GAC Spartans Football Preview

The Skinny

The Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans advanced to the semi-finals last season before falling to Peach County. However, there seems to be plenty to be excited about as the Spartans return brothers Chris and Myles Hinton both first team All-State offensive linemen. But Coach Hardy is certainly not penciling his team into the state tournament.

“Every year is a challenge to put together the puzzles pieces of a great team,” Hardy said.

Outside of the Hinton brothers, the Spartans welcome back First-Team All Region tight-end Jeffrey Blake.  Wide receiver Jake Floyd will look to lead the receiving corp. Floyd was third on the team in receiving yards last season. Ty James is projected to join Floyd at receiver.

Quarterback Josh Rose will be back for his senior season. Rose threw 17 TDs and only two interceptions. Rose will not have the luxury of RB Kyler McMichael. Junior running back Montae Bailey looks to be the heir apparent at running back.

Bailey rushed for 602 yards and 7 TDs last season. Fellow junior Tyler Bride will also be called upon to fill the void at running back.

The Spartans will trot out a very imposing defensive front. They are anchored by defensive linemen Chris Hinton, (First Team All-State) and Elijah Pryor, (First Team All-Region). Linebackers Jeffrey Blake, (First Team All-Region) and Choe Bryant-Strother are also names to be familiar with on defense.

The Spartans will certainly log some travel miles this season.

“We are traveling to Dallas, Texas for a game vs Prestonwood Christian,” Hardy said.

This game is the first of two challenging road games for the Spartans, as they return to Georgia the following and travel to Thomson. These early season tests should prove valuable down the stretch and in postseason play.

Brookwood alum and current head coach, Philip Jones joins us for episode 5 of the “Conversations with Coaches segment”. The Broncos made an impressive run into the state semi-finals before falling to Colquitt County last season. While expectations are generally high at Brookwood, Coach Jones explains that replacing a class of experienced players will present a new set of challenges.

The 2018 Broncos will be inexperienced, but they are talented. Tune in as Coach Jones talks about the upcoming season and explains the meaning of F.A.M.I.L.Y. at Brookwood. Don’t forget to check out Texas Road House or Little Mexico if you’re in the area for a pregame meal!

Conversations with Coaches – Episode 4 – James Teter – Sequoyah Chiefs

We stay local to Cherokee County today and spend a few minutes with Sequoyah Chief head coach James Teter. Coach Teter is in his 10th season at Sequoyah and has guided the Chiefs into post season play for 5 out of the past 6 seasons.

Coach Teter talks about some of the challenges his team will face and he will give us an update on the new field turf being installed at Skip Pope Stadium. Tune in to hear to learn a little bit about Coach Teter and to learn about some of the young men who will suit up for the Chiefs on Friday nights this fall.

The Chiefs will certainly be looking to break into the top three in the region. A position that Dalton, Allatoona and Harrison have had a stranglehold on over the last few season. The Chiefs certainly have the potential to make that break through, but it certainly won’t be easy.

Conversations with Coaches – Episode 3 – Tanner Glisson – Troup County Tigers

Head Coach Tanner Glisson joins us today from LaGrange, Georgia. Coach Glisson has turned the Troup program around in his three seasons, but this season presents some new challenges for the Tigers. Tune in to get Coach Glisson’s take on the 2018 season.

This definitely is a team on the rise in region 5-4A. They’ll have to get past a tough region schedule that includes perennial power, Cartersville. The Tigers return enough players on both sides of the ball tho really make things interesting.

Conversations with Coaches – Episode 2 – Damien Postell – Grovetown Warriors

Last year, the Grovetown Warriors advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs before eventually losing to state champion, Lee County. Coach Damien Postell looks to have the Warriors ready to challenge for a region title.

The Warriors will need to replace offensive standouts such as D’Angelo Durham and Braxton Wharton from last year’s team, but Coach Postell believes that he has some players that are ready to step up for Grovetown.

Grovetown is certainly a team to watch in the CSRA (Central Savannah River Region). This might very well be a sleeper team out of region 3-6A. We certainly don’t believe that they will be a sleeper for long.

TFR – GHSA Class A-Public Finals Preview

Clinch County and Irwin County will face off for the 43rd time on Saturday morning. This  meeting will be for the state title. Clinch County won the state title in 2015 and has won 6 titles overall. Irwin County has been in the state title game seven times but has won only once, when they went undefeated in 1975.

Irwin County bested Clinch 21-7 earlier this season. If the Indians are to win again, they will need a solid performance from QB Will Stephens and RB DJ Lundy.

For Clinch County, it’s not just a matter of slowing down Lundy and Stephens, as Irwin has several playmakers on offense. Clinch has a playmaker of their own in QB Charles McClelland. Look for him to match the performance of Will Stephens this week.

We expect a closer game than the last time, but does the result change…

As always, thanks for reading. Please feel free to comment and share.
