last year. They are lead by junior quarterback Caden McGatha, who has thrown for 748 yards and 11-TDs and rushed for 445 yards and 7-TDs. The Bears have done more of there damage on the ground as they are averaging over 220 yards per game on the ground and just 149.5 yards per game through the air. McGatha is joined by Marquez Leggett and freshman Jaeveon Williams. Meanwhile expect for receivers Joe Drew and Nigel Brown to have the most targets at receiver.

The Appling County Pirates have won 3 straight games leading into this week’s tilt. The Pirates were off last week and will look to make it back to back wins against their rival. This is a dangerous Pirates team that has an experienced quarterback in Dayson Griffis. He is surrounded by a couple of explosive offensive weapons including running back Jamarion “the truck” Williams, who has a unique combination of power and speed; and Camden Hickox who also has game breaking speed at wide receiver. Appling is averaging 33 points per game and allowing 11.

We know that Pierce has been lighting up the scoreboard this season and still believe they are one of the top teams in Class 2A, Appling looks to be a little more battle tested. We expect that to be the difference this week. Pirates by 6.

The Skinny

The Blessed Trinity Titans opened up region play with a big win over Sprayberry last week. Now they will face the prohibitive favorite to win the region crown. BT is averaging 24.8 points per game. Quarterback Brooks Goodman has thrown for 778 yards and 5-TDs and has not been intercepted this season. Bryce Lewis is the team’s leading receiver with 11 receptions for 156 yards and 2-TDs, however, 12 separate receivers have caught passes so far this season for the Titans. Kameron Betts leads the team in rushing yards with 223 and 2-TDs. Freshmen D.J. Jacobs continues to lead the defense in total tackles. The defense has also recorded 7 sacks on the season and is allowing 11 points per game.

The Roswell Hornets will make the short trek across Crossville Road to face their region rival and the most serious threat to another region crown. The Hornets recorded their second shutout of the season as they blanked Johns Creek last week. Save for their game against Milton, Roswell’s offense has been prolific, averaging 46.6 points per game behind the leadership of senior quarterback K.J. Smith. Smith has thrown for 921 yards and 15-TDs while completing 68.8% of his passes. Senior Nykahi Davenport has rushed for 482 yards and 8-TDs to lead the ground game. He’s been boosted by the blocking of senior lineman Anthonie Knapp and company. Defensively, Roswell is allowing 11 points per game.

As we eluded to early, this game should determine the top two seeds in the region after all of the dust settles. Blessed Trinity will have to find a way to sustain drives and keep Smith and Davenport on the sidelines. Easier said than done. We like Roswell by 10.

The Skinny

The Rabun County Wildcats have won three straight games entering this week’s contest and have seemed to shaken off a loss to Class 3A Stephens County. Quarterback Ty Truelove has now surpassed the 1,000 yard mark passing with 12-TDs on the season. Top receiving targets include Willie Goodwin (21 receptions, 557 yards, 8-TDs) and Paul Picciotti (15 receptions, 205 yards, 1-TD). Reid Giles and Noah English have combined to rush for 587 yards and 7-TDs. English also leads the defense in total tackles with 52 while junior linebacker Elvis Hunt has recorded 48 total tackles.

The Fellowship Christian Paladins are wrapping up their non-region slate of games this week and are looking to run their win streak to three games. On the season, the Paladins area averaging 38.2 points per game while allowing 16.2. The bulk of their offensive production has come on the legs of sophomore running back C.J. Givers, who has rushed for 588 yards and 9-TDs. Givers will run behind a line anchored by highly toughed prospect Joshua Petty.

Despite Rabun’s propensity to put up big numbers, we expect that the Fellowship Christian defense will answer the bell. We beleive the score will be in the 20s, but we do like Rabun by 4.
