Week-8 is in the books and once again we were treated to some great action across the state of Georgia. As with most weeks this season, there were some big surprises, but perhaps none bigger than in Class 5A as Calhoun, who is one week removed from knocking off Cartersville, themselves fell victim to upset minded Hiram. Here is a look at our take on the Top-10 teams in each classification.
In Class 7A, one of the biggest surprises was not that North Cobb beat Walton, but how they did. The loss drops Walton all the way to No. 9 while North Cobb is up to No. 8 this week. Lambert makes their debut in the rankings at No. 10 this week as they are undefeated through six games this season.
Over in Class 6A, the Top-7 teams remain unchanged. Previous No. 8 Northside (Warner Robins) fell to Houston County, dropping Northside from the rankings. That loss made room for South Paulding, who is back in the Top-10 this week at No. 10.
We’ve already mention the big upset in Class 5A, the loss by Calhoun drops the Yellow Jackets to No. 8 this week. This could be the most wide open classification in the state as we believe there are 7 or 8 teams that could claim the state title this season.
Meanwhile, in Class 4A, the Top-5 remained unchanged. Burke County drops from the rankings after their loss to Benedictine. That made room for the Stephenson Jaguars who make their debut in our Top-10 this week. Trinity Christian got a big win over region foe Whitewater which moves the Lions up two spots to No. 8.
Like the other classifications, Class 3-A saw the shuffling amongst the bottom half of the rankings. Hebron Christian lost to Monroe-Area by 34; that loss drops Hebron out of the Top-10. That made room for Thomasville who makes their debut in the rankings this week. Thomasville is in at No. 10.
We have a new No. 1 team in Class 2A. The South Atlanta Hornets are atop the poll for the first time this season. Previous No. 1 Pierce County lost on Monday to South Georgia rival Appling County dropping them to No. 4. There were no other changes in Class 2A.
There were some interesting results in Class A Division I. The Top-6 was unchanged, however there was shake up at the bottom as Dublin upset Bleckley County. The win by the Irish has them ranked for the first time this season. While Dublin is in at No. 8, the Commerce Tigers also scored a big win over Social Circle. That victory propelled the Tigers into the ranking at No. 9. We mentioned Bleckley County’s loss to Dublin. That drops them to No. 10 this week.
Finally down in Class A Division II, previously ranked No. 5 Washington-Wilkes fell to unranked Lincoln County. That loss drops the Tigers from the rankings this week. That loss made room for the Manchester Blue Devils who come in at No. 10.
